Knight Hall School

Review: On April 11, 2013, my child was placed in time out / secluded at Knight Hall for 10 minutes. My child was upset about a flower offered by another child earlier that morning at elementary school, which was declined, then later wanted by my child. The entire story was told to [redacted] (employee of Knight Hall) when she picked my child up off of the bus, however [redacted] says she didn't understand the bus monitor because the bus monitor had an accent. I would want to believe that understanding my child, and helping my child process new feelings and emotions would be important enough for [redacted] to ask the monitor to repeat the story, but [redacted] did not. I spoke to [redacted] regarding the seclusion, she said it would have been ok if my child was there for 30 minutes, which is both alarming and concerning. Timeouts are not to last longer than a child's age my child is 3. I wrote an email that night to [redacted] (director of Knight Hall) regarding my concerns and told her to make sure her staff understood that under no circumstance would my child ever be placed in timeout/ the thinking spot again. Part of my agreeing to timeout/ the thinking spot was that the staff would document it in the communication book (which is was not) and that it would not be longer than 3 minutes (it was 10). Friday morning at 7:35 when we arrived, [redacted] told me that she did not feel Knight Hall was a "good fit" for my child, and that today (Friday, April 12th), would be my child's last day. Because of what happened the day prior, the abrupt and careless decision to end our contract, I decided it was not in the best interest of my child to stay at Knight Hall that day.I am a single mother, I work full time and attend school full time, no consideration or notice was given by [redacted]. Knight Hall requires a 3 week notice, she did not even give me one day.

The contract is signed from September to the end of August. No notice was given when the contract was broken. A refund should be given to offset the amount of money paid to Knight Hall and for last minute child care arrangements.

Thank you for bringing this complaint to our attention. Knight Hall School has carefully reviewed the complaint and has the following response:

An additional complaint regarding this matter had been filed with The State of Connecticut Department of Public Health (DPH), the regulatory agency covering Knight Hall School. DPH conducted a full investigation of the matter and found the claim that Ms. [redacted]'s child was placed in time out for 10 minutes to be unsubstantiated.

The termination of care was done without notice. Because Ms. [redacted] had not submitted tuition payment for the first two weeks of April (while her child had been receiving care), no refund was or will be offered.

I also wanted to mention that she received monthly payments from Care for Kids, which covered the first two weeks. But even so, she has always received monthly payment, which was our agreement. Is there an email address that I can submit proof of payment history and letters of award amount from Care for Kids?

I have always submitted monthly checks to Knight hall, and will be happy to furnish proof of such records. Care was terminated because of me questioning the time out.
