in the account, whereas, a credit card is a promise to pay, so they work differently at a pay-at-the-pump point of sale (POS) terminal One example would be that the debit card is approved for a fuel purchase Great This would be the end of the story if this were a credit card But being a debit card, should the customer go down the street and purchase a meal and that charge gets to the customers bank before my fuel charge, and my fuel charge overdrafts the account, I am out the money, as if an insufficient check was just written to me This is the exact same method car rental companies and hotels use to guarantee payment when a debit card is used for payment I have seen this same system used at many pay-at-the-pump systems in Colorado and throughout many surrounding states.We have posted a sign at every fuel pump that if you are using a debit card, to please come inside to customer service to pay for your transaction to avoid a temporary hold on your account I am sorry you did not see the sign and had the temporary hold placed on your accountThese holds typically last anywhere from 24-hours, and depends entirely on how the customers bank processes transactions If they looked online to their account, the customer should have seen the word "Pending" next to the transaction The pending transaction drops off when the actual charge appears We have found that occasionally a credit card that allows for cash back at POS terminals are coded to work the same as a debit card This card is totally dependent on how the customers bank codes their card and not on our POS terminal.I would be happy to discuss this further with the customer if they have any additional questions
