Kspeed Automotive Reviews (1)

DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. INCOMPETENT MECHANICS.My [redacted] Outback XT 2005 broke down in [redacted], late December 2013. I had it towed to Kspeed Automotive because of its reputation. They had the car for over a month. The work done was an engine rebuild and I was originally told a time of around 2 weeks for work to be complete. I traveled from my residence in ** to pick it up a month later, only to find out it was not ready. And wouldn't be ready for another week. At its completion a week later,I arrived at the shop to find it with an active leak(fixed whilst I was there,or so I thought),missing bolts,(one of which I found myself, after the discovery of the first missing bolt) per owners admission, broken parts (which were replaced) from aggressive staff member, and NO a test drive performed!I was very wary of driving my car with all the above issues, but owner told me it was fine to drive and they are the experts. The car had some power issues, turbo flutter, but assumed it was just how the car would run now. Approximately 150 miles of driving from leaving Kspeed Automotive within a few miles of my place of work,my car started having major power issues, wouldn't go over 30 miles an hr.I got in contact with the owner, and he denies any responsibility and refuses to pick up my car to fix the issue claiming it was my fault that I drove it with a leak. At no point did he advise to come in to get it looked at before going on with my trip.I got a second opinion from a reputable mechanic, and his analysis was a hose wasn't connected properly on the engine rebuild.Causing a blow head gasket.Owner contacted again and advised of incompetent work done, causing engine failure again.Owner still refuses to honor his incompetent work and fix the issue. I paid 4500 dollars for a failed engine rebuild. The product I thought I was buying was a compete engine rebuild and a completely functioning car. Neither was the case. DO NOT GET MECHANICAL WORK DONE HERE. INCOMPETENT. 3rd party mechanics agree.Product_Or_Service: Engine RebuildDesired SettlementI would like my money back or my car fixed. Upon further discussion with Owner, he does not want to fix his incomplete engine rebuild. So I would like a refund. Business Response [redacted]'s account of events is largely correct, though incomplete. The engine rebuild was completed on February 6th, 2014 and delivered to [redacted] at around 7:30 PM that Thursday evening. As [redacted] was pressed for time, he could not wait for an extensive test drive. I drove the vehicle approximately 1.5 miles and everything appeared to be in order. [redacted] was advised to be diligent upon taking delivery of the car and attentive to any vibrations, noises, smells or leaks which may crop up because of small issues. These issues would be covered as warrantable if any were to arise, provided they were brought to our attention promptly.Early the following morning, Friday, February 7th, I received the following email from [redacted] at 9:29 AM:"Good morning [redacted] Car seems to be running ok. Turbo has moments of what feels like skipping and shuddering, mostly around 3-4 thousand revs. And it looks as though the coolant is still leaking. I will be down this afternoon to have these two things looked at and fixed. I am very disappointed that the car continues to have issues after all the work and time put in. And also the that it had numerous things missing upon my arrival, bolts etc.I really don't have time today to come down but will make it work as I want the car to be at least as good as before the hose broke. I will advise when I am on the way. [redacted]. "Included was an attachment of a photograph of what appeared to be evidence of a minor coolant leak.My reply was as follows at 10:35 AM:"Hi [redacted], I am very sorry you won't be able to head straight home at this point. We will have an open bay ready to take care of this issue when you get here.[redacted]Unfortunately, [redacted] did not follow through with the return visit to our shop to have the issue corrected while it was still merely an inconvenience to all parties involved. Instead, against explicit statements from me when he took delivery of the vehicle, he drove it to his workplace in [redacted] without having the issue checked. During the course of this drive of approximately 150 miles, the car lost all of its coolant and overheated, damaging the engine. This damage would not have occurred had the car been brought back to us to have the minor leak located and repaired. [redacted]'s actions directly caused a very minor mistake to result in severe head gasket failure on his vehicle. The third party mechanic which [redacted] chose to take his car to be evaluated by was [redacted] at [redacted] in [redacted]. [redacted] and I have been acquainted for nearly ten years, having many mutual friends in the automotive enthusiast communities of the region. When I spoke to him on the phone, he indicated that the car had lost all coolant and likely had suffered head gasket failure. He found no possible cause for this other than a single loose hose clamp on the coolant reservoir. He did not indicate that he found any other faults or issues with [redacted]'s car which would have led to damage. [redacted] concurred that no significant damage was likely to have resulted to the engine had it been brought back to us as [redacted] was instructed.[redacted] claims that he was not advised to return the car when a possible fault was apparent. This is clearly contradicted by the email he sent to us on Friday morning after taking delivery of the car, and by the reply he received in which is was made clear we expected to see the car back at our shop. To reiterate, it was made explicitly clear that KSpeed Automotive would provide a limited warranty for the repairs performed. KSpeed was responsible for the proper repair and installation of the engine. [redacted] was, upon taking delivery, responsible for reporting any and all possible issues that may occur with the car and for returning the car to us to correct them. [redacted], for reasons he has not provided, chose not to return to the shop to correct one such minor problem, and that decision resulted in significant damage to his car. KSpeed Automotive is not liable for the results of [redacted]'s actions.I am genuinely sympathetic to [redacted] for this situation. Few of us are able to budget for a large, unexpected repair bill. [redacted] likely did nothing wrong nor failed to perform any preventative maintenance which led to the initial oil loss and catastrophic engine failure which led to the repairs in question, and his frustration with this entire sequence of events is understandable. However, the current state of [redacted]'s vehicle was completely avoidable had he followed detailed instructions to provide KSpeed Automotive with the opportunity to avoid small issues becoming major ones. Had [redacted] chosen to return to the shop as instructed- and as he had stated his intent to- the issues with [redacted]'s car would have been avoided completely. [redacted]'s demands for free transportation and repair of his vehicle and/or a refund of his repair costs are not valid due to his knowingly acting against the instructions given to him upon delivery of the vehicle. Expensive repairs are extremely frustrating for nearly all car owners, as we have noted. Again, we are sympathetic to [redacted] for extreme inconvenience to him due to these events. This anger and frustration, however, does not entitle [redacted] to place responsibility for his actions onto other parties.Consumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)KSpeed Automotive's additions to the account of events has some inconsistencies with my recollection of the events. First, I would like to further explain the events leading up to my picking up my car from KSpeed Automotive on February 6th. On January 29th I received the following email from [redacted]Still looks good to be done sometime towards the end of the day tomorrow. I'm going to make as much progress as I can on it tonight, and I expect to be able to fire it up in time for you to get back home and get some sleep.[redacted]I arrived in Reno by bus on January 30th around lunch time and waited downtown to hear from KSpeed for a pick up time. At 3PM I received a phone call from [redacted]stating the car would not be ready that day. I was forced to rent a vehicle in order to drive to my workplace in [redacted], ** that night, which KSpeed paid for. [redacted]assured he would call the next day with an update on my vehicle. On February 5th I had not heard anything from KSpeed and sent an email requesting an update on my vehicle as the delay was causing numerous work related issues for me. At that point, [redacted]called me and assured me the car would be ready the following day. I arrived at KSpeed on February 6th via taxi after dropping off the rental car, expecting to have my vehicle fully functioning and ready to transport me to [redacted], **, my workplace, the next day. Despite the fact that KSpeed Automotive had the car for an additional full week after I was initially told it would be ready, I arrived to find the car was still be worked on. It was outside running, smelling of a burning substance, missing bolts, had an active leak and had not been taken for a test drive. KSpeed wrote that I was under time pressure and refused a test drive by the mechanic. I refute this claim. I was under no time pressure on February 6th and would happily have stayed as long as needed to ensure the car was properly functioning so as to avoid any future complications. I had nowhere else I needed to be until the following day. KSpeed also stated that the mechanic took the car for a 1.5 mile test drive, I refute this claim, as well. He stated upon at time of payment that "it should be ok, I haven't had time to test drive it yet, but it should be ok" further damaging my already waning confidence in the Kspeeds mechanical ability. Per his own admission, no test drive was performed on my vehicle. In addition, I refute the claim that the mechanic gave me proper return instructions to bring the car back if any issues were noted. In my recollection the mechanic himself was pressed for time and handed me a generic warranty pamphlet along with an invoice. I signed no warranty agreement. The following day, as stated in my email to the mechanic, the car seemed to running OK. I did notice some skipping and shuddering at high speeds over at approximately 3-4thousand revs and some liquid under the car I worried could be coolant. Having no expertise in the matter of car maintenance, I was worried and hoped to bring the car the 50 miles back to Reno to KSpeed Automotive for additional work. Unfortunately, due to severe winter weather and road closures, I was determined that it would be impossible to drive the car to Reno, rent another vehicle and drive the 185 miles from KSpeed to my workplace in [redacted], **. As I stated in my email, the car seemed to running OK. I did not want to further jeopardize my job and decided that due to the winter weather I needed to drive straight to work rather than the large and dangerous detour to KSpeed, which would have made it impossible to get to work on time and might have cost me my job. I also did not think anything serious was wrong with my car given that I had just picked it up, it was running fine at speeds less than 70mph and that [redacted]had not made it explicitly clear that he had not done proper work on the vehicle and, as it seems to me, expected issues to pop up, given that he had a bay open and ready for me on my expected arrival. Lastly, I dispute the mechanic's claim that I failed to follow detailed instructions as to when to return the vehicle to KSpeed. No such detailed instructions were given. Only a few offhand sentences of casual reassurances to call him if any issues arrive were given as I drove out of KSpeed on February 6th. Thus, the basis of KSpeed's automotive's claims are not valid: no detailed instructions were provided as to when to return the car, no instructions were given not to drive the vehicle, no instructions to come to KSpeed right away were given nor was any anticipatory guidance as to the potential for extensive damage given by KSpeed. As a layperson who is simply a consumer, I am at the mercy of the expertise of certified auto mechanics. KSpeed's place of the blame on me for not returning the car is unjust. It is in my opinion that KSpeed Automotive knowingly provided me with a vehicle that had not been properly assessed for functioning and then failed to provide me with proper return precautions. That said, I am willing to come to a compromise with KSpeed so as to resolve this issue. I will pay to have the vehicle transported from the third party mechanic to KSpeed Automotive, and I am happy to consider paying for the parts needed to fix the vehicle so long as the work to fix the vehicle is provided free of charge. Final Business Response [redacted] and I came to an agreement for resolution, and in fact I now have his car back at the shop to perform the needed repairs. This was not yet reported to you, but my understanding is that once we have completed repairs per our agreement with [redacted] the complaint will be considered resolved. Please advise if I have the situation wrong.[redacted]Consumer Response My apologies, I did not realize there was another email for me to reply to in order to prevent this case from closing, as the agreed upon services had not yet been rendered. I picked up my car from Kspeed Auto on 6/23, [redacted] the owner had advised me that the car was not functioning at 100 percent and thought it was an issue with the transmission. I paid him in full for the parts which we had agreed upon and promptly had the car examined by [redacted] transmission experts. They took a thorough look at the transmission and deemed it in sound mechanical order. They advised the issue is likely with the engine, stemming from a likely timing issue secondary to a poor rebuild. I am requesting a refund for parts paid for on 6/23 ($843.98) and all previous payments made to Kspeed Auto due to the car being in the same condition it was prior to any work being done by Kspeed Auto.
