This is my understanding of the incident that our customer has filed a complaint about...# 1 it seems odd that he can name my business, but I can't name him......however I will abide by your instructionsThe ID # for this complaint is [redacted] . I, Carol K***, as the owner, was... told that someone wanted a call back from me about his step-son's mirror, by my facility manager on Feb 26, 2016. I was not at Kuhnsville Car Wash when the incident happened. Kyle P [redacted] , my facility manager on that Friday, told me that after looking at the vehicle, he observed scratch marks on the underside of the mirror in question. He told the driver of the vehicle about the marks, which Kyle felt were caused by some unusual; pressure to the mirror and that caused the scratch marks on the underside. Mirrors are made to move in and out to accommodate tight spaces and some people prefer to fold them in at car washes, parking garages and mall parking spaces. The mirror cases are not designed to move up and down. In seeing the pressure scratches on the underside of the mirror, Kyle saw that there had to have been some type of previous damage done to that mirror. We have signage that says we are not responsible for any previously damaged parts. We do our best in keeping our equipment in good shape. We have two maintenance people on staff. They are continually monitoring our equipment. I have not seen a car wash in the area that does as much checking and maintaining as we do. When looking at a problem, we always try to figure out "how could our equipment have caused this"? We washed over 400 cars that day and didn't have any incidents before or after this car. I took over the car wash in Oct of 2015. because of my son' health problems. As of my involvement here in Oct. we have not taken any other mirror off. I am sure that the [redacted] report did not report the scratches on the underside of the mirror. I know according to the driver of the vehicle that this was a purchase of a used vehicle. No one knows what the car was through. Did the mirror get damaged moving in or out of a garage? Did someone's door swing open on a parking lot and catch the underside of the vehicle? But there was obvious pressure at one time on the underside of that mirror. Something hit it with enough force to cause scratches in the plastic and possible internal damage as well. After my first conversation with the step-father, I asked him to have it checked by his garage. He called back and gave me a price to have the mirror replaced. I said that I would like to see the vehicle, since I was asked to pay for a new mirror. The step-father was going to out of town and we arranged for me to look at the vehicle on Sunday the 13th of March. The step-son came with the vehicle and Kyle and I looked at the vehicle and I agreed with Kyle that it looked like there was previous damage. I told the step-son that I would contact his step-father. I did call the step-father and told him that I agreed with my facility manager that there were signs of previous damage. He did not accept my explanation and said the car wash was responsible and should pay for it. In my first conversation with the step-father he asked me "Do you know who I am? I bring 3 to 5 cars through your wash for twenty years." He named some expensive cars. I did tell him in my last conversation that I would want to give the same service and courtesy to the waitress with one old car. He wasn't happy with my statement. He then said was I going to pay for the mirror or not? I told him in light of the fact that he was a good, longstanding customer that I would write him a check for $200.00 for goodwill. He said he didn't want it. He said he would contact his lawyer. I cordially said Ok, thank you and goodbye. My staff at the car wash, who were involved in this incident, told me I didn't owe anything for this vehicle, because of prior damage and our warnings about vehicles in this condition. I said I knew that and I wanted to make the offer of Goodwill to the step-father and I knew how it might be perceived. I still wanted to do it because he was a long time customer. I still believe I did the right thing in an attempt at goodwill. Please feel free to call me with any questions, Sincerely, Carol J. K***, owner, Kuhnsville Car Wash
