Kumon Learning Center of Modesto - East Reviews (5)

Mr [redacted] and his daughter came to my math & reading center together to get her tested for the Kumon math program.  I have provided his daughter with a free placement test followed by an hour long parent orientation all free of charge.  I realize Mr [redacted] had some language barrier;...

therefore, I've asked his daughter who is fluent in both English and in his language to translate for him while he sat with us.  I took extra time (normally, the orientations last no more than 30 min) to make sure he understood the program and to answer any questions he may have.I had thoroughly explained to him that we do not start the materials at the student's current grade level but begin at the level where he/she tested on the placement test given.  I made it clear that most students do not begin the program at their current grade level (which was his daughter's case, as she tested way below her current grade level).I've also explained it will take time and practice for his daughter to work through the rough patches and work up to her grade level and once she reaches that goal, she can work above her grade level.  This is the core of the program. His daughter understood clearly and so did Mr [redacted].  He then filled out our application, signed, and acknowledged the level she will begin on.  He was also notified that we never work out of school textbooks/homework since we have our own curriculum. He paid $50 for one-time registration fee and $110 for a one month tuition.  He was informed of these costs during the orientation. His daughter registered, took the Kumon work, and proceeded with the program for a week.  Then, after a week, Mr [redacted] came back to tell me he wants a refund because his daughter is not doing the same work she is doing at school.  I've explained to him that all this was discussed during the orientation and that I cannot un-register her at that point and no refunds can be given.  Mr [redacted] then demanded in a loud voice that he wants a refund but I had to stick to my rules. This complaint does not make any sense since I had spent almost two hours testing his daughter and explaining the program to both of them.  I know it's not a language barrier since his daughter is fluent in both languages (English and their native language) and I had spent extra time so that she can thoroughly explain it to him prior to signing the application.Mr [redacted] was just not happy and maybe frustrated since his daughter is so behind in her math skills.  He expected a miracle to happen but there are no miracles in learning and mastering a skill.  It takes time, effort, and practice!!!I believe Mr [redacted] does not have any legitimate complaint against my business since I have proceeded by the rules and the regulations of the Kumon franchise.Thank you,[redacted]

Yes, I believe I had confused Mr [redacted] with another parent whom I had conducted an orientation with that same evening.  It was late in the evening after work so I apologize for not remembering every detail.  However, I do remember giving out the parents guide and also remember Mr [redacted]'s daughter coming back on another day to register for the program.  The Kumon parents guide which Mr [redacted] (and all parents interested in Kumon) had been given has detailed information about how the program works, how the placement testing is done, and how a student must start the program at the level he/she tested into, rather than the grade level he/she is currently in at school.  All of these information was also shared with Mr [redacted] during the parent orientation I had conducted for his daughter. I do not understand this complaint since Mr [redacted] was given all the information and he was not in any way or form pressured to sign up for the program.  I highly encourage all the parents to take the information home, think about it and discuss it as a family before enrolling, which is the case here as well.  Mr [redacted] himself admitted to that in his message!I am sorry his daughter tested far below her current grade level at school but this is how the program works.  We start where they've "mastered" and we slowly work them up to their current grade level and beyond.  There is no miracle fix when it comes to learning.  I cannot do magic and make his daughter a master of 9th grade math after two sessions.  Learning (in anything) takes time and effort.  There is no miracle or a quick-fix when it comes to learning.  No one wants to do worksheets  (especially a high school student) far below their grade level as it can feel "degrading"  but I cannot change her test,  I cannot let her skip levels just to please the parents because that is not how this program works.  It would be doing  injustice to the student and going against everything  the Kumon program stands for. We're not ruthless,  money hungry business out to rip off parents.  We offer partial tuition exemption to families who cannot afford the full cost and I myself give out other discounts to many parents who are financially struggling, all at my cost.  Money is not why I run a math & reading center.   Regarding the refund,  Kumon franchise does not have a refund or no refund policy because the company leaves it up to each individual center to decide that aspect.  Mr [redacted] was given all the information, time, and freedom to register or not register.  his choice to register was exactly that,...his choice, his decision. Regarding the registration fee, the  free registration promotion is offered at some months throughout the year from the franchise as a way to increase enrollment during certain months but it is not required of any Kumon centers and is solely  voluntary.  I do not always participate in those promotions since I do not feel the need o advertise or increase enrollment, I am just baffled a parent would waste time and energy taking action such as this rather than focusi on the real issue and work towards resolving it.  One cannot blame anyone else for his/her own child not thriving to their expectations. Thank you,[redacted]

The information given by [redacted] is inaccurate and false.I started school in California from nursery school all the way to college; I am very fluent in English (reading, writing, and speaking). English is our primary language at home and neither of our kids speak my native tongue.  So there is NO language barrier, and No translation by my daughter.  For a business owner teaching other kids, I am totally surprised at [redacted]’s un-true statements.I took both my kids (son and daughter) to Kumon that day and they BOTH did the placement test. (The test and orientation are free). After the testing we waited in the waiting room area to speak with [redacted], there was another family waiting for the orientation following us and [redacted] asked me if it would be okay to speak with them first. I told her it would be okay with me (which I later regretted), because we waited for over 45 minutes until we were able to speak with her, but she did apologize for the long wait.[redacted] went over the placement tests for both my kids individually (there was 3 of us present, not just my daughter and I), she gave me the application and told me to take it home, talk it over with my wife and make a family decision. So the application was not filled out there nor any payments made the same time.   (Please look at the date of the application and date of the payment receipt; Kumon is not open on Saturdays so how could I have signed it there). There was NO 2 hours spent explaining the program to my daughter and translated to me, when my son was there as well.I went back the following week with the application filled out and a check for the $160.00 to enroll my daughter only.  After  the 2nd session,  my wife and I were unhappy with the work that our daughter was getting, instead of close to her grade level  (9th grade)  work, she was getting basic addition and subtraction work. (not even middle school level work).  My daughter did not want to continue Kumonanymore because it wasn’t helping her with high school math, so on the third session my WIFE with my daughter (NOT ME) went to talk to [redacted] about un-enrolling our daughter from Kumon, and [redacted] told my wife that there were no refunds, so my WIFE and daughter left there and none of us have gone back since. (There was no shouting, screaming or loud voices as [redacted] stated).  So that is false about me going and shouting at her when I wasn’t even present.I feel that she is either confusing me with a different person or avoiding from refunding my money by falsely accusing me of not understanding English therefore not understanding the program or her.  I have no problems of anyone from the Revdex.com contacting me in person so they can see I am fluent in English. On another note, her website was advertising waiving of the enrollment fee for when we enrolled our daughter, but we were not aware of it until after when I decided to look at her Kumon website. She did not offer nor mention it either. The application form does not say anything about the fee being non refundable.   [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] [redacted] [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because:I am still requesting a refund of my payment of $160.00.  [redacted] is avoiding refunding my money to me at this point.  I am pursuing other avenues to get my refund from her.

Review: We put our daughter in Kumon to help with her high school 10th grade math. She was put in a 5th grade math level simple addition and subraction. When I asked the owner [redacted] about why she was put at such a lower level when our daughter needs help with high school math. [redacted] said that she always starts the kids at a lower level. We were unsatisfied with the work and requested a refund after only 2 classes, and [redacted] said that she does not give refunds. I have read the contract and there is no where in the contract that states anything about no refunds.Desired Settlement: I would like my full refund of $160.00
