Review: My daughter is enrolled in the Kumon of Chelsea for math tutoring. The center is located at 320 West 23rd Street and is a subsidiary branch of Kumon North America. The cost is $150 per month per course. Initially, I gave permission to Kumon of Chelsea to make automatic debits monthly in the amount of $150. On August 1, 2013, the center made three (3) simultaneous debits from my account for $150 each. On August 7, I withdrew my permission for the center to make any more automatic debits from my account. I advised them that I would be paying by check moving forward. I made a payment by check on September 3, 2013. When I checked my bank statement on September 26, 2013, I saw that Kumon had made two, simultaneous automatic debits from my bank account in the amount of $150 totalling $300.00. I have made several calls and emails to the Kumon of Chelsea center as well as to Kumon of North America requesting the immediate refund of my $300. The Kumon of Chelsea center director left me a voicemail requesting the bank statement, which I promptly provide - twice.Desired Settlement: I want:

1. My $300 dollars returned to my bank account;

2. Permanent removal of my credit card information from the automatic debit system used by Kumon of Chelsea; and

3. One month of free of Math tutoring for my daughter for this terrible inconvenience.

Review: We enrolled our 3.5 yr old son and 7.5 yr old daughter in Kumon Center of [redacted] for math and reading. My kids are already doing well in their respective Montessori daycare and elementary school. My daughter goes to an advanced elementary school which requires testing and scoring 99% in math and reading to secure a seat. My husband and I first generation immigrants from India. I have masters in computer science and my husband has a MBA from India and a masters in Finance. Quitting is not an option for us and that is what we are teaching our kids.

Our objective with Kumon was to enhance their skills. This center requires a year’s contract minimum. Now 6 months down the line, our kids hate the program. We now feel that this program is not working out for our kids. Our question to you is - does KUMON enforce a year's contract? If so, why ALL centers are not operate the same way? How can the contract length vary for each center if KUMON requires certain duration for success? If KUMON does not require the kind of contract then why are the centers taking parents for a ride with such rigid rules. This center does not offer any flexibility on early termination. They want us to get a doctor’s note which says that kids are excused from KUMON which is ridiculous. The center director is saying that KUMON is a long term commitment. Our question then is can the KUMON program guarantee that if a kid stays with the program for a year, he or she will start liking the learning again? Is KUMON able to measure that desire to learn quantitatively?

Kumon should direct the centers to have some kind of early termination policy in place. They simply destroying the brand name but putting such rigid business rules. In any other situation probably contract takes the lead but we are talking about kids and their future.

Please help us.[redacted]Desired Settlement: Refund the money and put some reasonable early termination clause in every contract. Make sure the center director tells that to each parents when they are luring them in.
