patient is going through the healing process. When teeth are extracted and a denture is placed immediately following the extractions, a patient needs return visits every 3 – 4 weeks for adjustments and temporary liners. As the tissue heals from the extractions, the tissue shrinks and changes. As the tissue shrinks and changes, the fit of the denture changes causing it to be lose, rub sore spots, and causes difficulty when talking and chewing. After healing, which for most people is between 6 – 8 months, we recommend a new denture or a reline. We know that most likely the denture that is placed immediately following extractions will not fit after the healing process. A reline refits the inside of the denture to accommodate for the shrinkage and changes from the healing process.
The patient needs to return for adjustments and temporary liners every 3 – 4 weeks, until she is ready to proceed with a permanent reline or a new denture. There are no fees involved for the adjustments and temporary liners for 1 year following the placement of the denture. Everything that the patient is experiencing is completely normal, and dentures are custom made prosthetics and are non-refundable. We want nothing more than the patient to be a successful denture wearer and look forward to the opportunity to address her needs.
