They took possession of the boat on June 12th, 2014. The first time that we were called and told about a problem with the boat starting was July 1st. Since the boat was docked close to my house, I went by there the same day to see if it was something simple that could be taken care of quickly. At this time I found that when you turned the ignition switch, nothing happened. So fuses and wire connections were checked, but I could not find the problem. On July 2nd, the very next day, I took my head mechanic with me so we could run some tests to see if we could find the problem. After re-checking things, we determined that no electrical power was getting to the engine. We then found that a wire in the engine harness had shorted out and melted some other wires together.
The damage was minimal and could be fixed, but to be on the safe side, the boat needed to come out of the water so the harness could be replaced. The customer was immediately informed about the problem and told not to run the engine because more damage could be done, and also because it was not safe to do so. There was no misunderstanding about what I had told them about not running the engine since his wife had called me soon after at the shop, and asked if we could rent them a pontoon boat for that weekend. Unfortunately, we are not set up to rent boats, and the development where they use the boat does not allow for rental boats on the lake as it is a private community.
On July 5th, the customer stopped when passing my house and told my mechanic that they had someone else look at the boat, had it fixed, and for us to not come and pick up the boat. They also stated that they were on their way to the boat to go out on it. When we returned to work on July 8th, the customer called and said the boat would not start anymore and asked if we would come tow the boat out. We towed the boat out on July 8th and looked at it at the shop. We found that the melted wires had not been fixed in any way and with using the boat after being told not to run the engine, more extensive damage had occurred. Not only the main wiring harness was melted, but it passed through the connector and burnt the wiring harness under the cowling (engine cover).
So now instead of replacing one harness we would have to replace both harnesses. The main harness (original problem) cost $183.30 and the additional harness, under the cowling cost $506.06. The main harness was readily available, but the other was not. We paid $41.1 I to have it shipped [redacted] 2nd day air. We called to check on the status of the shipment several times, and were told by the company that their processing takes anywhere from 6-10 business days, We finally received the part 15 days later,
Because of the actions by the owner, additional costs were incurred, and the time frame to resolve the issue was also increased. After replacing the harnesses, we were able to get additional information to fix another part that was also damaged. We had an employee drive 3 hours, one way, to pick up that part. This is a [redacted] engine and we are not a dealer for them so parts had to be ordered through another dealer. This added additional time to get parts and we did not have any control over that.
The boat has since been repaired and delivered back to the customer. The customer refused to pay for any of the repairs.

I have reviewed the offer and/or response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], please close the matter but take note of bellow comments .
The relevance of the originality of the motor has nothing to do with the repair.   The engine is made by mercury and the boat is made by [redacted].   [redacted] does not make engines. The motor is identified by its own model # which is a mercury factory #. Anyone who works on boats would know this.  I am not looking for anything further I just feel that this shop has no idea what they are doing when it comes to boat repair.  They claim they have mercury certified mechanics.   I took the boat from here to a real mercury certified mechanic and he had the correct part within 3 days and the boat fixed within the week.   In the beginning when I dropped the boat off I was told 1-2weeks turn around time.  The owner openly admitted to me he does not make much money off of boat repairs and more off selling boats and rigging new boats.  Would have liked to have known this before I dropped it off in the first place.   You can close this complaint.   No further contact required

Review: I purchased a [redacted] from Lake of the Woods Marina on June 11, 2014 which was an expensive purchase for our family. Although it ran fine on the test drive, it did not start back up the first time out. This problem came progressively worse and by the 4th time out it would not start back at all. The boat shop blamed us saying we were probably messing with the wires. After being firm, we were able to get the boat shop to pick the boat up to attempt to repair it. We have waited over 4 weeks for the boat to be repaired. We found the part on line and it can be over night. The boat shop's mechanic said the repair could be done in one day. Every week they have said the part will be in next week and the boat will be ready. We are still waiting for them to repair the problem. We have gone without a working boat from July 1 to now (August 8) and moving forward still without a boat. We feel there is a failure to perform as the boat is still not repaired and if the boat cannot be repaired within a timely manner which we believe could have been one week (four plus weeks later), we would like a full refund as we believe the lemon law applies to this unless we get a repair immediately.Desired Settlement: Repair the boat by Tuesday August 12 or issue a full refund.
