Love the Y
Great for families. Offers community resources beyond what any normal gym offers. The staff are great, too!

Review: On June 2, I went to my Ymca (The Lancaster family YMCA in Lancaster, PA) to place my membership on hold for the summer. I had asked and been told that no notice was required for this. I had thought I could come back on September 2, and since my billing date is the 15th, be paid up until the 15 of September when I would be billed again. Sounds easy, huh?

The form was filled out by them, so that my 3 month hold would start on June 15, not the 2nd as I requested, and end on September 14, not September 2nd. After some discussion about this, And not being able to get the "no notice required" offer honored, I told them to just cancel my membership. The 30 days notice that is required to cancel, according to my contarct with them, (I have a copy of this) , became 43 days. In this Y, there are two different rules: When I joined, I was told that 30 days notice is required to cancel a membership. The contract I signed says this also. But for some odd reason, the cancellation form states that the thirty days notice must be before the billing date. I was charged for 43 days.

I have emailed every person in the Lancaster family YMCA that I have been told to contact, and have not been able to resolve this matter. Because the money I needed to do what I wanted was taken from me, I asked if If I could come back on Oct 15 (I have 6 weeks paid now that I am unable to use) and resume payments on Dec. 1.

Apparently, they have just decided to keep my money and end my membership; frankly I am very upset about this--my stomach has been in knots because of all the stress this has caused me. I have been cheated out of money my family needs. We can not afford to lose this.Desired Settlement: Additional request: be fair to your members. Don'y write up two different policies to pick and choose from, and if an employee says something, honor it. Be honorable! I had always loved my membership before this treatment and said wonderful things about them to the people I work witrh all over Lancaster. I should not not have been billed for an additional month when half a month was already paid for.

I am rejecting this response because:

Since my account was set to end on June 30, I should have not been billed until July 15. The initial contract given to new member states 30 days notice is required to terminate it. It does not say that I had to give notice on the billing date, or I would be forced to lose all money paid up until that day. Even on your Facebook page, your organization replied that 30 days notice is required. It does not state anywhere that I would have to lose money already paid for days in the future. I was upset because I was cheated out of two weeks!

Some of your reply was untrue and did not contain all the information it should have. I was told on the phone and in person that I did not have to give notice to place my membership on hold; that it could begin the day I placed it on hold. When I went to do this, the rule changed. I personally made the call and was there, remember? Your employee was quick to rip up my hold form, and said, "I know you want to quit. " Because I had other plans, and your employees were aware of this, I was not available to come until the 15th.

A bad reputation is hard to overcome, so my suggestion is that you come up with rules that everyone knows and that are reflected on all your paperwork. 30 days isn't the same as 43. No notice required does not mean the same thing as you will lose all money paid so far and then we will grab another month in fees from you. And since I did not start this membership on the 15th to begin with, and your employees made sure my beginning month was prorated, I know that you are capable of making the necessary calculations in order to properly charge your members when they leave. No two people in your organization seem to have the same information. This is not good.

Because I have a job that takes me all over Lancaster, I have friends and acquaintances who go to the Y, and, one friend who may be joining because I unfortunatly recommended you to her family. I don't want them to go through what I have.

It's irrelevant to what I am saying at this point, that I wanted t0 place my membership on hold and then added notice to quit. Although, I did feel as if everyone there was giving me a shove out the door. I really feel that the 6 weeks I have paid should be completely reimbursed at this point in time.

One other pouint that I'd like to make: in an email from [redacted], while discussing my termination, she said I did owe any more money. (I do have the email.) This was dated before the 15th, and yet, I was falsely billed anyway.

Regards,
