I was called out to check out the septic system that was
over full. Since the dry well was not accessible to be checked I told the
homeowner it could be one or two problems; 1. The pipe going from the, septic
tank to the dry well, 2. The dry well failing. I told him I charge a minimum of
$200 to check it out by digging both up approximately 7 feet deep. He told me
to wait till a later date when he would have money to get the septic tank
pumped and pay me the $200. I was called and informed when the tank was to be
pumped. I arrived the next morning to check into the problem. First, I
uncovered the dry well, and then the pipe from the septic tank to the dry well.
I found the pipe in good condition but noticed back flow from the dry well
which indicates over-full. Also, I set up my laser and found it apparent, and
also ran my sewer tape through to be sure it was all clear, and it was. I
installed a new vent pipe on the dry well so it could be checked or pumped,
(the old one was plugged with rocks).
It is illegal to fix or modify a dry well according to
Wisconsin state code, and county code. So to replace the whole system could
cost approximately $6500. That was a rough estimate without soil test, permits,
etc. We spent four hours on the project instead of two, and did not ask for
more than the $200. I explained to the homeowner and his wife what he situation
was. The wife kept firing accusations against me and said if the system needed
to be replaced I would not be hired. I indicated that that is her privilege. I
like when I can show the customer the problem physically which I did to the
homeowner and her son, the homeowner’s wife could not come out. I also
explained the two reasons septic systems like this fail; 1 is old age; this
system would be approximately 40 to 50 years old; 2 is over-use. A system like
this is adequate for approx. a 3 bedroom home, equivalent to 6 occupants. As I
recall, the homeowner told me there are 12 occupants.
We made efforts to compact the soil and rake down clumps. I
The homeowner was very understanding but his wife was very unreasonable.

Review: We had Mr. L[redacted] come out and look at out septic. He told my husband that the drywell was bad. He said he would FIX it for $200. My husband told him to come out and do it. He came out July 9th. Dug up my back yard and outside my fense making a mess. He then called me and very snidly said it will cost you $6500 to fix this. I said to him you told my husband you would fix it for 200 what is this. He got snotty with me. I had my son go out to ask him a question because I am handicapped. He told my son very smartly your mother could have come out here herself. My son said no she can not she is handicapped. He left out house returning later to collect the $200 . My husband and I tried to talk to him because he had told us he would fix it for $200. He got very nasty and I had to tell him to get off our property. He said he did not need business from trash like us.Desired Settlement: I would like to have him fix it like he said he would and if not I want my $200 back, because he did not do anything except make a big mess in the yard.
