Billing for healthcare services is complex and often confusing.  What our staff attempted to explain to this parent is that any procedures performed or medications provided to a patient are billed separate from the office visit...

charge.  The office visit charge is for the evaluation and management of the patient.  The providers assessment of the patient’s condition, diagnosis and medical plan.  If there is need for a procedure or medication there are added charges.
 
It is always more challenging when a caregiver other than the parent bring in the child for care.  We understand this is necessary at times, but it does meant that questions that may have been posed by the parent are potential left unanswered.
 
In this case the child presented to our office with ear pain, a potential ear infection.  The provider found excessive ear wax build up and removed that wax using a curette – a standard medical treatment for this situation.
 
We understand the parent’s frustration at not being aware that procedures performed by providers result in added charges.
 
We have written off the charge for the ear wax removal - $126.  However we will not be removing the office visit charge as there were services provided that day that have associated costs.
