Review: I took a piece of jewelry to LI Gold Mine to be dipped in White gold and gave them one of my own chains to replace the chain that was on there. I was given a price, the jewelry came back, it was not ready when the owner said it would be ready, so I wasted a trip there, no courtesy phone call was given). The jewelry came back almost a week later than told, WAS NOT DIPPED IN ANYTHING, and only the chain was switched with absolute minimal effort and nothing added on by the jeweler. I was still being charged the original amount and they refused to give me back my jewelry unless it was paid for in full. They offered to give me it back the way I gave it to them on the original chain and they have already cut my replacement chain. I've been there 3 times and they were non negotiable. I was told it had to go to NYC and could not be dipped because of the type of metal, but since it still had to go all the way to the city, I was still being charged the amount. I feel they do dirty business with locals, have heard that they buy jewelry (some stolen) from kids knowing they need drug money and I was lied to about my item to be changed out. I am supposed to be getting it back, now with a cut chain, that was mine, and more waisted time traveling there and back.Desired Settlement: They have wasted my time traveling back and forth to their store. Either give me my original jewelry back in the exact condition with absolutely no damage to my original chain. Or charge a realistic fee for switching a chain with absolute minimal effort, my 6 year old could have done what they did! I should not have to pay for travel to a different far away destination for jewelry repair and I should not be paying for a service that wasn't rendered!!

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me and the matter has been resolved.

Sincerely,

Business

Response:

The above client; [redacted] visited our store on 7/**/2014 located a[redacted] in Smithtown requesting a custom repair be done on two pieces of jewelry. She presented one Silver-plated Anchor pendant connected to a silver-plated chain and a plain thin sterling silver chain. She inquired if we would be able to remove the center Anchor from item #1 and re-attach it to the Sterling Silver chain. She also was interested in having the anchor pendant Rhodium plated; ie. "dipped in white gold". The staff member that accepted the job explained to [redacted] that swapping the chains would be no problem to do; however we would find out if the silver plated anchor would hold the rhodium plating when we brought it to our bench jeweler. [redacted] was given an initial estimate of $35.00. She agreed to leave the items with us.

The jeweler removed the plated anchor from the plated chain, & soldered the pendant to the Sterling Silver chain. The Anchor could not be Rhodium dipped. The fee for service was adjusted to $20.00; rather than the $35.00. On July [redacted] was called and a voicemail was left that her item was ready to be picked up. On August [redacted] returned to our store and asked to pick up her necklace. At this time we explained that the Rhodium dipping was not possible and the fee for service was adjusted by $15.00. [redacted] refused to pay and said that it looked as though a child did the work. Upper management was called and offered to take an additional $5.00 off the cost in the spirit of good business; however the client was still not satisfied. She proceeded to tell the employee that her mother works for a local town paper and is on the town chamber committee and that she would be making a formal complaint.

The employee asked [redacted] what she would like in order to feel good about the transaction and she stated at this point there was nothing we could do and that she would not pay more than $5.00. She was told that this would be brought to the attention of human resources and she could come back and pick up her necklace once a determination was made. [redacted] returned to the store to pick up her item and spoke directly with management, she was not charged anything for her inconvenience and was given back her item. She tried to insist on paying the $5.00 that she thought was fair for the work that had been done. No money was accepted and she picked up her new necklace free of charge as well as signed for it.

For the record we do not set our prices according to the location where the job is done. We have set fee's for services rendered. Her fee was adjusted from $35.00 down to $20.00, and on her initial visit to the store to pick up her work order she was instantly offered an additional $5.00 off solely based on our reputation and belief in positive customer service. When she refused to pay anything the staff member explained that they were unable to release her item without having it escalated to our human resources department. In the end she was charged $0.00 and received her new necklace minus the anchor being dipped in Rhodium; which was explained. She received her chain intact. We did not take it back apart and return in pieces, as she stated in her complaint. We have the original repair envelope with all notes recorded; as well as, her signature upon pick up.

As for her second allegation that "we do dirty business with locals" that is purely hearsay and conjecture. We are a local gold buyer/ jewelry store that is Licensed, Bonded, and Insured in both /Nassau and Suffolk County. LI GoldMine is also a member of the local chamber of commerce that her mother is a board director on. All of our transactions are recorded with law enforcement so we are not in the business of supplying local criminals with drug money. We are in good standing with both Suffolk County, NY "Property Recovery Unit" located in Yaphank, NY and Nassau County "Crimes Against Property Squad".

We are open 7 days, have a courteous and professional staff that is well educated and experienced in the jewelry business. We buy Coins, Diamonds,Precious Metals, Antiques, Sterling, do appraisals and welcome new business. Do not hesitate to stop in for a visit!
