Complaint: [redacted] In my opinion, I am rejecting this response because:1) Liberty Shepherds provides no compensation or resolution toward the gross misrepresentation of what they were selling.2) Liberty Shepherds disregards scientific-backed data showing their liability and tremendous negligence In no business is it OK for a business to advertise that what they are selling is healthy and just hours later have serious health issues. In my opinion, the way that Liberty Shepherds has treated this case is dishonorable and highly unethical. [redacted] , I am aware that the BBB does moderating and provides recommendations for resolution. Is that what would be the next step in this case or do you recommend something else?Regards, [redacted]

*** and ***, We received ***'s most recent communication today and hope to put this issue to a close. ***'s communication did not seem to provide any new relevant information We are deeply frustrated that this experience has been so difficult for both *** and *** and we believe everyone is aware that no one is happy with the outcome of ***'s transition to her new home. We believe that both Liberty Shepherds and *** have differing perspectives on ***'s illness and as much as we've tried to communicate, it seems unfortunately in this case we must agree to disagree and each move forwardWhat specifically caused the adverse reaction and subsequent acute illness onset between the 17th and19th may never be fully identifiedHowever, we are remain confident that we provided *** with an excellent standard of care while she was in our possession and we are unwilling to reimburse *** for healthcare costs she incurred for her pet ***, we are glad that *** seems to be doing better now and hope you are able to put this rough month behind youWe sincerely wish you nothing but the best moving forward and hope you enjoy *** for many years to come Sincerely, Liberty Shepherds

*** and *** ***, We apologize for the delay in responding to this complaint, but we wanted to gather all necessary documentation and compile an accurate understanding of the events from which to draw conclusions We at Liberty Shepherds are truly
disappointed that *** had a difficult transition into her new homeWe strive to ensure that each puppy we send home is as healthy as possible and strictly follow the care regimen specified by our veterinarian for each litter Here is some background information on our puppy health care practices:
Each of our puppies are seen by our vet the first business day after birth for overall health and wellness checks. Between 3-weeks we run fecal examinations on several stool samples to select appropriate parasite treatmentIn this case, round worms were found in the fecal sample and the prescribed treatment was Strongid T given based on weight at and weeksEach puppy received both dosages at those agesWe do our best to control parasites in puppies, but this is an ongoing process that will continue to affect domestic dogs until they have are old enough to develop a mature immune systemOur vet recommends puppy vaccinations at 6, 9, 12, and weeksWe use Vanguard 5-way vaccinations***, like each other puppy, received her first vaccination prior to going homeOther puppies who are with us longer, receive additional shots on our vets vaccination schedule
In relation to ***'s health issues, here is the timeline of events to the best of our knowledge compiled from veterinary documentation from ***'s vets, our conversations with ***, our interactions with Acorn Hill Animal Hospital (one of two vet's *** and *** visited) and our primary veterinarian:
2/- *** went home with ***. When *** left our care, she was behaving perfectly healthy and active2/- *** visited Acorn Hill Animal Hospital for her initial puppy cheand fecalAt this che*** was prescribed Panacur by her vetPanacur is a drug used to treat roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and sometimes kinds of tapewormsIt appears that at this point she was not diagnosed with CoccidiaAccording to our conversation with Acorn Hill Animal Hospital at this visit *** was in good health outside of having a high concentration of round wormsThis visit cost $2/- *** visited Perrin-Animal and saw *** *** seems to have brought *** in with symptoms of lethargy and diarrhea*** received a variety of testing including a parovirus test, a full blood panel, and parasite testIt is unclear what the diagnosis was at this point in timeI'm sure *** can provide the vet records if she wishesWe'd be glad to help interpret them if necessaryThis visit was very expensive and cost around $2/- *** visited Perrin-again and saw *** *** This visit included another parasite test and seems to be the first coccidia diagnosis for ***. It unclear in what state of health she was at this visit, but given the minimal treatment level she appears to be fineThis visit cost $2/- *** visited Acorn Hill Animal Hospital This was a standard visit and seemed to have no special care requirementsThis visit cost $2/- *** visited Acorn Hill Animal Hospital This visit *** and *** picked up Albon (a standard coccidia drug) This visit cost $3/- *** visited Acorn Hill Animal Hospital This visit *** and *** receive multiple types of dewormersDiagnosis unclear, but one of the drugs (Praziquantel) is typically used for flat/tape wormsThis visit cost $3/- ***'s first contact to Liberty Shepherd's to explain ***'s condition3/- Liberty Shepherds ran additional fecal tests on the puppies in our care to check for coccidia. No coccidia was found3/- *** visited Acorn Hill Animal Hospital At this visit *** received dog food and an ear packing (I presume this is from an ear infection)This visit cost $
Again, this is the timeline of events as best we can piece it together as we were not present at any of the vet visits after *** went home We have decided to deny ***'s request to be reimbursed for vet billsWe have carefully evaluated the timeline of events, compared ***'s condition and health trajectory with her litter-mates, discussed *** with the vet staff at Acorn Animal Hospital, and revisited our care regimen with our primary vetAfter our evaluation we remain confident that we provided *** with *** in good healthPlease recognize in the timeline above, *** was examined by a vet on 2/and in good overall health At this appointment she received a fecal test that did not show coccidia but did show round wormsAs breeders we partner with new puppy owners on puppy healthWe are responsible for beginning the parasite maintenance that is necessary for all puppies, but this must be continued by new pet owners. It is unlikely that our kennel is the source of the coccidia that *** contracted as coccidia is a communal disease and we never received a positive coccidia test on any puppy under our careWhile some specific puppies and dogs may be carriers of coccidia and immune too the diseases effects, the carriers would still test positive in a coccidia screeningWe discussed other plausible causes of a positive coccidia test for *** with our veterinarian and Acorn Hill Animal Hospital staff, and there are reasonably likely scenarios that *** would have contracted outside of our kennel and tested positive for coccidia in the timeframe mentionedThe most common of these would be consumption of infected feces However, we believe the conversation about coccidia is a mute pointThe reality of the situation is that both round worms and coccidia are very common and very manageable in puppiesUnder circumstances, neither disease causes the severity of the reaction necessary to justify the care *** required in such a short period of timeAs we relayed to ***, we believe the most likely cause of ***'s sudden illness and subsequent emergency visit on 2/was related to consuming some sort of toxin found in her environment We explained our puppy health guarantee to *** when she picked up ***Our health guarantee is a two year replacement policy for any verified genetic defect that requires euthanizationWe do not offer any refunds or accept returns of ill animals because we do not want to risk exposer of our other dogs or puppiesWe reiterated that policy to *** when she requested reimbursement for her vet expensesWe do not, and never insinuated we would, pay personal vet bills Liberty Shepherds
