Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2016/09/15) */
The shingle manufacturer does not warranty any damage to the roof due to improper installation. Damages that will very likely happen if the nails are not in to a solid board or in the proper spot is nails backing up and damaging the shingles and...

or shingles blowing off!
we do not look in the attic of homes unless the homeowner requests that we do so.
The other companies do not do it either and the other ones he called didn't look either.
If there is rotten wood you cant tell by just looking in the attic , unless it is rotted right through or falling down.
He said why didn't we stop when we removed a few shingles, we don't know how the roof deck is until we remove most of the roof, then we and every other company proceed to tell the homeowner , what the condition of the roof is and how much it will cost to replace any extra items, for example the wood.
It was stated on the estimate that rotten wood is $[redacted] per foot , so there was no hidden cost there.
He said that he nailed some nails through the roof and it didn't split, that is because he didn't nail it near a edge of a board, in that case it would split. The nails end up going in all different spots of the boards not just the center. He had gaps in his roof so if we hit a gap or nail above it , then our nails are not in the right spot, and will not hold the shingle as intended.
We do lots of roofs from the 1950 time frame and we don't have to replace the wood on many of them.
We have been in business for over 25 years, the reason why is we do things the right way.
We are installing a 40 year roofing system, there is no sense installing a system that is on there for that long, and not having a suitable roof deck to nail it too!
The owner said he was not giving a choice with the roof.
When we were talking he said his choice was to go over the roof deck the way it was and have no warranty for nails backing up or shingle blow offs.
So that is a choice!
He said to go ahead with the wood like he stated in his complaint.
He said after knowing it had to be resheathed that it was too late to call another contractor.
What would hiring another contractor change?
Not going to change the wood condition or the price, or the warranty the shingle manufacturer has written out.
He could have told us to leave the job at anytime, that is his right as a home owner.
He never said he had a problem with airnailing shingles until the job was finished.
After the job being finished he said he wasn't happy and wanted a 20% reduction in his bill, if not he said he would write a complaint.
We do not change the price of a bill after the job is finished and do not change the bill because of a threat of a complaint!

Let's set the record straight. I did not ever threaten to publish a complaint if they didn't reduce the bill. It was only when the complaint was filed that I first suggested a billing adjustment as a resolution . Actually, it was the only applicable option on the Revdex.com complaint resolution form!
[redacted] With 25 years experience, Jim MacDonald Roofing should be able to properly assess the condition of a roof before submitting an estimate.
