K[redacted]. My handyman, M[redacted], who is an independent contractor, not an employee, spoke with M** regarding an apartment we had coming available for rent. The following is a written response from M[redacted] relating to conversations regarding this upcoming vacancy.
“I received a phone call from K[redacted] who said they were looking for an apartment. I told her we did have one coming up. In the conversation, she stated that her husband worked for Sycamore Springs. I knew the owner of Sycamore and made a phone call to check his reference, in another conversation, I told them he got a good reference and that I would do my best to help them get an apartment. I told them they would have to fill out an application and submit this with a $30 application fee to pay for their credit report. Once this was received, their application would be reviewed by the manager before they could be approved. Their credit report was unsatisfactory and their application was not approved by management. I relayed this information to them verbally, M** showed up at an apartment showing and was very rude and aggressive. I had to politely ask him to leave. I then received a very aggressive voice mail from M** on June 13, 2015 asking why his credit was not good enough and why I wasted his time with the apartment showing. I responded with a text, which is
still available in my phone, “I don't handle the approval process, I just show the apartments". I told him could get a copy of his credit report if he wanted it, as he paid for it. I provided him with a copy of his report within the next couple days, I did not do anything to mislead either M** or K[redacted] relating to renting an apartment. In fact, I did everything I could to help them. I also told them that there would be another apartment becoming available in the upcoming months, as one of our current tenants had cancer and would be leaving her apartment. This was in no way implying that the
current vacancy would be rented to a cancer relative. These texts can be provided if you would like." M[redacted].
I have been in business since 1985 and have never had a complaint filed against me. În fact, I am a Real Estate Broker, a Certified Property Manager, and for 17 years owned a large Property Management Company overseeing a residential portfolio of over 450 units. This is a disgruntled applicant who did not get approved and was never promised an apartment. He paid $30 for a credit report, a copy of which was provided to him upon request. The cost of this report is $27 to me, in addition to a $200 annual membership fee to acquire credit and unlawful retainer reports. This is by no means a source of income or abuse on my part. I am willing to provide proof that paid for the credit report on M[redacted].

Review: After turning in our application to rent a property that m[redacted] told us about( the guy who takes the applications), we were told that we definitely had the place. He said it was ours, and we would just process the credit check and sign papers. M[redacted] said that they were not even going to advertise the property because he was going to rent it to us. We asked him if this was a done deal, so we could turn in our 30 day notice to our current property. He said "YES". We called him a couple days later to move forward with the paperwork, and he told us this..." The owner of the property is not renting through us anymore. I'm very sorry. I have no control over the situation. The owners family member was diagnosed with cancer, and needs the apartment now to move them closer and take care of them". 2 days later there was a posting on craigslist for the same property!! My husband called right away and left a message. M[redacted] texted back with this..." That was a clerical error...should be off tomorrow. " my family member called him and he is still having a showing there and still renting. Businesses should not tell such lies. It's dishonest and now my family if four are going to be out a house because of this unless we can find something else in the next 9 days. I think they are scamming people for their "credit money". With rental companies your either approved or not. NO Stories about people getting cancer and such. I pray they can't ever do this to another family ever again.Desired Settlement: $30 for processing fees. And a stop to scamming families.
