Review: To whom it may concern. In 2010, my daughter attended the Bel Canto Youth Division summer program in Florence, Italy. One of the things the program offered was accreditation of some of the courses through Long Island University (LIU). Our finances were, and still are, precarious, so we thought it was a good idea to purchase some credits in order to save money later when she would hopefully go to college in September 2011.Afterwards, as we were researching and visiting possible schools, we found that these credits were useless. NOT ONE university or conservatory would accept ANY of the courses related to a music major. This seems to be an academic standard of which an accredited certifying body should be aware. Some of the institutions would accept the liberal arts language course. The first bill, which was inflated by $700 (a second ethical lapse), we received in October 2010. I spoke to a lawyer who said that, per contract law, we were not obliged to pay a bill that sought to charge more than was agreed to.Armed with this knowledge, we tried contacting LIU. First, we called [redacted]) who never returned our calls. Next, we contacted the registrar, [redacted], who said we should speak to the [redacted], with whom we never could get in touch (a third example of unprofessionalism). A YEAR later, in December 2011, we received a corrected bill.We then contacted [redacted], the head of the Bel Canto Institute, who said we should have checked and should have known all this. At the time of the program, we had barely started researching, let alone decided, on any possible schools. We depended on their professionalism and fair dealing. She also said that MANY students had used the credits. I dont know where because, as I mentioned before, the consensus is that if you are a music major the music course credits will NOT be accepted and the liberal arts courses MIGHT be!Desired Settlement: We believe that LIU, who offered these credits, knew, or should have known, that these credits were NOT transferable and should NEVER have offered them.We would like LIU to stop sending bills or threatening us with a collection agency for USELESS credits.
