Review: I brought my dog to this facility on June **,2013 because he could no longer walk or control his bladder. They provided me with a low and high end estimate for surgery which we agreed to and paid in full. After receiving additional medication and therapy the bill quickly rose from $8,000 to $12,126.02 which was still paid in full. Upon bringing my dog home they told me he had a UTI which they would only treat for an additional fee which was a few thousand dollars, if I could not afford to pay this they would send my dog home with an [redacted]. After spending over $12,000 this was out of the question, I was financially drained. I had my dog home for a week and he started to decline, I brought him back in on July [redacted] late in the evening. They demanded more money and then said that if I don't have a checkbook or credit card then I can take my dog home, he has a clear bill of health. Within 30 minutes it was determined that he was severely [redacted] and was on the verge on needing a [redacted] and he now had [redacted] as well which is a deadly [redacted]. This was solely due to the fact that I could not afford to pay for the other medication option, they knew that he would die without it. Yet they still scammed me out of more money for the alternative option, upon finding this out they told me they would keep in in their critical care unit for a couple of thousand of dollars per day, I told them that I cannot afford this and that I did not want to put him through anymore testing or medication. In less than 24 hours I put him to sleep, completely disappointed in the care that my animal recieved, not one time did I feel that they were looking out for his best interest, they always demanded more money every time I walked into their facility. They received a total payment of $12,126.02, after my dog was put to sleep a month passed by. They did not ask me for anymore money, they did not advise me that I was to owe anymore money. They sent two condolence cards and that was it. A month later I received a bill for $1,242.83 for treatment I never authorized, I have copies of all receipts and estimates given to me since day one. Out of 10 authorization forms that legally bind you to payment and state that you agree to the listed services, two were signed. Eight of them lacked my signature, including the last one which is for the balance of $1,242.83. I refuse to pay for this since they have already received and absurd amount of money from me and since it has also been a month later. When did they decide to make up this bill to try and get some more money out of me ? It's absolutely disgusting and shows that they do not care about anything but money. I spoke with my lawyer and she advised me to not pay them a penny since I never authorized this "treatment" they preformed, the charges are false and they do not have my signature which further proves that this is an inaccurate charge.Desired Settlement: I want this balance of $1,242.83 written off, I never authorized and/or signed a document that gave them permission to perform any testing or administer any medication to my animal. Legally I am not required to pay for this since I never agreed to it, the fact that they went ahead and did it anyway is illegal. I believe that the sum of $12,126.02 is more than enough for the services they performed and therefore should write off this balance and never contact me again, otherwise legal action will be taken for fraudulent billing, price gouging, harassment, and emotional distress they have caused me.

Response:

To Whom It May Concern,

This letter is in response to complaint ID # [redacted]. At Long Island Veterinary Specialists, we offer progressive medical care for animals with conditions that require state-of-the-art diagnostics and advanced veterinary skill. The complainant brought their pet to our hospital two weeks after the onset of symptoms. Their pet presented with a serious neurologic disease that resulted in [redacted] of both [redacted] and an inability [redacted]. The pet required an advanced spinal MRI, an abdominal ultrasound to assess the health of the urinary bladder and prostate, and a complicated neurosurgery in two locations along the spine. Unfortunately, pets that present with spinal disease may have post-surgery complications such as the inability to urinate or walk without assistance, as was the case with this patient. Additionally, the prognosis decreases with a delay in seeking care from the onset of symptoms. We informed the client of the risks of surgery and p ost-surgery complications. The client agreed with the medical plan verbally and signed the authorization forms to pursue surgery.

We acknowledge the consumer’s concerns and empathize with the loss of their beloved pet as they decided to euthanize. Although their pet was not our family member, our staff feels heartfelt disappointment when a patient for whom they have provided care does not respond fully to our best efforts. We feel we offered the appropriate medical options and support the complainant’s decisions in their pet’s care. It is obvious that the complainant cared deeply for their pet and tried everything they could for the best outcome.

Although the services and financial obligations were clearly explained to the complainant each time we were to provide additional services to their pet, our staff failed to have the client sign the estimate for subsequent treatments resulting in the disputed charges. We acknowledge the consumer’s legal right to not pay for services for which they did not sign, yet we are confident the services and financial expectations were clearly explained.

To date, we have resolved this issue with the complainant. We have absolved the complainant of their financial obligation for the services for which they did not sign and they have agreed to pay the balance on their account for services for which they did sign. We will follow-up with the Revdex.com if there is a change to this outcome. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention, as we take our reputation in the community very seriously.

Regards,
