Lucky D's Hostel Reviews (6)

The guest booked one bed through booking.com but thought that they had booked two.  We only had the one bed available.  This was not our error/fault though the guest seems to believe it is.  The booking that came through was for one bed as shown on their confirmation...

email.  The guest then complained that they had been bitten and was offered to move to a new room.  The guest said they did not have time to move then.  So the guest was told to come back when they had time to move.  The guest never returned to move.  The bites the guest received looked like a mosquito bite and no bed bugs were found in the guest room.  No one else that has been in that room since has complained of being bitten which further makes it more likely that the bites were from a mosquito.   We assumed that the guest probably went to CVS and was told that the bites looked like a bite from a mosquito and so decided not to move.  If the guest was unhappy at the hostel due to the heat/noise/bugs then the guest should have checked out after the first night and we would have refunded the stay then.  You can't stay all 3 nights of your reservation, not change rooms when given the option and then ask for a refund a month later.

I have discussed this with the hostel before. My girlfriend noticed a rash the day we left the hostel, invalidating the claim that the bugs were at the other hotel. The other hotel also did a thorough evaluation (or so they said, I cannot verify this) and found no evidence of bedbugs or other insects. Bedsheets at the hostel had bloodstains from the bites (see attached photo). One employee looked at the stains and commented "oh, there are a lot of them". I don't see any other likely explanation than that the bugs were at the hostel. My guess, based on the location of the majority of the bites (see attached), is the the bugs were in the pillows. These were bagged and thrown away. An employee said he inspected the pillows and found nothing, but I cannot verify this.

I am sorry that you are not happy.  But you stayed all 3 nights of your reservation with us.  If you were unhappy while staying with us and approached us we would have done our best to make you happy, or refunded you if you checked out early.  But after your first approach you never returned to move rooms, or check out early.  We assumed you were happy.  As far as the booking being wrong to start with, as you saw on your confirmation email you had only booked the one bed.  I am sorry but this was your error, not ours.  I wish you had come to us while you were staying with us and we could have made an effort to resolve any problems.   I see you live in LA.  If you and a friend would like to stay with us again I would be very happy to comp your first two nights.  Pete takes everyone out for a happy hour drink at Altitude (a beautiful roof top bar) on Friday evening.  Maybe you can join him and let us try again to impress you as a guest.

Review: I stayed at Lucky D's Hostel the night of July 25, 2015 and the nights of July 28-Aug 1. Two days after the first night, I noticed a rash on my hands and different body parts. It appeared to be poison oak, and although I hadn't been in the wilderness recently, ignored it. Two days after returning to the hostel I noticed a new rash, particularly on the right chest and shoulder area. The last night after some online research, I found some stains on the bed sheets consistent with bed bugs. I notified the hostel the next morning (my last) and they helped me clean my belongings before my flight (staff was quite helpful with this). Upon returning home, my doctor said that the rash was almost certainly insect bites.Desired Settlement: The hostel did refund one night's stay, but I believe I am justified in receiving a full refund for my troubles (I did throw out my suitcase and a few small items, but am not seeking compensation for this), about $267. The hostel owners disagree, and we have been unable to come to a consensus in discussions.

Business

Response:

The rash/bites were noticed the day after his first night at a different establishment. If the bites had occurred at our hostel then they would have been noticed the following morning. When he returned and complained of being bitten on his last morning we immediately did an extensive search of the room, with the guest and no bed bugs were sited, by us or the guest. We then had an exterminator come as we were still worried as he had very clearly been bitten. The exterminator also found no signs of bed bugs. We are confident that his bites took place while he was not staying with us, and if his bites continued when he returned it is likely that he brought a bed bug with him from his motel where he was clearly first bitten. We are not seeking compensation for the exterminator.
