M. Hanna & Sons, Inc. Reviews (5)

11/2/19
Hired this company to do a cement slab. When Mr. Hanna initially came to the house, I asked him questions about: (1) Does he have employees or does he use subcontractors... Never got a straight answer. (2) Are permits for the job included in the price of the job...initially said "No" and "that would be extra" ...however, he DID include the permits in the price...(3) Does he carry liability insurance...he needed to provide this information to our municipality. He started SCREAMING at me at the top of his lungs and I TRIED to explain to him that we ran in to a problem with a contractor on a previous job we had done from a different contractor and I was just trying to cover another potential problem. I couldn't get a word in edge-wise. He got up out of the chair and came toward me screaming "I AM NOT THE OTHER CONTRACTOR"... Come to find out he called his insurance company (in front of me) only to find out he did NOT have insurance so he called another insurance company who told him they couldn't insure him (not sure the reasoning) so they gave him the name of another insurance company with whom he obtained insurance and was able to provide the certificate of insurance to the municipality !

We paid him 1/2 of the $5,500 (the total cost of the job) and told him he'd receive the other half upon completion of the job. The check I wrote out was to M. Hanna & Sons, Inc and he made me change it to just M. Hanna and intial the change made. A few days later he called me and asked me to go to our municipality to pay for the cost of the permits because he stated to me, "I just don't have the money to pay for them." So I went and met him there and paid for the permits (which would come off the balance that is due). The job was completed today but I told him I'd only give him 1/2 of the balance due and upon inspection of the job he'd get the remaining balance. So, I wrote him a check. Come to find out, he called SCREAMING like an IT that he wasn't able to cash the check until 3 days from today UNLESS he would open up an account at the bank we deal with OR pay 2% of the amount of the check because he didn't have an account there... AND, then bank was about to close and he needed to pay his worker that was in need of his pay! I needed to put a stop payment on the check, go to the ATM to get cash to pay him to he could pay his employee. In the meanwhile, on the way to the bank, I called for a police officer to meet me at my house because I was afraid of what he might do and how he would act ! HE IS VERY NASTY ! I wound up having to tell Mr. Michael Hanna to "GET OFF MY PROPERTY AND NEVER STEP FOOT ON IT AGAIN!" I asked the police officer to relay a message to him to tell him to not contact me via phone or I will file harassment charges against him.

I'm sorry that this man apparently does not know how to handle his finances but he is VERY UNPROFESSIONAL. I would NEVER recommend to have this man do any type of work as no business man should EVER talk to a customer as he did to me and also use the foul language he did. I wish I would have seen these review prior to hiring him to do our job !

Michael Hanna and Son’s concrete
installation at [redacted], PA 18042Concrete was poured in mid-November of
2014, and the one 18 foot wide slab heaved and cracked in late
February of 2015. Note that there are no vertical crack control
joints in the slab. Total cost for all work: $7600.00Because the concrete pads slope towards
the house foundation, and there is an inadequate berm and skirt on
the pad, the water drains off the side into the planting area instead
of all draining out of the driveway. Since the ground in the planting
bed was frozen at the time, the water accumulated in the fresh stone
under the slab. It subsequently froze when temperatures dropped
again, which heaved and cracked the slab.Mr. Hanna claims that the cracking was
unavoidable and outside of his control, so he is not responsible for
the failure.I assert that the cracking was
completely avoidable with proper forming during construction and due
diligence on the part of his work crew. Good workmanship standards
dictate the following methods to avoid this type of failure.First by forming the slab
adjacent to the exit of the spout ~8 to 10 inches wider with a berm
to prevent water runoff into the planting area.Secondly, during concrete
pouring and finishing a drainage swale in alignment with the spout
exit should have been formed to force the water to drain out of the
driveway.Thirdly, by sloping both of the
concrete slabs to force drainage away from the house and out of the
driveway.Failure to install the industry
recommended crack control joint in slabs over 10 feet in width also
exacerbated the problem when the slab did heave, as there was no
nearby stress relief joint. http://[redacted]As the driveway exists now, drainage
will continue to be a problem for future freeze and thaw periods in
winters to come. I am looking for Mr. Hanna to do the right thing and
replace the cracked section of the slab. The existing slab should be
cut at the halfway point, the cracked slab half removed, and the
replacement slab poured incorporating the corrections listed
previously.

The crack is due to heaving  due to the downspout not expelling the water on the parking pad, but at the edge, allowing the water to freeze and causing the heaving.
Concrete will shrink + expand with the seasons.
No one can guarantee cracks will not occur.
The severity of...

the past winter caused many problems such as this in the region.Sincerely
MH

Michael Hanna does not stand behind the quality of his work. He performed $7600.00 of concrete work that included a large parking pad. Because of improper sloping of the concrete to ensure drainage to the street and gutter, water accumulated under the pad leading to heaving and cracking over the past winter. I have contacted Mr. Hanna repeatedly, but to date he has made no good faith effort to address my complaint. His only response when I first contacted him was that he is not responsible for any cracking, even if it is do to improper grading on the part of his workers. I find this a very unsatisfactory response.

VERY DISSATISFIED! Do NOT use M. Hanna and Sons, Inc. of Bethlehem, PA. We hired them to replace 3 steps and a landing in March of 2015 and were told they would complete the work in May. After calling them in June for a start date, they reported that they were on a Government contract job and would call when they were available. They said we were not on the top of their list anyway and they would get back to us when they could. They finally showed up in August. They completed the job; however, they we’re very unprofessional as they cleaned their wheel barrows out on our front lawn and left concrete debris on our brick house. Mr. Hanna also subcontracted the rod iron railings and when they were not delivered as promised, I called to check on status and he was yelling and screaming on the top of his lungs that this is normal practice for contractors and we should expect this. I hung up on him as no customer should ever have to take that verbal abuse. Ironically, I deal with contractors for a living; just not unprofessional one’s like him. Another red flag is the contract stipulated a down payment, a start payment, and a completion payment. The first payment check was made out to the Company but the 2 remaining payments were made out to him personally.
This was a lessons learned for us but I want others to know so they are not subjected to dealing with such an unprofessional company as this. In the days, my father would call this kind of guy a “shoe-maker”.
