M. Hanna & Sons Reviews (1)

Michael Hanna and Son’s concrete installation at [redacted] , PA 18042Concrete was poured in mid-November of 2014, and the one foot wide slab heaved and cracked in late February of Note that there are no vertical crack control joints in the slabTotal cost for all work: $7600.00Because the concrete pads slope towards the house foundation, and there is an inadequate berm and skirt on the pad, the water drains off the side into the planting area instead of all draining out of the drivewaySince the ground in the planting bed was frozen at the time, the water accumulated in the fresh stone under the slabIt subsequently froze when temperatures dropped again, which heaved and cracked the slab.MrHanna claims that the cracking was unavoidable and outside of his control, so he is not responsible for the failure.I assert that the cracking was completely avoidable with proper forming during construction and due diligence on the part of his work crewGood workmanship standards dictate the following methods to avoid this type of failure.First by forming the slab adjacent to the exit of the spout ~to inches wider with a berm to prevent water runoff into the planting area.Secondly, during concrete pouring and finishing a drainage swale in alignment with the spout exit should have been formed to force the water to drain out of the driveway.Thirdly, by sloping both of the concrete slabs to force drainage away from the house and out of the driveway.Failure to install the industry recommended crack control joint in slabs over feet in width also exacerbated the problem when the slab did heave, as there was no nearby stress relief jointhttp:// [redacted] As the driveway exists now, drainage will continue to be a problem for future freeze and thaw periods in winters to comeI am looking for MrHanna to do the right thing and replace the cracked section of the slabThe existing slab should be cut at the halfway point, the cracked slab half removed, and the replacement slab poured incorporating the corrections listed previously
