We began working with MLJ Adoptions to fulfill a dream of ours to expand our family through adoption. We researched and were told that it would be fine to adopt overseas. We are US citizens living and working abroad for the United States. MLJ was very happy to get our application fee but then when we started running into roadblocks with the ability to move forward with an adoption because of the specific country we were in we were dropped like a hot potato. There was no willingness to work with us further. We were very saddened by the news and explained our sadness and feelings about what was happening and their response was to ignore us. We feel very lucky that we did not continue through the process with MLJ Adoptions. Ironically, the news that we would have a more difficult adoption because of where we live ended up saving us from working with MLJ. Please be very careful if you engage this agency to handle your adoption.
Our children have been home for over a year now and, as the time passes, we are coming to realize how disappointed we are in our experience. We felt that MLJ took advantage of the adoptive parents' emotions during the adoption process. We were most concerned about meeting our children, so we overlooked many of the "unfortunate events" that happened during our process. We were told our children were together in foster care and they weren't. We were delayed by 2 months because MLJ didn't submit needed paperwork to the state department. When approached about this, they told us that it is paperwork they only provide when asked (even though it states on the state department website that it is needed). They didn't offer to compensate us for their oversight (as it cost us over $2000 in extra fees). They didn't break down the fee costs for us, so we didn't know exactly where all the money was going-which leads to questions of bribery. The stories we were told about our children are different from what is on their paperwork. There is a huge lack of transparency. We didn't receive all the paperwork to show us our children were legally removed from their birth countries. When asked about this, we were sent a long e mail that spoke in circles and never directly addressed our concerns. We are very concerned about the ethical practices happening at MLJ and would not recommend them.
