Initial Business Response /* (1000, 9, 2014/09/10) */
To Whom It May Concern,
For the first complaint about the car sitting for 3 months, Mr. [redacted] was told before he dropped the vehicle off that there were other large jobs in the shop prior to his. He was told that he was welcome to leave...

the car, but we would not be able to work on it until the vehicles in the shop before his were completed. He seemed to have no problem with that. Mr. [redacted] later gave us a deadline to complete as much as we could by August 4th, because he had an appointment with a body shop to get a paint job. He had total knowledge that the vehicle was not complete, and also was given a list of incomplete items. Mr. [redacted] was charged for the work already completed and was supposed to return the vehicle to us after the body shop painted the car. He was also given a receipt of where his $8500 was spent. To be clear, he was not charged for incomplete work. Please note, however, that this job was not as simple as an engine swap. There were many custom modifications made, and many parts to be re-ordered, because they were originally ordered incorrectly by Mr. [redacted]. The vehicle left our shop incomplete by Mr. [redacted]'s choice; he was never told by us to take the car prior to completion. Attached will be a PDF of the invoice that was given to Mr. [redacted]. If you have any other questions, please let us know.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 11, 2014/09/20) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
As I stated in my earlier reply, I have no problem with the painting and refinishing of parts on my car. I knew of course, there would be extra charges for the additional work done for labor and materials. One of the problems, is that in my initial inquiry about doing the engine swap, I was given a quote of $750.00. In asking how [redacted] it would take, I was told a time frame of 2 weeks. Based on that is why I gave this shop the job. Once my car was sitting there for a [redacted] time, they told me the engine swap was going to be $2000.00 because it was complicated, and I would have to wait until the other cars they had there were completed. At this point I agreed because my car was already there for quite a while. Well, there was nothing complicated about it other than to make a new a/c support bracket. Is it my fault that they? a) ordered and installed an incorrect water pump b) shimmed out the water pump pulley, because of the wrong pump, so none of the accessory brackets or pulleys lined up c) incorrectly wired the tachometer, alternator, and the temperature switch d) installed the starter upside down so the gear drive faced away from the flywheel e)left all the bolts loose on the newly installed front suspension f)adjusted the shift linkage wrong g) installed the new a-arm dust flaps in the wheel wells instead of in the engine compartment h) installed a new heater hose without putting in the heater control valve i) installed the new radiator all crimped. These are just some of the things I have an issue with. This job was not rocket science, and should have not taken the time to do it, they said it was. Maybe if the job was done correctly in the first place, they wouldn't have had to tell me it would take more time and money to finish. Waiting for other customer's cars to be done is one thing. Working on the owner's own car while my car sits doesn't go well. And I still don't know what I paid for each part of the job. As of September 17th, the cost to me for correcting the work from M and V has already totaled $1232.50 plus the cost of a new correct water pump. c
Final Business Response /* (4000, 13, 2014/10/01) */
After the initial inquiry of swapping the engine, Mr. [redacted] decided he wanted SIGNIFICANTLY more work done to the car. Some of this work included undercoating the entire vehicle, repairing and refinishing under the hood, replacing struts and bushings, refinishing suspension components, several engine components, the gas tank, hood hinges, radiator support, and the engine bay. This was not just some engine swap and should not be treated as such. To respond to each individual complaint:
A) The first (incorrect) water pump was supplied by Mr. [redacted] himself. We then ordered the correct one for the application, which also came with the hardware needed to mount it properly (shims).
B) Shimming of this pump was necessary and unavoidable. Mr. [redacted] was adamant about having an aluminum water pump (as opposed to the original style cast iron). The cast iron pump would not have required shimming. Shimming was necessary per the manufacturer's specifications.
C) All wires were labelled before removal so a situation like this would not arise. Wires were removed and installed by a certified and licensed electrician. There is no proof of these components not working due to us.
D) Installing a starter upside down is physically impossible. They can only be installed one way. This is not rocket science.
E) Bolts were not torqued to spec due to the vehicle needing a full wheel alignment after we completed our work. We discussed this with Mr. [redacted] and he seemed to understand. If we did torque everything to spec, it would have complicated the alignment procedure for the alignment shop.
F) Full adjustment of the shift linkage could not be done due to vehicle not being finished. Linkage must be adjusted when vehicle is in operating condition, per manufacturer's specifications.
G) Mr. [redacted] is correct about this, and he did make us aware of our error prior to making this complaint. We offered to correct this issue as it is very minor and would take roughly 60 seconds to remedy. Mr. [redacted] elected to do it himself, and we supplied him with new clips in case he broke any during removal.
H) A new heater hose was never used. Preexisting heater hoses were used to complete the setup.
I) A new radiator was not installed either. Mr. [redacted] wanted his original radiator used, so it was sent out, re-cored, and installed. If Mr. [redacted] wanted a new radiator, he could've said so (or ordered one).
For the record, we have never claimed that this job was rocket science. Mr. [redacted] was fully aware that the job was not complete; he accepted the vehicle incomplete and was (seemingly) happy with the work done. This job started as a simple engine swap and turned into a much larger and more complex project.
Consumer Response /* (4200, 19, 2014/10/30) */
M & V [redacted] ordered and installed Weiand part # 9220 Team G water pump. The manufacturer's tech stated it is for a circle track car as does many of the listings for it. There are many aluminum water pumps that fit my application, such as GM #XXXXXXXX, Stewart Warner #XXXXX, and Edelbrock [redacted] No shimming is necessary. they are direct fit replacements. All of the problems with the non-fitting of the pulleys, brackets, and shroud could have been avoided with the correct part.
Apparently all the electrical wires were not labeled, since after not figuring it out, electrical tape was put on the connector end. The tach was plugged directly back into the distributor. An electronic tach as on my Corvette will not work unless a filter is installed inline. They failed to do this.
Installing a high torque starter is possible to be installed upside down and be clocked wrong.
The shop that corrected this was so amazed it was put on this way, they took a picture of it.
The front end bolts did not have to be torqued to specs, only snugged down. At least the toe could have eyeballed somewhat close so it would've been possible to push the car easily.
Any shop competent in transmissions and linkage can adjust said linkage in a non-running car. It was done for mine at the shop that corrected everything.
Where would anybody use old heater hoses on a new engine swap? If the old hoses were used, why wasn't my missing heater control valve inline on the hose where it originally belonged.
It was a typo about the radiator. The radiator hoses were installed all crimped. A simple trim, and they slipped right on like they are supposed to.
