Review: A new Sunbrella awning was installed this spring by MacCarty and Sons. A portion of the awning is leaking, allowing the deck under it to become soaked with water. Let me stress that this is NOT water that is being blown by the wind as MacCarty alleges. Approximately one half of the awning is not leaking. A previous awning which was damaged by a falling tree limb, and which this new awning replaces, never leaked. Both awnings are of the same material. To my knowledge, no one from MacCarty has visited to view and discuss the problem.
The company alleges that the awning is only water repellent and not waterproof, which means that the awning will leak during rains. I disagree in that water repellent (properly applied) means that water should bead on the top surface of the awning and roll off. I am aware that water repellency will wear off as the chemicals wear off due to exposure to the elements and repeated cleaning but the fabric can be treated so as to become water repellent again. Again my previous awning and the awnings owned by neighbors are also water repellent and manage to keep the area under them dry. And again, this is a new awning.
MacCarty and Sons have not replied to several emails to my complaints. These were documented with a number of pictures. It seems the company is simply not interested in making the expenditure that would be required to solve this problem.Desired Settlement: At the very least, I would like the awning to be treated chemically to make it water repellent. This would entail taking it down, cleaning it, treating it, and reinstalling it. To the extent that this does not solve the problem I would like the awning replaced with one that would prevent rain from leaking through.

Both MacCarty & Glenraven have met together with me to review the facts and it appears that we have reached a satisfactory solution. While the problem could not be reproduced with a garden hose, the problem exists none-the-less and should be resolved soon.
