We stained the old deck with Top of the Line Sherwin Williams Duckback solid stain.  No where in the contract did it state that we would be sanding old stain off the deck.  The contract stated power wash and deck stain with solid stain.  We Power washed the deck, and stained with...

solid deck stain from Sherwin Williams.  A couple weeks after completion several pin sized holes appeared on the deck floor due to moisture trying to escape.  We came back and sanded down all pin hole areas and re stained the deck floor with the solid stain.  Since then three of four more pin sized holes have appeared.  This is a common occurrence when staining an old deck with previous semi transparent stain.  The best thing to do is let the deck acclimate to the new stain and enable it to find new areas for moisture to escape.  After a couple months the pin sized holes will go away and the deck will be able to properly breathe.  The worst thing you can do is to continue to pile stain on top.  That will make the holes increase because the moisture will once again have to find new ways to escape.  We are willing to do whatever the customer wants us to do, however we will not warranty the work if the customer wants us to put another coat of stain on top.  I recommend allowing the stain to acclimate and then re access the deck before the weather gets too cold outside.
