Improperly installed bedroom floor. Less than 1 month it's seriously buckling. Wants additional money to repair their error.
Would not ever recommend Maker s Construction to anyone! So very disappointed. Still having issues from a project that was to be completed by the end of November 2019. It is now SIX months from my first payment of 50% to them. Bedroom flooring was not properly evaluated prior to installation & now Anthony P. wants to charge extra to repair. I've dealt with 3 project coordinators who are no longer employed with this company. Now my contact is Liban P., owner who does not accept direct calls and Anthony P., his son who has only had knowledge of my project for a very short time. I am pursuing this entire issue with an arbitrator to try to get it resolved. No one from Maker's is responding to phone calls & emails

Desired Outcome

I am looking for a refund of $3000.00 to cover the cost of labor & materials to remove, repair & replace the floor properly.

We completely understand that you are feeling frustrated. We have no problem fixing the floor and we would not ask you for extra costs to fix that issue. We went to the project site on the 17th of March to see what was happening and to find a way to fix the floors. We were supposed to come back another day to actually fix the flooring because we did not have sufficient materials to do so on that day. But, because of family medical reasons, we were told by you that we were not able to do anything with the project until after March 30th. And we completely understood the issue that was happening. We did not make any plans to go back to the project site until after March 30th. After March 30th is when COVID-19 started becoming very serious here in Florida. We have stopped coming to any clients' houses because we do not want to take the risk of getting a client, a client's family member, or any of the staff sick. We do have the materials to repair the floor, but at the moment it is better to wait until the situation with COVID-19 slows down. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Prior to the initial installation, I questioned the decision to lay the new floor on top of the old floor as there had been problems with the old floor. I was told it would not be an issue. That was on 12/20/19. The first tenting & buckling occurred 12/23/19. As part of the repair on 01/08/20, some of the old floor was removed & pieces of the new floor installed to even out any slope. The second issue was approximately 03/01/20. My husband had a massive heart attack & I was unable to contact you until 03/06/20. Over the phone I was told that because I do not keep my air conditioning at 70 degrees, the humidity caused the buckle. Finally, on 03/24/20 you offered to quote me an additional contract price to provide the sub floor & repair the new floor although you did state that you would not charge me for re installation. You also stated that Liban was tied up until the week of 03/30/20. Should the floor had been installed correctly the first time including removal of the old floor & testing with a moisture meter, there would never have been an issue. For a proper repair, the entire new bedroom floor must be ripped up as well as the original floor. The concrete slab needs to be leveled & sealed with a membrane. Due to the nature of the vinyl plank, none of what is currently installed can be reused & all new flooring is required.

The first time that we met, we were told by you to not remove the flooring that was there. You stated that you did not want to pay for the demolition, and we told you that it was an option only if the temperature were to stay around 75 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The reason why it needs to stay at that temperature is so that the floor does not expand. Because the flooring is not tile, it is a vinyl plank, there is no membrane needed. We are sorry for the inconveniences with the flooring. We have no problem going to the project site to fix the issue at no additional cost.

What you just stated is totally untrue. I questioned the old floor remaining and you told me it could not be removed as some of it was glued and some not. You also stated that the sub floor appeared to be of two different materials, concrete and wood. You never intimated an additional cost for demolition and never said anything about temperature maintenance. No one in Florida would sell a flooring product that required a temperature range that low to remain intact. How could I be comfortable with you repairing your original installation error yet a third time and be sure it will no longer be an issue? Do I get a another guarantee that is actually valid as you did not honor the original as stated in your signed contract? The entire bedroom has to be redone including demolition of the new floor, the old floor, membrane placement and a product to raise the base to the appropriate level. My entire concept was to maintain a flow throughout the flooring. The hallway, bathroom and closet are the same vinyl plank floor with no issues what so ever.

The issue with the buckling has to do with the temperature of the home. When the temperature of the house is changed drastically it leads to expansion and that is when the buckling in the floor can be seen. We are able to go to the project and check out where the issues are happening and remove the baseboard to ensure that when there is a drastic temperature change, the floor has enough room to settle back into its place and reinstall the baseboard. The reasoning behind the baseboard reinstallment is because when the temperature changes, the floor expands and then settles back into place, but there might not be room for it to settle back in after expansion. But we have no problem going back to the project, and fixing the issue once we go and see where the exact problem areas are.

Should you read the information supplied by the vinyl plank floor manufacturer, you will see that temperature changes have no impact on their product. I sent you a copy of this in late March, but will include it again here. The issue was and still is the first floor that remains underneath. Yes you originally removed the baseboard, but you also removed some of this first floor then installed new vinyl plank and replaced the baseboard. The new floor is buckling due to the pressure of being pushed up by the old floor. The old floor is listed under 'non-approved subfloors' (parquet over concrete) per the manufacturer. You continued with the installation although this is very specific and should have been removed. This cannot be fixed by tending to problem areas. The entire parquet floor under the vinyl plank needs to be removed.

I am now in a major situation with the completely new bathroom finished at the end of February by Maker's Construction. Fresh water at the feed line to the shower has been leaking since February. Two-by-fours in the wall and the surrounding insulation are saturated with water. The sewer line connecting the shower to the lavatory and to the vanity sink was disconnected during installation and has been running into the foundation since then. There is now dirty water running out of the side of my house. It has caused a stench on the inside and outside which has attracted hoards of drain flies. I now have an entirely new bathroom that is currently closed off and nonfunctional. Maker's has again shown that they do not know what they are doing and have no business advertising that they are a contractor.

At this point I will wait for response & info from Mr. at *** I would also prefer to see these issues completely resolved so that I may have my home back in intact & in complete function ability as it is currently very unsatisfactory.
