In the interest of sparing the reader a long drawn out story, my experience with Malkins was thoroughly disappointing. I started to look at purchasing flooring for a house we were closing on in April of 2013. The closing was scheduled for the 1st week of May. I saw on their website that Malkins was offering 3 years no interest on a certain brand of carpet purchased through a credit card that was administered by GE Capital. At the time, all the other flooring dealers were offering a 1 year no interest on purchases so I thought this was a better deal. All of my initial dealings with Sal the sales person, I made sure dealt around getting this deal. He showed me the specific carpet brand and gave me the timeline as to when the carpet had to be purchased by. I filled out an application in April and had them hold it until after the house closed in May to set up the account. After the closing, the application was put through and Sal came out and measured the house for the carpeting that we chose. He then called me and told me the price and that the total amount of the credit line did not cover the purchase. I told him I would put the rest on my AMEX. A few days before the delivery I called back and gave him the number to run it through. I never did receive an invoice or a copy of the application. In addition, at no time did he ask for any additional funds.

The carpet installers had to come to the house on 5 different occasions, four over a holiday weekend (Friday-Monday) and once a week later to finish installing the carpet. Sal had under measured the carpet so there was not enough to complete the job. The carpet installers had to come back because 2 of their installers left on the second day when they realized there was not enough carpet even though there was enough carpet to finish the house except for a part of the upstairs. The installers also put back on closet doors that would not open because the carpet was too high. I had to take the doors down and undercut them myself. When I asked the installers about this, they said they didn’t do that service for Malkins, but “we could work something out”. My translation of that is, “Malkins is too cheap to pay us to do that, but I can do it if you pay me more”.

I received my first statement from GE capital in late May and low and behold the interest is only deferred for 12 months, not 3 years. I called Sal and asked him about it, he said at this time you had to put a third down to get that deal. I structured my purchase around that offer and had 2 separate conversations with Sal about how much additional money was needed for the purchase, and still I didn’t know anything about a third down until after I get the first bill. Of course, Sal said he would check into it and get back to me; that was 2 weeks ago.

I went with Malkins because I had heard from others that they were a reputable dealer and I thought they offered a better deal than the others. Bottom line, if you think you going to pay a little extra here and get superior service, don’t waste your money, go to some other dealer. Once Malkins and their sales staff have been paid, they could care less.
