Maples Motel

Where to start. Keep in mind this is only the second time I have ever created a review for a business. I was so mad I would be doing everyone else an injustice by not taking time to review the Maples Motel.
I stayed here 10 years ago with guy friends on a fishing trip. Bare bones, $35 a nite and splitting the cost two ways, at the time it was a deal. Since then things have definitely changed. Never top of the line but simply a place to sleep that, well, at the time, was better than our truck.
For this trip, I called two days before arrival with my 14 and 11 year old sons. Again, a fishing trip was the reason for the visit. Understanding the conveniences 10 years ago, we just wanted a clean place to lay our heads and thought this would do. When I called I spoke with the owner, [redacted]. I asked for a room with two beds and a roll away or fold out. He told me that he would upgrade us to their suite that had a fold out couch for $79.00 not the normal $145.00. Ok deal right?
We arrived to the Maples motel and were greeted by [redacted] pleasantly but only to be told that he had a party of 8 arrive prior to us so he proceeded to give our room to them. He explained 8 people to 3 people, you understand? Then proceeded to tell me that my boys could sleep in the same bed together. Ok, I get it. Unhappy but it is 9 p.m., we had been fishing all day and were tired. Not to mention after getting off the water my oldest said that his ear infection that had been gone two weeks prior was back and his head hurt. After finding that Walgreens was out of his medicine prior to check in...and that we needed to go back again in an hour after they had time to fill another prescription, we decided to check out our room. [redacted] explained that he placed us in room #33. Still charging the $79.00 for a standard room. We walked in to our NON SMOKING room....REEEEEK of smoke and one of the beds were unmade. Not unmade like someone was cleaning the room, however, unmade like sheets were pulled down from someone just getting up from their nap. Hard to believe I could even see this after dark because the light switch inside the door did not even turn on the lights. I had to walk to the lamp between the beds to turn them on so I could see. And, immediately after finding the switch and seeing the light bulbs turn on, I recognized the inch of dust around the entire top of the lamp. I looked no further.
I went back to the office and told Mr. Allen that the bed was unmade and the room smelled like smoke. His response....I am not sure how that could be, the gentleman that stays in there left on Tuesday. As if I was making it up right? Then I addressed the smoky room, contrary to the key that said Non Smoking #33. [redacted] told me they are all supposed to be non smoking rooms but people still seem to smoke in them.....He gave me a different room key....#29 and yet again another Non Smoking room.....Still unhappy and tired, we walked across the street to Sportsmans bar for what was a very good burger meal. Finished dinner, checked out our room....Wow...REEEEEK like smoke and super dirty....dusty, beds sagged horribly in the middle as if they were last replaced 30 years ago when the owner bought the place (as they promote...same family owned business for 30 years).
I looked no further...I went to the office to find the door locked with a phone number to call. I did so and spoke with Mr. Allen. I told him that this room also smelled horribly of smoke and was generally disgusting and asked for a refund because initially I should have told him no due to not having a 3rd bed for my child to sleep. He told me that I needed to come to the office to get my refund, I said ok and he hung up on me. Now 10 p.m.
I stood outside the office for 21 minutes and called again. He answered a rude manner such that one should not speak to a paying customer. I asked if he was going to provide me a refund and he said that I needed to come to the office. I explained that I had been standing outside his locked door for some 21 minutes now. He arrived to the door and let me in and spoke first by saying " I dont even want to hear about it....Sounds like you and your kids need to stay at the Taj Mahal". I told him that I wanted my refund and that he should have provided what I paid for in the beginning, the 3rd bed, or at least called to let me know it was no longer available. He said he will never open that office door again after 10p. Shoved by refund receipt at me and ushered me to the door. We left and went down the road to the SLEEP INN and got a clean room and breakfast for $84.00 plus tax. Could only stay one night because they too were booked the next night because of a ski show. Simply cut our trip short by a day.
