I am writing this letter in response to an incident in my store on April 15, 2015 referenced in your company's letter. Received April 23.
Our companies policy on purchasing age sensitive materials is very simple. "Check ID'S on any and all age sensitive products or lose your...
job''. The lady in question did not have her ID and made a scene in front of other customers, employees, and owner. All of whom will gladly attest to her behavior. As she herself stated in her original complaint, she used foul language upon leaving the store to receive said ID and continued to misbehave on her way back into the store. The manager stepped in at this point and kindly let her know that an ID is not optional. And it does not matter how often anyone is in the store because it is not always possible to remember every customer. We have over 1000 customers a day. And on the day in question actually saw over 1757 customers through our establishment, which can be verified through our stores daily reports. Included with our response is a redacted copy of our employee guidelines that must be agreed to and signed by each new hire. It explicitly states the need to check ID'S on any age sensitive purchases or risk being terminated.
She also failed to mention in her complaint, that she referred to my manager as a "f[redacted]ing racist [redacted]. This kind of language will not be tolerated under any circumstances. This outburst and this outburst alone is why we threatened to call the police.
Asking to see a customers ID for age sensitive materials is not a race issue. It is an age issue. No one spoke to her any differently than they would have any other customer who wanted said materials and didn't want to show an ID for them. The fact that she was inconvenienced and did not want to walk back out to her car for her ID was in no way the fault of the establishment or the employees inside. And it in NO WAY justifies racist comments.
Everyone, including the complainant, is welcome in this store. However, ID'S will continue to be required to purchase any age restrictive products.
Thank you for your inquiry into this matter
