Mariden Group, Inc Reviews (5)

Review: A family group tour to Italy was originally planned for June 10 to June 22nd. However, about 2 months before departure, the dates were changed to June 12 to June 23. The trip had been set up in 2012, and everyone going made payments throughout the year. Once final payment was made, the travel agency said to expect our tickets and itinerary in about a week. Several attempts were made to secure the tickets & itinerary, but we kept getting put off. A few days prior to schedule departure, the travel agency called and said that [redacted] airlines pulled the group booking and suggested the trip be take in mid-July. This change was not possible or acceptable for all 14 travelers. My husband and I went to [redacted] on June 11 to speak to a representative and see if there was any way the trip could be saved. The person we spoke to, [redacted] (program manager) said their owner went to Canada to speak to their management at Mariden Int'l regarding the situation. [redacted] asked us what the group would accept, and we stated that we would accept a departure date nlt June 13, and if this couldn't happen, we wanted our money back. [redacted] informed us he had conveyed our wishes to his boss. That same evening, an email was sent from the owner stating the trip was canceled and Mariden USA was going to declare bankruptcy under Chapter 11. We have since learned that they have not taken any action and are deliberating whether to file under Chapter 7 or Chapter 11. In addition to the basic facts provided, my husband and I, as well as my sister and her husband, purchased travel insurance for the trip. When speaking to [redacted], we learned that for the insurance to take affect, 10 people in the group needed to purchase the insurance. Since only 4 of us did, it is my feeling Mariden USA should have returned our money as soon as this was evident. Their failure to do so is another indicator of the fraud this company is perpetrating. When things started going south with this travel agency, we found several more examples where they booked group trips and tried to change the dates at the last minute. This company needs to clean up their act or go out of business permanently and quit scamming innocent people.Desired Settlement: Because there was never a trip, all 14 members of our group should be refunded their money in full. As of right now, Meriden is sitting with our money and trying to decide what they are going to do to protect themselves.

Review: My son, a juvenile, paid for a trip to Europe, initially scheduled for the summer of 2012 and was rescheduled to the summer of 2013. On 02-29-13, the trip was paid for in full in the amount of $5251.00. On March 15, 2013, I received a letter from Mariden advising that there was insufficient student participation for the Europe trip, therefore, my son was being redirected to a Spain trip that would depart on June 25, 2013, In their letter, it states that if my son decided to go to Spain, Mariden would refund the difference between the two trips. The Spain trip cost $3715.00 making a difference of $1536.00. I subsequently contacted Mariden and spoke with "[redacted]". I advised [redacted] that my son would participate in the Spain trip. He advised that my son was already slated for the Spain trip and assured me he would forward to me all travel documents, itineraries, documentation, etc. required for him to go. He further told me that I would receive the refund two weeks to ten days prior to departure. In spite of sending numerous e-mails to [redacted] and another representative, [redacted], I never received any travel documents for my son to participate in the Spain trip. The only response I received from [redacted] pursuant to my request for the documents was on June 6th acknowledging receipt of my e-mail and advising me that he would get back to me "as soon as possible." I received no other correspondence or contact from Mariden. My son was deprived of the trip. Mariden kept all of his money and he received NOTHING for it .Desired Settlement: FULL REFUND BY CERTIFIED CHECK

Review: We accepted an agreement to go on a trip to London, Paris, and Normandy for eleven days in July 2013 with Mariden USA. Our group had six people. Mariden verbally told us that they would find the number of people to meet their minimum requirement. Originally they told us 18 people were required and several months later they said that 10 would be acceptable. In December they asked us for an initial deposit to purchase the airline tickets in advance so they could save money (which they never did). We paid that and continued to pay the required amount of money the next few months, close to $4000 each person At the end of March, they told us that the trip could not go as planned because there weren't enough people. They gave us several option and none were acceptable. Option 1: Wait a year and go with a larger group. Option 2: Go to

Spain for more money, fewer days, and in a different month. Option 3: Get a doctor to write a note saying we were not physically able to go. Option 4: Add $2000 more per person.

We have asked for our money back in person, in an email, and a letter. Mariden responded saying they do not refund money . One couple was able to get their money back since they paid through [redacted]. Four of us paid cash and have not received any of our money back .Desired Settlement: Money back!

Review: Mariden required that we pay a $500 non-refundable deposit when we registered my daughter for a school group trip. The deposit was paid along with an additional $4,105 to cover the cost of the trip. Several students opted to drop out of the trip which reduced the travelers below the threshold of the number of students required to fully fund the trip. Because the students dropped off of the trip in a timely fashion, Mariden did not spend any of the moneys paid for airfare, hotel, or other accommodations. Mariden has subsequently refused to refund the unused portion of the non-deposit money that was paid for the trip.Desired Settlement: I expect to receive a full refund of the unused portion of the money paid to Mariden. I do not expect any of the $500 deposit to be refunded, because I accepted the condition of that being a non-refundable deposit. However, the fact that there was a non-refundable deposit implies that the balance can be refunded in the event that it is not utilized. Given that they did not purchase airfare, hotel, or any other accommodations; I would expect a refund of $4,105 that were not designated as non-refundable deposit.

Review: I started working with Mariden two years ago to arrange a trip for my students to Germany and Italy. They were chosen because they accept payments directly and offer college credit. Everything was going smoothly until last summer. In August, I was informed that we were working with Mariden, USA not Mariden International. In September and December - students who were paid in full were cancelled without notice. Then they were charged a fee to be re-enrolled. Parents and myself could not contact Mariden, our e-mails were not answered. Eventually, I reached the president of the company - [redacted] - who stated that it was my fault for the problems and that they did not need our business as they had other customers. By the time everything calmed over, we were down to 9 travelers and myself. At this point, we thought our departure date was June 10th. On Tuesday June 5th, - I was told that tickets had not been purchased and that the trip could only continue of we moved the departure to July 14th and each student paid an additional $1400 on top of the $4605 everyone had paid. (On May 14th - I had spoke to [redacted] who stated that every student was paid in full but 4. All were paid in full by that Friday via a fed ex package that I sent since Mariden was having trouble processing credit card payments.) Since the majority of the students traveling with us are seniors and starting at the University or in the military, switching the dates would not work. Nor would the switched dates work with the families we were doing a homestay with in Garbsen Germany. I then requested options from Mariden. They stated to check the insurance we all purchased. Based on my understanding, insurance only kicks in if a departure date is set - hence tickets are purchased. Since this has not occurred, I again e-mailed Mariden asking for more detail. This e-mail took place on Wednesday June 5th. I have yet to hear back.

The parents are extremely concerned about placing their children in the hands of Mariden, USA for a trip to Europe. If the company cannot be bothered to answer the phone when called during business hours or bothered to return an e-mail in less than 5 business days - will they be on site to help in case of issues arising during the trip. When asked about the flooding in Germany, I was told that it was no big deal. I asked if they knew that several parts of Germany were deemed in a State of Emergency. Again, I was told this was of no consequence. Mariden, USA has lost all and any trust we had in being able to keep the students and myself secure based on their customer service.

(All dates should be accurate within a few days of each other. If needed the exact dates of contact in the message can be given, they are just not in front of me at the moment.)Desired Settlement: We would like our money refunded since Mariden has not used the money to purchase any of the services they were hired to do so. We understand that they may need to keep the deposit that each of us put in but do not understand them keeping all the money when they have not used it.
