Mario Mazzella Contracting Corp. Reviews (1)

Review: Mazzella Contracting installed a laminate floor in my adjoined dining room and kitchen approximately five months ago. The floor now has laminate slats that have chipped, warped, and separated because the new floor was installed over the old linoleum floor that was loose and broken. This is a dangerous tripping hazard. THE CONTRACT CLEARLY STATES THAT THE OLD FLOOR WAS TO BE REMOVED ALONG WITH THE BAEBOARD MOULDING.

The kitchen and dining room floors were at slightly different heights. The two floors were not leveled. As a result the pieces of the new floor straddling the kitchen/dining room have created an uneven hazardous surface.

Two weeks ago, Mazzella Contracting installed a new dishwasher (6/**/15). The dishwasher did not fit what was an industry standard opening because the laminate floor (with the old linoleum floor that wasn't removed) was too thick, reducing the size of the opening for the dishwasher. A notch was cut in the counter top to accommodate the dishwasher. There was no ground wire installed as clearly stated in the manufacturer's installation guide ([redacted].).

[redacted] delivered the dishwasher approximately two weeks earlier. They refused to install it because the opening was not large enough to install an industry standard dishwasher.Desired Settlement: The resolution I desire is a complete refund of labor and material charges for the floor installed in my kitchen and dining room.

Response:

Hi. This is my response to the complaint: Mario Mazzella Contracting Corp. did work for M[redacted]. We removed the top cabinets on the kitchen area. Replaced new cabinets. Owner did not want to replace the bottom cabinets. We tried to remove plastic tiles which they are only 1/8 of an inch thick. We explained to the owner that we installed pergo floors 1/4 of an inch thick. When the dishwasher broke, they claimed that the new one could not fit. I went there with my plumber to disconnect the dishwasher installed and did some plumbing free at my cost. No complaint from the owner. Owner has rug to meet with pergo and we installed bevel edging to meet. He is complaining for 1/4 of an inch of elevation. We completed the bathroom on 2nd floor. No complaint from the owner. We completed the bathroom on the first floor. No complaint from the owner. I cannot understand the problem when you work with old structure and you after compromise the work and the right job to take the bottom cabinets out as we explained to the owner. Thank you.

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

The old floor was supposed to be removed as stated in the contract. It was not. The old floor is linoleum, not plastic. The new floor is 1/2 inch thick not 1/4 inch as they state in their reply. I know this because I measured it when I had to remove the installed floor under the old refrigerator when it was replaced. This part of the new floor was removed so the new refrigerator could fit under the new hanging cabinets. The dishwasher opening was an industry standard opening UNTIL the 1/2 INCH THICK new floor was installed. The opening then became too small to install a standard size dishwasher In order to remove the old dishwasher they had to cut the feet on it in order to lift it over the 1/2 inch thick floor. When the new dishwasher was installed a large notch was cut into the countertop (where one was not needed before) to install the new dishwasher. This is an obvious and clear indication that the opening was no longer big enough because of the 1/2 inch thick floor. The plumber came the next day to make the plumbing connection to the water line. The electrical installation was wrong because there was no ground wire installed as stated by the manufacturer in the installation manual which I made available to the installer before installation began. The difference in elevation between the living room rug and the new floor is 1/2 inch. The bevel edge installed is too narrow to cover this difference in height safely. The nails have pulled out creating a tripping hazard. This came about as a result of normally walking over it over a period of time. I quote from his reply: "I cannot understand the problem when you work with old structure and you after compromise the work and the right job to take the bottom cabinets out as we explained to the owner." This was explained to me AFTER the floor work had begun. There can be no compromise once the work had begun. If I was told this BEFORE the work had begun, then I would have had a decision to make. I would have made the decision not to replace the floor. WHY DID THEY NOT TELL METHIS BEFORE THE WORK HAD BEGUN?
