Markel Insurance Company Reviews (38)

Revdex.com:
I have reviewed the offer and/or response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint.  For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.
The company does not take any responsibility for their lack of support or communication except to place the blame on a new client like me who may not understand their processes. Although a veteran educator of thirty years, so I am no dummy, their arrogance once again and lack of service is reprehensible. Once I received their audit paperwork in March, I called their office to find out what I had to do. As they can plainly see, I took action and did what I was supposed to do. My complaint stands but it is evident they do not care and they lady that responded should be fired for her lack of care. My next step will be to write the owners to let them know what losers they have running their company because they do appear to be keen businessmen but not men who lack empathy. This woman did not even check their records other than the obvious. The second part of my complaint is the  lack of customer service on their part; ie., alternate routes besides the 9-5 times for  online chat times, one question choices for resetting passwords. She ignored these items. She needs to be fired-she is not doing her job and will lose this company clients. She is nothing more than a paper pusher. I have her name and she will be named in my letter to Anthony and Steven M[redacted], Thomas G[redacted] and Richard W[redacted]. She just sluffed off the wrong person.

Dear [redacted]:
Our office is in receipt of the complaint submitted by [redacted] on behalf of [redacted] on April 21, 2014. The captioned policy is a New Business Commercial Auto Garage Dealers policy with a term of 2/8/2014 to...

2/8/2015.
We wish to clarify that this policy was issued to an [redacted] insured and we followed the cancellation requirements of the State of [redacted].
The captioned policy was issued with a total premium due $4469. On March 19, 2014 a notice of cancellation was issued with an effective date of April 24, 2014. The pro-rata policy cancellation transaction was recently processed in our system and a return premium of $[redacted] will be issued to the insured. Contrary to the insured’s complaint, there is no 25% deduction or cancellation fee associated with the termination of this policy. The amount being retained by the company solely reflects premium associated with 75 days for which Markel provided coverage.
Upon binding this policy on 2/10/2014, it was clearly communicated that several conditions needed to be satisfied in order for us to provide coverage. Specifically we requested that a completed application for insurance be provided and depending on review of the additional information, we reserved the right to amend or withdraw terms.
We did not receive a signed application until March 17, 2014. Our application includes a section that requires that the spouse and all household members over 14 years of age be listed. A review of the signed and completed application revealed that the application was not accurately completed. It did not include the [redacted]’s spouse; nothing was mentioned about the [redacted], having a suspended driver’s license; nor was information provided for [redacted]. Subsequent to receiving the application, we inquired as to why the [redacted] was not active in the business and why the employees were furnished automobiles and did not receive an explanation until 4/3/2014. Our underwriting guidelines dictate that we receive accurate representation on the application in order to provide coverage. Further providing coverage to an [redacted] with a suspended driver’s license is not in accordance with our underwriting guidelines.
Since a review of the application submitted revealed the risk failed to meet our underwriting guidelines, we sent out a notice of cancellation, as required by [redacted] code 215 ILCS 5/143.16.
Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact [redacted] at ([redacted] ext.[redacted], by e-mail at [redacted] or by mail at the address[redacted].
Sincerely,
[redacted]

compensation insurance was submitted to MSI on behalf of Pump It Up Longview with a classification code of 8017 (Video Game Room Operation). The insured secured workers compensation insurance through Markel Insurance Company effective 6/20/14 under policy [redacted] The insured’s policy was renewed under [redacted] and it was determined through a standard audit that classification code 9016 (Amusement - Park Or Exhibition Operation & Drivers) was the appropriate classification for the insured’s nature of operations. Therefore payroll was moved to classification code 9016. Upon receiving this complaint, MSI’s premium audit manager researched the insured’s concerns and determined there was a breakdown in communication with the insured’s payroll reporting agency. Due to this fact, the insured’s policy is being revised on today’s date and a follow up phone call will be made to explain the revision. This will result in a zero balance for the insured. MSI hopes this resolves any concerns and respectfully requests that this complaint be dismissed.Thank you for your time in this matter.

Review: I switched to Markel for my small business Workers Comp Insurance needs. They offered a service where I simply sent them an email each pay period with my payroll information for my staff and they would debit my account for the appropriate amount of insurance charges for that period. (policy # [redacted]). I sent them my payrolls for each pay period for the year and at the end of the year they asked for an audit form to be submitted to them with my payroll totals for the year. I sent this form in to them (it was the same total as the total of all my payrolls that I submitted to them), but then they said I owed them an additional $542.72 because they did not charge me the full amount they should have throughout the year. This was a bait and switch in order to have me believe their insurance was cheaper so that I would switch over and then hit me at the end of the year with a large bill. I have complained and discussed the issues with them and received no help or explanation as to why they didn't charge me the correct amounts during the year as they said they would. My business is now closed and they are calling and emailing trying to collect this amount that I do not feel I owe. If this amount (spread out over the year) was what I was shown when I signed on with them I would have never switched as it is higher then what I was paying previously.Desired Settlement: I would like the $542.72 that Markel says I still owe to be credited from my account and the collections to stop.

Review: My vehicle was damaged by a person with Markel insurance. I filed a claim (received a claim number), and was given the name and number of an agent to handle my claim. Over a three week period I called and left multiple messages with the agent, but have not received any calls back.Desired Settlement: I'd like my car fixed for the damages done.

Response:

Dear Ms. Boykin,

We are in receipt of your inquiry regarding the above mentioned loss and appreciate the opportunity to address this matter. Please accept this response on behalf of [redacted] in the above referenced matter. [redacted] is an approved surplus lines carrier in the State of Virginia. Markel Service, Incorporated is the claims service manager for [redacted]. Below is a summary of our findings.

Our office received notice of this loss a few weeks ago but it was originally believed to relate to another pending claim involving our insured. After receipt of your notification on May 30, 2013, we were able to determine this matter related to a separate incident. We immediately set up the loss new under our claim number [redacted] and assigned it to our senior claims examiner [redacted]. Upon receipt of the claim, Mr. [redacted] spoke with both our insured's representative and Mr. [redacted] to obtain the loss facts and request pertinent documentation.

This loss involved damages to Mr. [redacted]'s 1997 [redacted] which is claimed to have been damaged on or about April 25, 2013 during our insured's transport of this vehicle. The claim was submitted under the Motor Truck Cargo policy our customer carries with [redacted].

During the course of the investigation, our insured denied causing any damages to Mr. [redacted]'s vehicle. Additionally, the Bill of Lading for this transport was signed at the time the vehicle was delivered to Mr. [redacted] and there were no notations of any damages caused during the course of the transport. Given this information, we were unable to find sufficient evidence to show that any of the claimed damages to Mr. [redacted]'s vehicle were caused while being transported by our insured. Additionally, even if it could be proven that the damages to Mr. [redacted]'s vehicle were caused while being transported by our customer, [redacted] would not be able to extend any payment to Mr. [redacted] for this loss as the repair estimate he provided totals $1,539.02, which falls below our insured's policy deductible.

We have sent a letter both to our insured and to Mr. [redacted] advising of the coverage decision made on this claim and the reasons therefor.

I hope our response has provided the information needed to understand our handling of this claim and to address the concerns outlined in Mr. [redacted]'s inquiry. In the event that your require any additional information, feel free to contact me at [redacted], [redacted]

Review: I have been attempting to drop insurance coverage with Markel and they insist on renewing coverage. They automatically renewed the policy after I informed them the business was being sold and the company was going to be shutting down.Desired Settlement: I would like them to stop sending me renewal information and insisting that they are and have been providing coverage.

Response:

Dear Ms. [redacted]: Please be advised that [redacted], a division

of Markel Service, Incorporated, (herein “[redacted]”) is the servicing entity

for Markel Insurance Company. [redacted] secured workers

compensation insurance through Markel Insurance Company effective 4/1/13 under

policy [redacted]. The policy was issued with an estimated premium of

$3165.00. The premium for a workers compensation insurance policy is based off

estimated payroll and upon expiration the insured must submit payroll documents

to determine the final audited premium. A premium audit could result in a

refund or additional premium being owed depending on the outcome. The policy term

for [redacted] was set to expire on 4/1/14 and therefore, on 3/26/14 audit

paperwork was sent to the insured to complete and return to [redacted]. The

insured provided the proper payroll records and an audit was completed on

policy [redacted]. The final audited premium was $3282.00. A billing

statement was sent to the insured regarding the additional premium in the

amount of $117.00 and full payment was received on 6/1/14. Policy [redacted]

has a zero balance. On 1/27/14 a renewal offer was generated and mailed to the

insured for the 2014-2015 coverage period. The renewal quote was accepted by

the insured’s agent and policy [redacted] was issued effective 4/1/14 with

an estimated premium of $7141.00. Payment regarding the estimated premium was

received in full. On 2/4/15 a renewal offer was generated and mailed to the

insured for the 2015-2016 coverage period. [redacted] was set to expire on

4/1/15 and on 3/26/15 audit paperwork was sent to the insured. On 4/2/15

[redacted] received the insured’s payroll records and an audit was completed on

policy [redacted]. The final audited premium was $8291.00. Billing

statements were mailed to the insured regarding the additional $1,150.00 in premium;

however no payment has been received. Late fees totaling $75.00 have been

incurred as result of no payment. Currently Policy [redacted] has a balance

of $1225.00. [redacted] has been in contact with the insured regarding the

outstanding balance on policy [redacted] and possible payment arrangements.

On 3/3/15 the insured informed us that [redacted] was no longer

open and they would not be renewing the policy. The renewal offer for the

2015-2016 coverage period was declined by the insured’s agent and never

automatically renewed. [redacted] has no record of a signed Cancellation Notice

from the insured. No active coverage currently exists through Markel Insurance

Company. [redacted] hopes this resolves any concerns and respectfully requests

that this complaint be dismissed. Thank you for your time in this matter.

Dear [redacted]:

Our office is in receipt of the complaint submitted by [redacted] on behalf of [redacted] on April 21, 2014. The captioned policy is a New Business Commercial Auto Garage Dealers policy with a term of 2/8/2014 to 2/8/2015.

Should you have any questions or require additional information, please contact [redacted] at ([redacted]) [redacted] ext.[redacted], by e-mail at [redacted] or by mail at the address[redacted].

Review: My work vehicle was damaged by a non-emergency Ambulance with Markel insurance. I filed a claim (received a claim number), and was given the name and number of an agent to handle my claim. First their agent told me that it was not up to the police to determine who was at fault it was their decision, then they told me that it’s my responsibility to fix my truck, then they said my wages were not worth replacing unless I yield to all of the crazy ideas they have about my salary. They appear to not have a clue about the Heavy Highway Industry, as they keep asking for things as if I have a staff, etc. Over a now 5 week period I called, faxed and emailed trying to get this company to replace my loss wages. I gave them the actual loss minus normal fuel, I gave them the average of 6 pay period, also minus averaged fuel, as I was told by my insurance company as to how they who insure Heavy Highway practice because they said if their insured are at fault they try to settle as quickly as possible and not put the injured party through unnecessary stress. I contacted my insurance company regarding their claim that I am responsible for fixing my own truck and their belief that I am not due wages because I had a duty to anticipate their insured running me off the road while making a left turn in the fork of a busy highway while driving in front of a sheriff deputy car who witnessed the entire accident. Now their person I shall refer as the human want me to give her everything except my grandkids she want my jobs cancelled checks, she want my past income tax, she want my contracts from my job, she want my bank statements, I am surprised she haven’t asked me to sign over my house and land – oops maybe I shouldn’t have let them know I own land. I cannot believe it’s taken 3 ½ weeks to get the check do cover “PART” not all of the repairs caused by their insured and now they do not think I deserve to get paid for the job I was doing when I was hit by their insured – I could have died their insured could have died and the person they were taking to therapy could have been killed, yet the human want to fight because she has no clue what it feels like to be hit by a Ambulance.Desired Settlement: I'd like my truck completely repaired and/or my loss income replaced without having to hire a lawyer.

BEWARE! I paid my policy premium for over 10 years to markel insurance and in that time I never submitted a claim. Juring super storm sandy I rode out the storm to protect my vessel. My 36 ft commercial fishing vessel sank in november 2013 and markel insurance sent their surveyor down to determine how it sank. After 3 inspections, Markel insurance stated that my vessel was " UNSEAWORTHY " before it sank, so my policy was "VOID" before my vessel sank. They based their denial of claim on the " UNSEAWORTHY " claus in my policy. Their surveyor found 2 rusted hose clamps in my bilge which they stated made my 36 foot commercial fishing vessel "UNSEAWORTHY". " SEAWORTHY " is a claus in the policy with a very vague defenition. Markel insurance never returned any of my calls. They only sent me e-mails. Markel insurance never truly determined how my vessel sank, as a matter of fact, markel insurance asked me how it sank. I documented everything that showed what their surveyor stated was suspect, but markel insurance still refused to honor my claim. Markel insurance did not deal with me in good faith. As of this writing I am out $ 45,000 due to loss of my vessel and I am liable for the hauling, storage and salvage of my vessel. Total loss to me is over $65,000. Replacement cost for what I lost will cost me over $75,000 to get back into business. Markel insurance refused to cover the cost to me of hauling, storage and salvage. It should be noted it took Markel Insurance 2 months and 3 inspection to deny my claim. As for getting a lawyer and suing them, I do not have the funds to replace what I lost and shell out $25,000 to a lawyer to fight for me. Markel Insurance is very aware of what it costs to fight them, they have lawyers on staff for just this reason. As of this writing my bills are growing and the hard ship I am going thru is very tough. I reported everything to the Revdex.com but they told me to get a lawyer. I am asking other state agencys, along with congresman and senators for help. I am not an educated man, most my life I have worked hard with hands and body. I will try to get someone to help me right this wrong that has been done to me. I am in the process to find a lawyer who will take my case on a contigency bases. Whatever the lawyer recovers we will split 50/50. I know in my heart what Markel Insurance did to me was wrong and they should be held responsible for all the costs related to the sinking of my vessel. They also should be held liable for the pain and suffering I am going thru. I wish I would of looked at Markel insurances record before I signed with them, I should of spoke to other commercial boat owners also. Most of the owners I spoke to after my vessel sank have [redacted] insurance. They all stated [redacted] insurance is a very good company. That is the company I will go thru if I ever get back into business again. I want to thank anyone who read this and please include me in your prayers, it is very tough for me and my family right now.

In the last 4 years my husband & I have had 3 policies with Markel, no complaints. So naturally when we bought our new boat I called them & took out boater insurance with a $50 down payment. The next day I decided to check with our auto/home carrier & they were significantly cheaper. I cancelled my policy with Markel at that moment, was informed I would receive a refund. I have yet to receive my refund, 21 days later. I contacted customer service, was told by the customer service supervisor I would not be receiving a refund. The director verified with underwriting I would not be receiving a refund due to their Minimum Earned Premium policy. As a customer I would only be entitled to what I paid over $100. The director also informed me they could "come after the other $50". Like I said this was our 4th policy to have with Markel and this information has never been shared. They have lost a good customer over $50!!

Review: Center had an uninsured motorist damage one of our vans on 11/28/2014. Shortly thereafter, once it was determined with a copy of the local Police report (December 1st) this claim was turned into

Markel Insurance for handling. As of December 8th, 2014 and despite us having to call and obtain the person's name and contact information at Markel working on this claim we have NOT heard from

Markel. The damaged van is vital to operations as a non-profit child care center providing service to low income families. Now we cannot use our van or even get our insurance company to contact

us. Very frustrating.Desired Settlement: Would like an immediate contact and fast track handling of this outstanding claim and the damages repaired. An apology for the lack of service and inability to return phone calls would not be amiss either.

Review: I had workmans comp insurance through this business. At renewal, I missed a payment so they cancelled my insurance. I called them to try to make the payment and they said it was too late and the policy had been cancelled and could not be renewed. A few months later I started receiving a bill for $266.00 for an audit. But my insurance was already cancelled and they were already done so I don't understand why I have to pay an audit fee. When I call them they cannot tell me what the charge is for. They had me fill out audit papers and I did that but I feel like they are charging me for fees after the policy was cancelled. Now the bill is in collection.Desired Settlement: I want the amount of $266 to be credited on my account and the collection to be cancelled.

Response:

Dear Ms. [redacted]: Please accept this response on behalf of

Markel Insurance Company in the above referenced matter. Markel Service,

Incorporated, (MSI) is the servicing entity for Markel Insurance Company. Duane

Signs secured workers compensation insurance through Markel Insurance Company

effective 1/16/14 under policy [redacted]. The policy was issued with an

estimated payroll of $40,000.00 and estimated annual premium of $1,102.00. The

premium for a workers compensation insurance policy is based off estimated

payroll and upon expiration the insured must submit payroll documents to

determine the final audited premium. A premium audit could result in a refund

or additional premium being owed depending on the outcome. The policy term for

[redacted] was set to expire on 1/16/15 and therefore, on 1/10/15 audit

paperwork was sent to the insured to complete and return to [redacted]. No audit

documents were returned and therefore, on 3/20/15 a noncompliant Audit

Explanatory Statement was sent to the insured indicating that the policy would

be endorsed as noncompliant if the completed audit documents were not returned.

No documents were returned and on 4/3/15 the policy was endorsed as noncompliant

with an estimated payroll of $50,000.00 and audited premium of $1293.00. On

10/13/15 the insured returned the completed audit documents and the audit was

completed and endorsed as compliant for policy [redacted]. The insured’s

completed audit paperwork indicated $50,000.00 in payroll; the same payroll

amount estimated on the noncompliant Audit Explanatory Statement. The audited

payroll only included the insured’s wages as the insured had elected to be

included (per his signed application) and did not have any employees. The final

audited premium was $1293.00. A billing statement was sent to the insured

regarding the additional premium in the amount of $191.00 however, no payments

have been received as today’s date. Subsequently, three late fees in the amount

of $25.00 each were assessed on the insured’s account. Policy [redacted]

currently has a balance of $266.00. On 12/22/14 a renewal offer was generated

and mailed to the insured for the 2015-2016 coverage period. The renewal quote

was never accepted and payment was not received. On 1/23/15 and 1/30/15

messages were sent to the agent informing them that no payment had been

received regarding the renewal offer. On 3/2/15 the agent sent a message asking

if the policy could be rewritten. The underwriter was unable to offer the

renewal as too much time had passed since the expiration of policy

[redacted]. No premium or additional charges were assessed regarding the

renewal policy as no renewal policy was ever issued for this insured. The Company

hopes this resolves any concerns and respectfully requests that this complaint

be dismissed. Thank you for your time in this matter. Sincerely, [redacted]

Review: I cannot get Markel Insurance to settle my claim despite providing all documentation they have requested.

Background:

I live in an apartment. On or about 7/7/2015 the apartment next door to mine caught fire. The carpeting in my apartment and my oriental rugs sustained water damage from the sprinkler system when water came through under the common wall. The apartment maintenance man helped me put my oriental rugs on the patio to help them dry. A restoration company came that night to dry out the carpeting in my apartment.

My rugs are thick and did not dry out quickly and began to smell terrible over the next week and draw mosquitoes.

After spending a substantial amount of time contacting the management company and my own insurance company for resolution, I sent the rugs to be professionally cleaned. Was finally able to make contact with Markel and file a claim and provided name of witness of rug damage. First claim got lost in their system. Had to file second claim. Insurance company requested photos of the rugs. I submitted the photos on Oct. 8th 2015. Despite ample time and repeatedly contacting Markel for resolution, they will not settle the claim.Desired Settlement: Pay the $401.00 owed.
