Dear Husband and I completed the "New Beginnings" weekend twelve years ago. Since that time we have sent 3-5 couples per year to Marriage Helper.

The New Beginning has since been upgraded to "Marriage Helper 911".

Unlike the other couples on our weekend, we were not having any particular relationship problems. However, we had the complications of husband's previous marriage/divorce history with my never-married history. We had been married for four years at the time.

I honestly recommend that every couple complete this seminar. And the earlier in the marriage the better.

The best way to describe what happened with us is that we were transformed from friends-with-benefits to a fully integrated, interdependent married couple. Neither of us gave up our own independence or identity while both of us melded into the other.

You will find research-based communication tools in the areas of intimacy, communication, sexology, theology, social psychology and recreation. You will learn skills to ask questions in a way that grows your privacy and friendship with your spouse, instead of accusing, alienating or putting your partner on a defensive tight-rope.

During and after that weekend, DH and I realised three mountainous, and I mean enormous, bucket-list goals that we did not even know existed!

My over-all favourite part of that weekend was completing our life-maps and then talking over using guided questions. When DH and I did this, we discovered several life-markers and life-goals that we had misunderstood. This one facet changed our geography and professions. It was a gigantic change..and not a direction that either of us had "agreed on" during pre-marriage counselling five years earlier. You could actually say that our entire career progression was altered after that weekend.

This weekend did not exactly "save our marriage" because we were not headed in a particularly disastrous trajectory. But it definitely did save our marriage in the sense that, even more than a decade later, we continue to have deep love and respect within the boundaries of our marriage.

By continuing to improve the patterns begun that weekend, we do not have any secrets. And therefore, we do not have any reputation with each other. All of our faults, epic fails, hopes, dreams, successes and inner fears are out in the open with each other. "Warts and All" as the Texans might say….and this has enabled us to secure our marriage with no blind spots.

As I said, that was more than a decade ago and Marriage Helper has abandoned, improved or replaced most of the content of that particular weekend. So if you attend MH911 today, you will get the evidence-based strategies. You absolutely will not regret investing in this 3-day game changer.

Attending Marriage Helper 911 was the turning point in our marriage. I truly believe without this ministry and [redacted]’s, we would be divorced. We learned tools to stop the crazy fighting. Until we learned this, we could not re-learn healthy communication. It has been a long process for us, but one that was well worth the time and effort.
