Review: [redacted] of Martin &Sons Roofing installed gutters and two down spouts on my detatched garage the gutters leak at the mitered corners (hip roof) and are not pitched to drain properly at the downspouts at rear of garage and so water sits in the gutter at the front of garage and can still drip days after a rain.I made them aware of the problem on10/21/2015 and again on 10/27/2015and asked that [redacted] call me but as of this day no response that's why im contacting you.I made payment in full on 10/08/2015.Desired Settlement: Correct the pitch on gutters so they drain properly and don't leak at mitered corners so they function properly. This is what I paid him for.

A gutter

installer friend of mine installed the gutters for me. He used a bubble level

to make sure they were pitched from front to the back where downspouts are

located on garages. He didn’t realize that the garage was not level. It was

actually slanted from the back of the structure to the front (ground not level

or built right or settled uneven). I went out

on Saturday November 7th after it rained day before that to see if

the mitered corners on the front were dripping. We rang bell and knocked on the

house door. Mr. [redacted] never answered or came out. We saw water was sitting

in the front gutter and around both corners going back from the front. The back

was dry meaning the water wasn’t completely draining to the back downspouts. We

scheduled to go back out on Monday to re-adjust the pitch better to get

positive drainage or water flow to the downspouts. We found out Monday Mr.

[redacted] sent a complaint to the Revdex.com that morning. I removed

the gutters and re-pitched them approximately 4” which just barely gave the gutters

a positive water flow to the downspouts. At that time, we realized that the

garage was built or settled on an opposite angle. We also installed aluminum

fascia cover up under the gutter apron and down over the back of gutter to help

prevent water going over the back of gutter when they fill with ice in the

winter months. I went back

out Thursday AM after last night’s rain storm and was happy to see the gutters

were dry from the front all the way to the two downspouts. This is the second

time in 43 years doing this work that we came across a garage that was pitched

to the front by quite a few inches. Normally the structures are built level and

the gutters only need a ½” total pitch. Mr. [redacted] said he mentioned the garage was

leaning to the front. It is hard to see with the naked eye. I always tell gutter installers to water flow

test the gutters and don’t just rely on the bubble level.

Review: When I removed the wood connecting my garage to my house, I noticed that the shingles on the north side were curled and aweful. They sent out an estimator, [redacted] , who said it was under warranty and will recommend they replace all shingles on north side.

I went to the office, the elderly lady there said she was telling the owner to write the work as a 'repair'. I also spoke to a girl with a name starting with the letterD. She said she found my 10 warranty card. I said good, I don't want a battle. She laughed and said no battle, you're covered.

But then the owner called me and said I should file an insurance claim. Claiming it was hail damage. I wrote him back that it sounded like insurance fraud to me. They nevetr came out, never honored their warranty, never repaired roof.

This was $6,500!Desired Settlement: Just fix my roof like 3 people in that office promised.

Response:

The roof is wearing normal. Edges and corners wear quicker than the field of a shinglebecause the side edge is exposed to weather - sun, heat, hail, snow and ice. Shinglegranules are piled over the hot tar and pressed by manufacture. Most of the granulespress to each other and not into the tar. These additional granules will fall off into thewrapped bundle package and gutters. Even walking on roof along with heavy rains, wind, and small hail will knock these additional piled up granules off shingles.Go to CTROOF.COM and look up "Homeowners Guide: The life Cycle Of Your Roof" ,liThe Hostile Roof Environment" , "What Will My Shingles Look Like As They Age?" foradditional information.See photos attached of her roof and also of a comparable roof (not hers). Notice hershingles in the photos look reaJly good, laying down nice, no blisters, no cracks, no curls, some granules loss (normal) .. The opinion of on Insurance company roof adjustor ispriceless. He or she knows normal wear with age or premature wear from hail. I noticedwhat looks like hail edge shingles which wears edges back opprOximately %" of noedge granules (normal also)LOOK at all 3-tab shingle roofs newer or older they never look as good as a 3-D shingleroof. For over 25 years our proposal text would ask homeowners not to use 3-tabshingles because they do not lay flat because roof boards are not flat and they couldcurl a little early on. 3-D shingles have a rough wood shake look and hide deviations inroof decks very well. The last few years, we don't even quote 3-tab shingles anymore. Most roofing contractors don't quote them either. Our proposal to her would clearly saywe don't recommend 3-tab shingles. The good news is her shingles look really good for their age.Sincerely,[redacted]

Response:

I told her you can see where hail hit the edge of some shingles and some granules fell off the edge. Insurance may let her make a claim. It's up to the insurance adjustor. Also, it's normal for granules to fall off the edge of the shingles as the asphalt dries up from the sun. Her shingles are in good shape (no different than any other roof including my own). See previous photos I supplied to see how nice they are.
