Before joining, member reached out to the company on 4/16/15, 4/20/15, and 4/23/15 requesting further information about enrolling in our program.

Member has also not reached out to administration to request any kind of refund - there was no contact with JMT before this case was submitted.

Member agreed to the following refund policy upon enrolling in the program, which is included in our terms of service.

5. Refund. Team Member understands that Team Member will be entitled to a refund of the Total Program Fee paid only if:
(a) Team Member completes all of courses contained in the Maxwell Training;
(b) Team Member believes that the Company has not met all of its obligations pursuant to the Commitment Form;
(c) Team Member attends the first full day of Team Member's Scheduled Live Event; and
(d) Team Member notifies the Company on or before the first day of Team Member's Scheduled Live Event of Team Member's request for a refund.
If the Total Program Fee paid by Team Member is refunded to Team Member, Team Member's license to use the Program Materials and to describe himself or herself as a John Maxwell Certified Coach, Teacher and Speaker will be automatically revoked. Except as provided above, the Total Program Fee or any portion paid thereof which has been paid is non-refundable. Any notices pursuant to this Section shall only be deemed to have been received by the Company if sent to and acknowledged back by the Program Administrator at ***@JohnMaxwellTeam.com.

Refund request policy that member agreed to outlines that refund requests must be submitted to ***@johnmaxwellteam.com. We have not received any refund requests from this member at that email address. Attached document outlines correspondence with program cooraintor regarding refund. Administration does not have access to program coordinators' email accounts, so if refund requests are not submitted by this policy, which is outlined in the terms and conditions, administration does not receive them at all.

I saved for 2 years to attend this $3,000 class ( not including flight, food and hotel). A lady sitting with me only had to pay $1,000 for the class.
After saving up my money for 2 years, I paid $3,000 just to attend this *** training and that does not include $568 airfare and $700 hotel bill to get to this class. I sat next to a lady who said she only had to pay $1,000 for the exact same class I was sitting in because it was a last minute special. I hated the entire training experience. It was not at all what was promised in the ad's and from the guy named *** who called me an excessive number of times to beg me to take the class. I felt like it was a "drink the kool-aid" type brainwashing seminar that was all keyed toward buying *** books and other propaganda. Everyday I would think, well tomorrow will be better but it never got any better. And there I sat next to the other lady who paid $2,000 less than me to attend. I am mad and very disturbed by the whole show.

Desired Outcome

I want my money back.

We have had several conversations with Mr. regarding her pricing and our pricing structure. She did pay $2997 which is the current price of our program. Ms. is upset that someone she met at our event did receive a price of $1000. From time to time we do offer special promotions, just as all businesses do. We will not be issuing her any type of refund and she has been told this. The *** Team has not violated any terms and conditions that she agreed to.

Request for Refund - No communication from *** Team.
Originally I was excited to join and participate in the *** Leadership course. However, shortly after I paid in full. My father passed *** Since then, I had to pay for many of the funeral costs along with traveling to help my mother sell her house. On top, I am not currently employed and I need the funds to help pay for expenses.

I've sent in 4 requests for a refund since July 26, 2019. No one has responded to any of my requests.

I contacted the original person from the *** team (*** - ***@***) for assistance. As of September 10, 2019 I have not heard back from anyone.

I am looking for a full refund as soon as possible.

Desired Outcome

I am looking for a full refund as soon as possible.

I was contacted on Sept 11, 2019 through email, by *** with an explanation of the policy. It stated that I needed to attend to the 1st day of the conference. I could not attend the conference because I was dealing with a death in the family and moving a family member into a new location. I sent a response to the email with a more detailed explanation. No response as of 12:00 PM on Sept 12, 2019.

I have received approval to offer you a refund outside of the Terms and Conditions.
You have paid $3497 towards your certification which you enrolled in on 6/18/19 and have had access to all resources.
When you agreed to the terms we invested in you. Our investment totals $800. I am able to offer you a refund of $2697.
If you agree to this refund, please reply I AGREE and I will start the refund process.
This offer will be filed with the *** in which you filed a complaint.

Customer Response • Sep 19, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)

I was told on July 19th that someone would contact me with information concerning a complete refund. No such contact or response to 2nd or 3rd attempt
I originally contacted the company seeking a discount from what I was told was a $7000 program. I was offered a $3500 program if I could come up with at least a $1000 down payment, which would make graduation quicker, based on monthly payments. Once the payments were made in full, I noticed that the graduation times would always be a conflict to my job. I requested the certificate be sent, at which point was told that the live event is mandatory to graduation. I thought that information should have been made clear before my $1000 payment. I was then told that the registration fee that was originally included in the package, was being forfeited because I cancelled my first live event. This would be an additional $495. I am simply asking for a full refund.

Desired Outcome

I think that a refund is completely fair.

Martinelli & Associates Response • Sep 12, 2019

We are working with Mr. outside of the agreed to Terms and Conditions that he signed when enrolling with the John Maxwell Team. I am confident that we will come to a resolution no later than 9/15. All of our members agree to our refund policy before enrolling so it should not be a surprise to them when we let them know that we are going to uphold our legal Terms and Conditions.

Customer Response • Sep 12, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I was prompted to send $1000 to lock into a specific cost without being informed of the refund policy or the mandatory (no exceptions) attendance of the graduation. I know what they think happens on each call, but those calls are not monitored or recorded to ensure quality.

Martinelli & Associates Response • Sep 18, 2019

I have been in communication with the member and we have agreed to allow him to remotely become certified even though our terms state that you must attend a live event to finalize certification. This case should be closed as we work with this member who will be receiving his JMT certification outside of the agreed to Terms and Conditions.

I reached out to cancel my registration and was notified that I cannot received a refund unless I attend the first day and complete online courses.
I reached out to cancel my registration and was notified that I cannot received a refund unless I attend the first day and complete online courses. I am unable to attend at all because I have spasmodic dysphonia, which doesn't allow me to speak clearly or any words to come out. Instead of losing my job as a 911 supervisor, I am being reassigned and with a huge pay cut. It was the only choice I had to keep my insurance and home. Right now, I can barely make my mortgage, bills, and medical bills. And, my partner has lost his job and stricken with family health issues. My surgery will leave me unable to talk for a while and taking the JMT program is out of the question due to my medical condition and long recovery. I hope you can re-consider your terms and agreement.

Desired Outcome

I am requesting a full refund of my fees and down payment, please.

Martinelli & Associates Response • Jul 25, 2019

I have received approval to offer *** a refund of $1578.97 and waive the requirement to attend. When *** enrolled in the program he was aware of the refund policy. I'm adding information to this complaint to seek additional assistance regarding the original complaint I filed back in July. As of this date, Wednesday, August 28, I have not received a refund from the John Maxwell Team. I received an email from a *** Smith of JMT on August 8, 2019 advising they mailed a check a week prior and would place another check in the mail. I responded to her on August 12, confirming I still had not received it. On August 13, Ms. Smith reiterated by email again that another check would be sent by Friday, August 16. I still have not received anything from their office by mail and emailed Ms Smith again 2 days ago (August 26) to inquire on the status; however, am no longer receiving any reply - nor was I given any phone numbers to try and follow up by phone. I would appreciate any other assistance Revdex.com can provide in this matter. Best regards

In order to get a refund, there are loopholes
I have been almost 3K to John Maxwell to attend a conference but unfortunately, I will not be able to attend. I emailed them notifying of the cancellation and refund and 10 days later, I get an email that states that in order to get the refund, I have to complete all their assignments and attend day 1 of the conference. Why would I have to fly and stay at a hotel to get my money back.

Desired Outcome

I want all my money back that I spent with them.

Martinelli & Associates Response • Jun 24, 2019

I have attached the Terms and Conditions that *** agreed to when he joined the John Maxwell Team. We do have a 100% Money Back Guarantee Policy, section 5. *** can receive a full refund by attending day 1 of the live event he enrolled for - August 2019. We are obligated to withhold the Terms and Conditions that our members are aware of before we even enroll them or process their payment.

Customer Response • Jul 02, 2019

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
I understand about the disclosure but I am not financially able to fly to Orlando and pay for the hotel. Losing my job has not been easy and paying off my credit card makes the situation worse. And now, my family has to come together with money so we can find a nursing home for our dad, which I have had to cash out my 401K to help pay for this transition. I cannot simply afford any of this right now and getting the money back is not even for me but for my credit card as I am only able to pay the minimum balance every month but does not help because of interest rate. Your consideration is much appreciated.

Customer Response • Jul 10, 2019

I will accept the refund amount of $1478.976.

Thank you for your consideration.

Martinelli & Associates Response • Jul 11, 2019

Refund check will be mailed to *** within 10 business days.

The company engages in deceptive practices to encourage people to sign up and then uses cult-like behaviors to keep people paying and on the team.
I spoke with representative Angela Hooper Menifield on multiple occasions between Sept 24 and Oct 30,2018 about the program but indicated I wasn't ready to sign up yet. She told me that the "deal" of a a $3000 "scholarship" towards their $6997 fee and a free hotel/meals/seminar was only good if I acted right away, today, the first time I talked to her. After that, she would text me often and tell me she was thinking about me, and that she was specially holding this offer open for me because she felt like I belonged on her team and she just knew I was her kind of person. She made me feel like she was my friend somehow. On Oct 30th, I signed up for the program even though I had misgivings because I was afraid I would miss a big opportunity. I asked about their refund policy multiple times in our conversations and Angela told me that I could go through the whole program, go to Florida, stay in the hotel on JMT, eat food JMT paid for, and THEN if I still wanted a refund, I could have one in full. Angela never disclosed to me that I would be forced by the contract to participate in weekly calls, pay in full, come to Florida for the seminar, and only then could I qualify for a refund. Not knowing this, I submitted a request for a refund for my money on Nov 12th and someone responded that they were forwarding my email on to the financial dept for review. No one from the financial dept ever contacted me. However, I received a curt email from Angela shortly after, telling me that it was too bad that I didn't understand what I signed up for, and since I hadn't given them a try, I wasn't entitled to a refund yet. She reiterated everything she said about the trip, hotel and food, but this time changed her language so I understood I was forced to come to the seminar if I want a refund. Please note you can only attend the seminar after you have paid in full AND paid for airline tickets to the event. They are only held in March and August every year. I also suddenly started receiving phone calls and emails from another JMT Executive Director that had a sudden interest in checking on me to see if I needed anything, he said he just wanted to make sure I was getting off to a good start. I had zero contact until I asked to leave the program. I feel like this is a cult-like tactic of bullying people into staying in the program. I would be extremely fearful to go to Florida and stay in a hotel teaming with JMT people and try to ask for my money back. They need to be upfront with this contract requirement and spell it out before people sign up. This business masquerades as a Christian business, but in my opinion, their tactics of hanging on to people who don't want to be in their program and bullying them are cult-like in nature. I tried resolving this first by contacting them, and then second by filing a credit card dispute, but it's been a month since my original inquiries and I have heard nothing.

Desired Outcome

I would like a refund of my initial downpayment of $1030 and to be released from any further payments or contractual requirements. I would like no further contact whether via email, text/telephone or facebook, or any other method from JMT members, representatives, or anyone even remotely connected with this business.

Martinelli & Associates Response • Jan 06, 2019

To whom it may concern,

As a part of an ongoing conversation with a program coordinator *** of his own free will made a specific choice to seek to become a member of The John Maxwell Team. After choosing to become a member of The John Maxwell Team *** was presented with the terms and conditions for joining The John Maxwell Team where it was required to read and express through a digital signature that *** agreed with these terms and conditions. Only after the Terms and conditions had been read and digitally signed expressing understanding and agreement with said terms and conditions an opportunity for payment is then given.

These terms and conditions express a specific refund policy that *** is legally bound to but giving the desire to not be a member of The John Maxwell Team the operations team of The John Maxwell Team has decided to extend a partial refund in the amount of $440 to ***. The refund is partial due to amount of investment that has already be placed in *** onboarding with The John Maxwell Team. If partial refund is agreed upon by *** then a formal legal document will be email that will require a signature and then a check will be cut and mailed to *** Andrew within 10 days.

If Darcey *** agrees to this partial refund in the amount $440 the agreement can be communicated both through the Revdex.com response or by emailing ***@johnmaxwellteam.com

Customer Response • Jan 22, 2019

Thank you for your offer to settle at $440.

I work in an industry, where not only honesty but ethics and integrity are paramount. Justice Potter Stewart once said, "Ethics is knowing the difference between what you have the right to do and what is the right thing to do." I did sign up on my own free will. However, texts and emails from your representative, Angela Hooper Menifield, telling me she was "thinking of me and praying for me" in order to recruit me might be what we would call "twisting" in my business, which is not legal in my state, and certainly not ethical. I felt uneasy about committing the money, and told her I didn't want to start until January. She told me multiple times how I could go through the whole program and come to the seminar and get my money back. She never explained that I HAD to do so or I would not have signed up. I signed up on Oct 30th, late at night. I regret not reading the contract first, but due to my conversations with Ms. Menfield, I trusted that I had recourse and I was anxious to not lose out on the "deal". I was busy for a few days, finally had the time to look at your website and content and immediately felt like I had made the wrong decision. Ten days after originally signing up, I contacted you for a refund. You have made me wait months for a response. You enjoyed your Thanksgiving and Christmas while I worried and wondered what would become of the money that I now feel like I have thrown away.

I'm asking you to do the right thing, the Christian thing, as that's the type of business you purport to be. I'm asking you to decide if what you have a right to do, is the right thing to do. I'm asking you to take a look at how you get people to sign up for your business. I'm asking you to change your approach because you don't make the lives better for every single person you sign up. When you force people to fight you over their money or stay in the group against their will, sometimes you ruin them. Your contract is cult-like. "Come beg in person for a refund and release from our group. You'll love us so much you'll never want to leave us." Why do you want to force people to be in a group they don't want to be in? The least you can do from this experience is to clear up your sales and recruiting methods and be more forthcoming that people that sign up will never see their money again. Honestly, I had to read your contract several times to even understand the refund policy. I've never seen anything this strange before. It would have been better to have been told it was nonrefundable, then I would not have signed up until I was sure.

I'll pass *** the offer of $440 to resolve my dispute. I'm certain your "significant onboarding fees" is the fee you paid to Ms. Menified for me. I would like a full refund of my deposit, or I'll be glad to hold onto the right to exercise my option to use it as a deposit and come back into your program at my convenience as Ms. Menifield told me I could in her last email. I do appreciate that you finally responded to my Revdex.com complaint. Since you did not bother to respond to my original emails sent to you beginning in early November, right after I signed up, I was forced to seek outside help. I am not a person to start this sort of dispute. We could have avoided this if you would have just had a human being talk to me, and had behaved ethically from the start.

Eneida,

Thank you so much! I did get a full refund from this company on 2/15/2019. I am so appreciative of the service that you provide. I am quite sure this would not have happened without help from the Revdex.com. Thank you so much for everything that you do. I hope you have a blessed weekend. I really appreciate you. Thank you so much for your follow up.

Company failed to deliver what it promised.
Company fails to provide informed consent before charging clients.

The company does not inform clients of what is expected of them before charging them. An individual had a right to be informed before joining something before paying for it. This is called "Informed Consent" in which all expectations are to be laid out in writing before anyone proceeds forward. Due to the name of John Maxwell, it is an easy sell as well as the fact that they advertise Christian principles which further encourages people to pay without being informed. I was told by the salesperson that "John rewards quick action." Yet they do nothing of the same towards their clients once the money is taken from your account.
After payment, client is left on their own to manage their way through a monstrous maze of material on the webpage. Client is then contacted to ask if they have joined the mentorship program and then led to feel as if they are less than for not being in the mentorship program. Later client is told to attend seminar, then told to join mentorship program, pay additional charges, purchase additional trainings. Once on the webpage, you discover all kinds of additional charges that you will be charged each and every year, told that you must complete most of the courses before advertising as a member of the JMTeam, etc., Of course, if you pay additional charges and additional fees, (levels), you will have access to even more that the other underlings do not have access too. Fees charged for monthly payments are enormous and excessive and I question their legality of charging such high fees. This is certainly not consistent with Biblical principals of stewardship.
I have repeatedly tried to solve this problem with them only to be told that I would have to attend the seminar in Florida to get my refund. I informed them that I would not be attending the seminar and thus incurring any more additional expenses with this organization. I was then told that there would be no refund.
As Christians, we are told not to take one another to court. After reading the complaints on the Revdex.com website with this organization and reading that they wished that those individuals had first contacted them before filing the complaint, I did just that. The problem has not been solved.
Had I been properly informed of all that what expected of me before hand I would not have joined this organization.
I wish to have a refund in the amount of $3,997.00. I am asking for this to be done immediately without anymore demands being made on me regarding this matter.
As a Christian, I am pursing this complaint before going forward with a lawsuit.

Desired Outcome

I am desiring a refund as soon as possible without any expectations that I incur any additional expenses or make any trips to Florida to pick up a check. When they debited the money from my bank account, I did not ask them to come to Virginia in order to collect my money and I would expect the same courtesy from them.

Martinelli & Associates Response • Sep 05, 2018

To whom it may concern,

On May 15, 2018 *** reached out to the John Maxwell Team for the opportunity to join our team of 20,000 plus certified coaches, speakers, and trainers from around the world. On May 18, 2018 *** received a digital copy of the new member agreement for individuals wishing to become members of The John Maxwell Team. This agreement outlines what it means to be a certified member and gives the full disclosure of the details for that certified membership, guidelines for our coaches, speakers, and trainers and in reference to this complaint it also provides in detail the requirements for receiving a full refund for program fees. *** received this new member agreement prior to joining the John Maxwell Team and prior to paying the program fees. *** was encouraged to read the new member agreement in full and then to digitally sign the new member agreement indicating that he read the document in full and understood the stated requirements for participating in the certification program. On May 18, 2018 *** digitally signed and submitted his new member agreement indicating that he fully understood this binding agreement. After *** digitally signed the new member agreement he then was give a self pay portal where he was required to initiate the payment of the program fees himself. The financial department of the John Maxwell Team does not facilitate this initial payment for the potential new member as to leave all final decisions for participation in the John Maxwell Team Certification program up to the individual seeking to be certified as a coach, speaker, trainer. *** Initiated his payment himself without aid on May 18, 2018.

However, even with this binding legal document in place, upon request, *** was offered a full refund by The John Maxwell Team and asked to follow the standard refund process laid out in detail in the new member agreement that *** signed on May 18, 2018. By email on July 19th & July 25th of 2018 *** informed the John Maxwell Team that he did not wish to follow the refund policy as stated in the new member agreement that he signed on May 18, 2018. *** was informed by email reply on July 19, 2018 and July 28, 2018 that a full refund would be granted to him but he would need to follow the stated refund process. In addition he was provided by email on July 28, 2018 a digital copy of the new member agreement that he signed which includes a stated refund policy. Since *** refused to follow the stated refund policy in the time frame that was provided for him in his agreement he is now no longer eligible for a full refund for the program fees. However, as a paid in full member of the John Maxwell Team, he still has life-time access to the online platform and it's content given that he adheres to the code of conduct required to be considered as a Certified John Maxwell Team coach, speaker, and trainer. As will all of our John Maxwell Team members *** is encouraged to contact the administrative team (***@johnmaxwellteam.com) at any time if he is needing help or guidance with how to implement the trainings, resources, or materials in either his personal growth and development or in his developing business as a coach, speaker, and trainer.

In addition to this rebuttal I have submitted a copy of *** new member agreement & email correspondences with dates and time stamps validating our response from the John Maxwell Team.

See the attached file.

Customer Response • Oct 23, 2018

To Whom It May Concern:

My initial complaint stands and has not been adequately addressed in response to my complaints. Additional complaints from other consumers on the Revdex.com website would further document the failure of the company to deliver on their promises: 01/31/2017; 10/05/2016; 09/08/2016; 09/30/2016 and 04/08/2016.

I was charged $3,997.00 for services that would assist me in becoming a public speaker. While I did receive two initial phone calls on May 22nd and May 23rd, these calls were brief calls to familiarize one with their web site and lasted only 15 minutes at best. When I signed up for their program, I did not sign up for two brief telephone calls, I signed up to become a speaker, a coach, and a trainer in the field of leadership.

My initial complaint stands: The john Maxwell Team has:

1) Failed to properly inform their perspective members beforehand of what they are getting
into before charging them for their services. This services is called Informed Consent and
should have been done, item by item, line by line by the individual making the initial phone
call before receiving payment for services. One cannot consent to what one is not aware
of. Only upon reading and discussing with both parties aloud, should on proceed forward
with accepting payment. This did not occur in spite of comments about time stamp.

2). John Maxwell team fails to provide a list of charges for their services. Therefore, one is left
in doubt when one is paying for services. A *** has a right to be fully informed of what
they are paying for ahead of time. Imagine my surprise when I saw online that others had
$3,000.00 for the same services!

3). To date, I have received two phone calls (initial brief phone calls in order to get me started).
I did not pay $3,997.00 for two phone calls. I paid to become trained in how to become a
speaker, a coach, a trainer, in the field of leadership. Two brief phone calls does not
prepare one to become a speaker, a coach, or a trainer in the field of leadership.

4). After payment, I was left on their own to manage my way through a monstrous maze of
material on the webpage. While there is a plethora of information on their web page, the
sheer volume of the material makes it an impossible maze to sort through, without
consuming the same amount of time for the individual. The most valuable asset we all have
is our time and one does not have time to spend the amount of time that it would take to
do that.

5). What I did receive was phone calls, and messages, and emails all encouraging me to spend
more money: mentorship programs, additional trainings at the seminar, additional yearly
charges, photographs for sale, notebooks for sale, etc., etc., etc. I did not sign up for daily
multi-level marketing and sales calls to charge me additional money.

6). The JMT's team requirement that I attend their Seminar in Florida to receive my refund put
undue pressure on me and would have created an unnecessary additional financial
burden. This is not a "win-win" solution to a problem. This response fails to exercise
leadership in that it is a "win-lose" response that causes harm to the other party. As John
Maxell says in an article on leadership "Harm the person: The worst of all responses is to try
to punish or harm the person who doesn't like us. That causes us to lose integrity."

My initial claim still stands that the John Maxwell Team has failed to deliver on their promises to assist me in becoming a speaker, a coach, and a trainer in the field of leadership. As such, it is still my request that I be refunded my $3, 997.00 in full without penalty or delay. Due to their failure to adequately address this initial claim and to model leadership in being a good problem solver, and to offer fair problem solving solutions, I have no desire to seek further training from the John Maxwell Team. Please refund me my money as soon as possible.

Sincerely

Martinelli & Associates Response • Nov 13, 2018

Since this case has been reopened again I want to ask that the agent in charge of reviewing this was PLEASE take the opportunity to read and review these three documents referenced.

1. Read & Review the email thread submitted & note the times stamps on the email

2. Read and Review the terms of agreement located in the email thread & the signature time stamp indicated when Mr *** greened tot the terms of agreement.

3. Read and review in details of the original rebuttal provided.

These three items provide the Revdex.com with a detailed timeline and legal documentation that would hold up in court proving that Mr. Reeses claims to be false. Further more they also prove Mr. negligence in following the agreed upon procedure for receiving a refund when it was available to him if he has of followed the agreed upon procedure.

Here is the original rebuttal....................
