Marvin Mews & Sons Reviews (4)

[redacted] misinterpreted my offer. At the end of my response to him that offer was to send my men and topsoil to  remedy his yard grade no charge. Previously it was offered for cost of men's per hour pay.  [redacted] would have landscaping responsibilities regardless of the new patio as backfilling is not included and he had just dirt without grass in a large area directly behind his house and offset of the patio.  I'm offering to remedy his grade no charge to help this situation . Thank you, [redacted].Tell us why here...

Tell us why here...In response to [redacted]'s complaint. [redacted] was home from work that day to supervise his project Friday July 15th.[redacted] changed and added things multiple times. The price, which was pro-rated for the additional work was too costly for him so I gave him discounted prices on his...

changes.  [redacted] added a walk, shed slab & patio increased area. During set up [redacted] told us what he wanted and was with me when I was setting the grades. I showed [redacted] the steps out of his house to the patio and the patio to the lawn. [redacted] said it was fine. I mentioned to [redacted] he would need some fill to bring his low lawn up for the pitch drainage. He agreed.[redacted] told me he had water draining down his basement wall and had someone grade that area out but they did it wrong. That area is a flat spot and needs fill to drain away from the house. The two wooden steps removed by [redacted] were temporary and of an uneven naturewith the bottom step at ground level. [redacted] mentioned in his complaint that one step was cheaper and easier for me, on the contrary as itwas cheaper for [redacted] if he didn't want more steps and work done to lower everything and have a water problem. I never lied to [redacted] about anything and especially the step code.We know the code is nothing over 8" steps but we make 7 to 7.5" steps so if there were any settling the steps would still be to code. If [redacted] wanted more steps and a lower patiohe could have easily said so when I showed him the grades and form heights. He in turn would have water drainage problems and have to re landscape his lawn by excavating not just addingtopsoil which is much cheaper.  [redacted] had the whole weekend to change the form work as we didn't pour until Monday July 18 and it was ready Friday. In fact [redacted] sent some changes of an area he wanted bigger and radiuses. He said other than those small changes everything looks great. I have his text to me Sunday July 17 at 4:20PM which reads,"Hello [redacted], everything looks great. Wanted to be sure all corners are rounded. Thanks again!!"   Then Sunday at 6:44PM he sent two pictures of the job that he had made more changes. One was to increase the walk area and another to put a raduis cornerin. No mention of grade changes even though he meticulously looked over the form work for 3 days making small changes back and forth.  After it was poured [redacted] then decided it would be too much topsoil for him. He mentioned my brother quoted him a price to landscape at $1500.00.He failed to mention that was with mulch, topsoil, seed and to also back fill the concrete driveway. [redacted] was upset with having to fill  his lawn so I tried to help his costs by again giving him yet another discount of $180.00 of extras to go towards topsoil and offered him twomen that he could pay $20 per hour each to grade out his lawn. Which would have have took approx 4 to 5 hours. One quad-axle dump truck load would be enough fill. I never said multiple truckloads is normal as every job is different depending on pitch. The concrete quality is fine and we cleaned the concrete splatter off the siding.  I don't appreciate being called a liar and a scam artist. Every detail was explained and gone over meticulously with [redacted] prior to, during and after the work was completed. This company has been in business since 1953 and has an A Plus rating with the Revdex.com with only one complaint in over 14 years. This hardly makes for a scam artist. We have also received a vast amount of referrals and repeat business over our 60 plus years in business. To show no hard feelings my offer to send two men to grade out the topsoil to give [redacted]s lawn proper grade still stands. Thank You, [redacted].

Review: During June of this year, I had my driveway ,sidewalk, and back patio replaced. Immediately there were bands or stripes visible. I mentioned that and was told that the concrete needed to cure. I called 3 times in September and only one call was returned. I was told that the bands were present because it rained that day and a plastic cover had to be used. It did not rain much or hard that day and a plastic cover was not used over the entire areas involved. No one returned either of my other calls and no one has looked at my driveway or patio. There are multiple bands visible and the worst is the one visible on my patio. The stripe is much lighter in color than the rest of the patio. The stripe is 4 inches wide and 7 feet and 7 inches long. The entire project does not look like it was professionally done and the wide stripe on the patio detracts from the value of my house. The same day and same time a neighbor's driveway was replaced and it looks like I expected mine to turn out-no bands or stripes visible. There is ,also, damage from something that was sprayed on one corner of my house on the vinyl siding.Desired Settlement: The problem needs to be solved so that the concrete work done by Marv Mews and Sons matches in quality the sidewalk areas that were replaced in November ,2012 by another concrete company. And I want the spray residue removed from the siding on my house. It is probably the sealer that was used on the concrete.

Consumer

Response:

I have not had anyone come to my house or do anything to solve my problem. The damage to my siding has not been repaired.

Business

Response:

Company states that they have been working towards resolving the issues.

We just completed a large stamped concrete project with [redacted] and Sons incorporating a 33' x 18' patio and 25' x 4' walk. I dealt directly with [redacted] who is one of the owners and is President of the company.
I received a recommendation from my neighbor who built their home 23 years ago and used [redacted] and Sons back then to install their driveway. 23 years later, their driveway still looks brand new. No cracking or settling whatsoever. I asked them who installed their driveway back then and they told me Marvin Mews and Sons. They still had the original paperwork for the driveway. If a driveway holds up after that many years, I want to do business with a quality contractor like that. We are going on our third driveway in 25 years. I had received two estimates for the stamped concrete job. Mews came in at the same price as the other quote but after meeting [redacted] there was no question as to who I was going to go with. He is honest, up front and his integrity is unwavering. I totally felt at ease dealing with [redacted] and his company. They are a family owned and operated business which means a lot to me. They take pride in their workmanship and are looking out for your interests first. They didn't nickel and dime us on every little thing either. They have been in business for 60 years so they have the most experience in their field.
The project: Our project turned out beautiful! Stamped concrete is a very time consuming labor intensive job. They were at our house every morning on the job working by 7:30 am. One day they didn't leave until 7:00 pm because they wanted to get everything done for the day so the next day they were ready to start a new segment of the project.
Overall, we couldn't be happier with the results of our stamped concrete patio and walk and with [redacted] and his team. We would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Marvin Mews and Sons for any concrete work you need. They truly are a professional business who excel at their craft. Thank you [redacted] and the whole team at Marvin Mews and Sons for a terrific job, well
done!! We will be referring as many people to your company as you have earned our respect. By the way, [redacted] will be coming back in the spring to install our new concrete driveway, which will be our last!
