Customer [redacted] contacted me regarding repair of his [redacted].  He needed a valve cover replaced.  He wanted this done by [redacted] the time that he got off work.  Once I arrived, I explained clearly to **. [redacted] that there was a possibly that his computer would need to be reprogrammed by the dealership and he needed to save his radio codes because I was going to disconnect the battery (that year [redacted] many times need this when the battery is disconnected). I also pointed out different bolts that were missing on his car.  **. [redacted] said that he knew about this and agreed to move forward. Once the repair had been completed, the vehicle had a rough idle, which historically indicates that it need reprogramming.  I connected a [redacted] to read the computers codes and they were inaccurate but would not allow me to reset them.  By this time **. [redacted] had gotten off work and placed items in the trunk of his car.  I explained the rough idle and the [redacted] readings.  He appeared to be very impatient and concerned, which was understandable. I told him that I would return the next morning and perform minor adjustments and see if I could think of a way where he would not have to have the computer reprogrammed.  He asked if the car was driveable and I rreplied yes.  I then instructed my assistant to drive the vehicle around the parking lot so I could be sure.  I then drove the vehicle myself on the frontage road around parallel to the freeway and reached up to 60mph to double check.  The rough idle was apparent only when I came to a stop.  I returned and informed **. [redacted] that it was ok to drive home and the we both agreed that I would return the next morning so I could perform adjustments e.t.c.  Once he left, I waited for about 20 minutes and called him on his cell phone to check on him.  He stated that the car stalled twice but started right back up (his voice reflected concern but at no time did he say that he was concerned enough that he was traveling to another shop during our telephone conversation).  I felt that everything was o.k., so I told him that I will see him in the morning and he acknowledged.  When I got back to my office, Before I arrived back at my office he sent me a text, with pics, and said that he was at a shop and they said some bolts were missing, some tape have fallen off a hose, a ground wire had been improperly connected and the computer may need reprogrammed.  I replied that the bolts, and hose were pre-existing; the ground wire was an incorrect diagnoses, and that I had already explained that his computer may need reprogrammed; however I again reiterated that I would perform minor adjustments, try tp correct the bolt issue (even though I have pointed it out in the beginning) and think of a way to prevent the necessity to reprogram at no cost to him.  The next morning, because I set out to go to his location to perform what I had promised, I sent him an email and ask him if he still wanted me to go to him the next day (I asked because of the tone of the text he had sent).  He replied no and said he spend money at the shop on his car and asked for a refund.  I replied that it was not necessary to spend additional money and that no refund was warranted because he chose to go to a different shop.  Below is a copy of the emails:

Because of the text messages that
I received yesterday, I felt compelled to ask if you still want us to revisit
your [redacted] this morning, or if you have made other arrangements.  Please
advise so I can make my schedule.
**. [redacted] reply:
**. [redacted], No further
appointments will be necessary, enough damage has been done. My car shut off
several times on the way home so I decided to take it to [redacted]
[redacted]  due to the car performance. Upon arrival we opened the hood
and he pointed out several critical parts that were incorrect.
1. major ground bolt
serving CPU was loose could remove with hand and could have shorted out
computer
2. spark plugs were not
seated at required specs
3. ccv hose broke off
and part taped with black electrical tape
4. vehicle has to be
reprogrammed

We took pictures and
video of the damage. To get this fixed I was billed [redacted] attached is the
invoice.
For this reason I am
asking for a full refund. if not please feel free to dispute".
My Reply back to him:
"No major grounds that led to the computer were taken off, nor
installed by us.  The black wrapping (tape) on the ccv hose was already
there but intact, I checked it myself when I went back over it because of my
concerns.  Spark plugs 1 – 5 were double checked, but I planned to go back
over all 6 myself this morning (including bolt that was broken I was going to
retap even though it was already broken when we arrived).

I wasn’t present to know what, or did not happen at the shop;
but those are minor adjustments that could have been done by us easily, with
the exception of reprograming which I personally shared with you might be
necessary before work began, but as I also shared, I would have attempted to
reset the computer so you wouldn’t have to go through the expense.  You
personally chose not to have us go back over it, even though you agreed
to.  Our warranty on labor requires that we have the opportunity to
correct any issues (that we are directly responsible for during work
performed).  If we are unable, or cannot, then we would absorb any expense
incurred by the customer.  We were denied this opportunity by you;
therefore, no refund is warranted and cannot be given, nor the cost of the
repair can be honored because that was your personal choice and was completely
unnecessary.  Below if my mailing address should you decide to seek other
avenues:
 [redacted]
[redacted]
[redacted]
Any correspondence and/or certified letters will be responded to
immediately."

CONCLUSION:  While I definitely understand **. [redacted] concerns, he took it upon himself to go to a shop who, may or may not have, embellished on what was needed to secure his business.  I was more than willing to perform additional work at absolutely no cost to him.
