I, ***, am writing this letter to notify you of a known beg bug infestation at my job Mattis Pointe Senior Living- Assisted Living and Memory Care ***. I suspect our facility to be infested, for our residents and employees are experiencing bites, stings, irritations or lines of bumps caused by these bugs. A resident within the ALF (Assisted Living Facility) community recently was discovered to have a infestation on their recliner chair and bordering chairs in living area. The DON *** notified the recliner was thrown out but the residents received new furniture and the entire building was not treated for. The resident has reported complaints of Rollie Pollies in her recliner since June of 2019, signifying the bed bugs and bites were mistaken for rashes and began an overgrowth and that overgrowth is spreading through the community.
According to Senate Bill 846, It is my responsibility to report any negligence within my community to report to Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services if the community does not act upon this issue within 7-14 days. The first notification and concern was expressed on January 29, 2020 to administrator *** and it is now February 11, 2020, and this time I have caught the bug and placed it in a bag for it to be viewed. I feel it is important and the communities responsibility to provide services to the employees and the residents living at the community, for it raises health and mental illness concerns.
I have missed nights of work due to this issue. Its becoming more of a concern and a health issue. This is not only an issue for employees but residents as well, for the residents within the community have experience with Alzheimer's disease and with this infestation this could result in residential low iron deficiency and anemia. On January 17, 2020 resident reported to have bugs in room. Maintenance checked room and discovered what appeared to be bed bugs on their personal bed and chairs in their room. Administrator was notified as well as Operations Director. Exterminator was called immediately. Residents were showered in separate area with heat treated clean bug free clothing. Residents were relocated to stay with family from January 17, 2020 through January 20, 2020. All clothing, bedding and linens were removed from room in trash bags and secured. All items were laundered according to protocol. Resident room was locked to prevent re-entry. The exterminator arrived on site on Jan u a r y 17, 2020. An initial treatment was performed. Common Living Room was inspected and no signs of bed bugs were reported. Rooms adjacent to affected areas were inspected and no areas were affected. Exterminator returned on J a n u a r y 18, 2020 for further treatment. Some furniture items were disposed of per resident wishes. These items were wrapped in cellophane and taken to the dumpster. Mattresses and box springs are encased with bed bug covers. On January 26, 2020, family member reported seeing bed bug in their loved ones room. Tha same above protocol was followed. Exterminator arrived on site on January 27, 2020 and treatment was performed. On January 29, 2020, an employee reported seeing a bug in the common living room on a recliner. Another staff member said they were bit by something. Exterminator was contacted and an inspection was performed on all furniture in the common living room. No signs of bed bugs were reported. On February 11, 2020, an employee reported seeing bug in same area. Exterminator was called again to inspect area. Common area was treated by exterminator. No further reports have been made. Frequent checks continue to be made by housekeeping during routine cleaning.
