Review: On August 21, 2013 I put a $200 mattress set on layaway with $20 down. On August 23, 2013 I paid the remaining balance of $180. I don't own a vehicle so I told [redacted], which is the store owner, I would pick it up on August 31, 2013. [redacted] said I can pick up the mattress set any day whatsoever in my convenience. I rented a [redacted] pick-up truck on August 31, 2013 to pick up the mattress and to also move into my new apartment. When I arrived to pick up the mattress set [redacted] told me that my mattress had been sold to another customer after it was paid in full and sold to me. He then insisted on selling me another mattress set in the store for $20 more. This was very unbelievable to me and I was dissatisfied with the service I was given. I asked for my money back but he refused to give it to me. I then called the police and when the police got there he told them that I had already picked up the mattress set and that I was there trying to get a second mattress set...Desired Settlement: I would just like a refund of the $200 that I paid for a mattress set that I never recieved.

Purchased a sofa that smells of formaldehyde. Store will not take it back. I was told deal with the manufacture. I can't use the sofa - it smells. I purchased a defective loveseat (small sofa) in the Mattress Outlet store on January 26, 2014. Purchase: January 26, 2014. Payment Method - Credit Card. Payment date: Jan 27th. Payment Amount: $474.81. Paid to: Mattress Outlet. Model: Ashley #XXXXXXX Loveseat. Delivery date: Jan. 27th, Problem date: Jan 27th.The sofa was delivered on Monday Jan. 27th. That evening the sofa had a distinct chemical smell, I thought it just needed to 'air-out'. After a week of 'airing-out' the sofa still smelled. It smells like 'formaldehyde' and 'particle board glue'. The formaldehyde smell emanates or dissipates from the sofa; the smell gets stronger if the sofa is uncovered. I keep the sofa complete covered in plastic; I am unable to use the sofa. I've returned to Mattress Outlet store 3 times (Feb. 1, Feb. 3, and Feb. 6, 2014) in an attempt to return the sofa and obtain a refund. Feb.1, 2014: One week after purchase and delivery I returned to the store to have the sofa returned. I was told, by the sale representative to put open bowls of baking soda on the sofa to absorb the smell! Feb. 3: I again returned to the store and the sale representative said his boss was out and he couldn't do anything until his boss returned from vacation. He also offered a replacement item but I don't want a replacement item. I don't want a replacement item that will have the same defective problem - chemical smell. Feb. 6: I again returned to the store to have the sofa returned and obtain a refund. The sale representative said his boss still was not back at work but he would put me on the schedule to the have the sofa picked-up at my home. But he didn't know about the exact refund. He scheduled the pick-up for Monday February 10, 2014.Feb. 10: Two delivery men arrived at my home for what I thought was a pick-up of the sofa. But one of the men said they were here to smell the sofa. The two men enter my home and I asked the 'leader' if his name was [redacted] and he said no it was [redacted] was combative and defensive from the beginning; he hesitated to give me his name. Gary had already make-up his mind he was not going to take the sofa back, even before looking at the sofa. (I believe [redacted] is the owner of Mattress Outlet, based on the fact that he had the authority to take back the sofa.)[redacted] the owner of Mattress Outlet pulled the plastic cover off the sofa and yelled "it does smell"! I replied it smells when it is uncover over time and it smells like formaldehyde or glue. It's a defective product. [redacted] said I would have to deal with the furniture manufacture myself, if I wanted to return the product; he would not take the sofa back. I said I bought it from Mattress Outlet, that's where the credit card payment was applied. I said I purchased it from Mattress Outlet not the furniture manufacturer. Gary said he (Mattress Outlet) would not take the sofa back, stormed out of my home and yelled 'see you in court'![redacted] (owner of Mattress Outlet) was derogatory, insulting and combative. He yelled as he was leaving - "this is a $400 item!" He also yelled as he was leaving - "Ma'am, you have 'smell issues' or maybe a 'mental issue'". He sold me a defective product and he thinks its okay to be threatening and insult me.This sofa smells like formaldehyde and particle board glue, it's a defective product that Mattress Outlet sold to me on January 26, 2014. I have spoken with sales represent and the owner 4 times about this defective product, but the owner of Mattress Outlet said it is my problem and refuses to take the defective product back. He even said to me 'see you in court', implying the court would have to make him take it back. Not only is this sofa defective the owner of Mattress Outlet was angry, combative, derogatory and insulting. This is a defective product - sofa. I want a full refund of $474.81 and Mattress Outlet to come and pick-up the sofa. I do not want the owner [redacted] in my home. Desired SettlementA full refund of $474.81. Mattress Outlet to come and pick-up the defective sofa. I do not want the owner [redacted] in my home. Business Response we delivered a loveseat to an apartment complex that less than three months ago sustained over one million dollars of smoke and water damage. she lives in the effected area and it is no surprise that she smells many odors including, smoke, burnt lumber, burnt pastics, burnt tiles, bedding, sofas, unknown personal items from many of the residents and the list goes on. the reason I write this is because we of course contacted the sofa maker to verify ( as written as her main concern) no formaldehyde is used in any of that loveseat. they told me they wholesale millions and millions of dollars worldwide and never had that complaint and they did verify they do NOT use formaldehyde period.as a retailer, we understand not everyone will be plaesed with what they have selected and we went back to her apartment and gave a full refund less a small fee to do all the services again to the third floor. as a smaall business, we try real hard to keep customers happy and we believe [redacted] is more than satisfied with the results. thank youConsumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)The defective sofa had NOTHING to do with the building I live in. The sofa smelled of chemicals. I had to contact the Better Business Burea,[redacted] and wait six (6) weeks before Mattress Outlet took the sofa back. I would not call that 'trying real hard to keep a customer happy'!Mattress Outlet finally took the sofa back after 6 weeks of effort on my part.
