My Name is [redacted] DBA McBroom & Sons Construction, License #[redacted]; I've been in business since April 2002. I'm very proud to say I've had no violations on my record. Most of my past customers have been extremely happy with me and my work. In a small, rural community, that says a...

lot. The job I was contracted to complete, with Mr. & Mrs. [redacted] at [redacted], was no longer than three months past the date the permit was issued. Permit was issued 7/5/2017, and completion date was set for 10/5/2017. The job consisted of building two guest bedrooms and one guest bathroom, as well as changing the existing bathroom into a powder room (1/2 bath) and into a hallway connecting the existing home to the addition. The job would've been completed on time, but there were several days of unforeseen inclement weather. This meant that it would have been at least two more weeks of work, but I received a phone call from the customer stating I was fired on 10/5/2017. Until the time of termination, all of the necessary inspections were passed. Two of the conducted inspections were failed due to corrections that needed to be made, but they were inspected again and passed. But once again, all inspections from the building department were given their approval. According to the customer, the drywall which I installed was not up to their liking, but it passed inspection. I told the customer that the gaps in between the drywall seams can and will be mudded, which is typical practice, and I assured them that their drywall would not get cracks. However, they then told me I was terminated despite the inspection of the drywall being passed. Sometime in the weekend of September 30th and October 1st., two can lights that were in set in place were moved by the customer. The customer expressed that they were unhappy about the placement of the lights, but I told them on Friday, Sept. 29th, that I had the electrician coming the following Monday, Oct. 2nd, to move them where the customer wanted them. The electrician was also set to put them on a three-way switch, which the owner requested, at no added expense to the customer. Their moving of the can lights, without my knowledge and permission, made our contract null and void. When the lights were moved, new electrical wires (Romex) were nicked in the ceiling. There were unforeseen rain showers in our town, but the addition was covered with plastic and tarps. Some rain got into the new addition, but never went into the existing home because the roof of the existing home was not disturbed. The existing insulation in the ceiling and walls had no signs of moisture. There was never enough moisture from any of the rain storms to create any damage in the addition or the existing home. I begged the customer to let me finish the job and that they wouldn't have to get me any more draws of contract until the job was complete, but they were unwilling to do this. There was $10,165.00 left to be paid on the contract. The remaining work on the contract was setting finish mudding, texturing, painting, and hanging doors (which had already been purchased and delivered to the location). The remaining money on the contract would have finished the job, and I was willing to do this even though the contract was void due to the moving of the can lights. I believe I was unjustly terminated and I feel really bad for this fact. Not only for my customer, but my untarnished reputation as well. Once the customer terminated of my services, according to the contract, work was to cease and desist until a time at which an agreement was reached between the customer and myself. According to the contract, an arbitration was to settle disputes, to which they signed and agreed. No other work on the job was to proceed until this time, but they hired someone to continue work, without coming to an agreement to make the rest of the contract and any warranty we had void. I tried to see what would make them happy and I wished to proceed to complete the job, but they didn't want me doing any more work on their property. At this point, I gave them the permit, the purchased closet doors and pocket doors, and all paperwork I had for the job. I wasn't required to do all of this, but I did. I am sorry that all of this happened, but I feel like I have done nothing wrong and was unjustly fired.
