McCormick & Company Reviews (%countItem)

Old Bay allergy
I've eaten Old Bay seasoning all my life but within the last four years, something in the recipe or possibly the supplier has changed. I had an old can of Old Bay that had caused no problems. The moment that we bought a new can and started using it, suddenly the seasoning was bringing me out in hives every time I tried it. I don't know what the difference is, but the results were immediate and obvious. The company says that nothing in the ingredients has changed, but I beg to differ.

Insects found inside of *** noodle soup bowl
Product: *** Soup Bowl
SKU: ***
I purchased a number of the items listed above from *** throughout the past two years. On October 17th, 2018. I started consuming one for lunch while sitting at my desk at work. After a short period of time, I looked down to see many small red oval shaped pieces floating in the soup and stuck to rim of the bowl. After close up inspection, I realized that they were insects. I immediately felt ill and began to violently vomit into my trash can. The vomiting episode caused blood vessels to break all over my face, strain to my abdomen/chest, and put me in a very embarrassing situation at work.
I immediately called the customer support number on the product. I do not feel they took my claim seriously, as the email response made placed the blame on me for not storing the product properly. The product has many layers of packaging and there are no signs of external contamination or infestation. Similarly, the area where stored is clean and there are no signs of bugs.
To prepare the product for consumption, you must remove a cardboard label, plastic wrapper and remove a seal on the bowl. Once opened, there are noodles, and 3 sealed packets containing; seasoning, dried mushrooms and oil. The seasoning and dried mushrooms are sealed in foil lined packets.
There were no signs of the bugs in the noodles, so I suspect the bugs were contaminants included in the seasoning packet.
Immediately after getting off the phone with McCormick customer service I decided to take pictures of everything, seal and store unconsumed portion of soup. I also segregated a few of the bugs and used a microscope to take pictures to send to McCormick. What I found are clearly insects, approximately 2mm in length. I am not an Entomologist, so I do not know what they are or if they pose a health risk.

I have other, unopened, packages of the same product that were purchased at the same time and the infested one that appear to have the same lot code. I have consumed this product many times and faintly remember seeing something similar, in the recent past, but thought it was a piece of spice. There is a high probability that the unopened product may contain the same issue.

Desired Outcome

Contact and discussion with McCormick QA and Health and Safety personnel. I want the type and origin of insect identified and confirmation that consumption of the insect does not pose a health risk.

McCormick & Company Response • Nov 05, 2018

We have been working with Mr. and have assured him several times we are taking his experience very seriously. He was quite upset, understandably, when he called us but was able to provide packaging information and product photos which we forwarded to our Quality Assurance Team. They are investigating.

We have not had any prior history of similar complaints for this product UPC and "Best By" date.

I bought a McCormick product and cannot get them to respond to me addressing the issue.
I bought McCormick's chili spice mix. They keep responding with nonsense.

I noticed is has what in the spice packet. That raises concerns about the product possibly containing glyphosate if non-organic wheat is used. If non-organic wheat was used, please send a $1.00 refund.

Dear ***:

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We appreciate your interest in our Hot Chili Seasoning and welcome the opportunity to be of assistance to you.

McCormick(r) will always declare gluten ingredients on our label in the ingredients statement.

Gluten is listed as wheat, barley, "rye", "oats", "spelt", "triticale", "kamut" or any protein containing part thereof and hybridized strains of these grains in our ingredient statements. This labeling policy adheres to the Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act (FALCPA).

Gluten will never be hidden under the notations of spices or natural flavors. If no ingredient statement appears on the product label, then the product is as it appears in the product name (e.g. black pepper). All our retail Extracts and Food Colors are formulated without gluten.

Our McCormick facilities have allergen, sanitation, and hygiene programs in place. Our employees follow good manufacturing practices and are trained in the importance of correct labeling and the necessity of performing thorough equipment clean-up and change over procedures to minimize cross-contact of ingredients.

Because we are constantly improving our products, we do not offer a list of our products that do not currently contain glutens. We encourage you to read the ingredient statement on your package at the time of purchase to ensure accurate, up to date information. If any product has a Gluten Free claim, the product and the manufacturing line has been validated Gluten Free.

Sincerely,

John

Who cares about gluten? I love gluten. I want extra gluten in my food. Why are you so concerned about gluten?

I never said I enjoyed it. Since you refuse to answer my questions, send me a $1.00 refund. This will be my last e-mail. If you respond with nonsense again, I won't reply and will file a Revdex.com dispute instead. Thanks.

McCormick & Company Response • Feb 13, 2018

I was made aware of this concern before receiving this and had personally responded to the consumer as his initial question was misunderstood by our agent. We also sent him some coupons to put towards our products.

Customer Response • Feb 14, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
First, how could my e-mails be misunderstood repeatedly? They were pretty clear. Second, in the first e-mail McCormick said the spice pack I bought was non-GMO. Now, they're saying, "The product you referenced in your original email is our Hot Chili Seasoning Mix and that product is not GMO free." McCormick said they have an organic seasoning pack, but it's not available at ***. I still need a refund on the packet.

McCormick & Company Response • Feb 15, 2018

I have responded to the consumer with the following:

I just received a note from the Revdex.com indicating that you were unhappy with my response. Again, I apologize and want to assure you this has been addressed with the original agent.

I'm sorry that the Organic Chili Seasoning Mix isn't available at *** and that the other stores we suggested nearby are not satisfactory options. Often a grocery chain will alter its mix of products from store to store to meet seasonal and customer needs. Most stores are anxious to please their customers, so you may want to contact your store's manager to request this product.

At your request, we are sending you a check for $2 to replace the original seasoning mix you purchased. I hope the coupons we sent will still come in useful. They can be used towards any McCormick herb, spice or packet mix.

We appreciate your business and hope you will reach out to us again if you have any further questions.

Customer Response • Feb 16, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she ACCEPTED the response from the business.)
Even though McCormick is now natorious for ignoring customers and will only respond if a Revdex.com complaint is filed, I accept the resolution.
