McQuillen Auto Reviews (2)

Review: On July 30, 2015 we bought a 2014 Fiat from McQuillen Chevrolet-Buick-GMC in Girard. We purchased the Fiat because we needed a car that could be flat towed behind our newly purchased motor home. During the course of the sale, we told the salesman, Steve, why we were purchasing this car. He said there would be no problem flat towing this car. The next day we took the Fiat to Boyer’s camping to have a tow bar put on it. Boyer’s said we could not flat tow this Fiat because it was an automatic. We called McQuillen’s immediately and talked to Ron the manager. He said he would talk to Mr. McQuillen and call us back. He did call us back to tell us he could not contact Mr. McQuillen but would continue to try. On August 1st we took the Fiat back to McQuillen’s. Here’s where the problem starts.

When Steve, the original salesman, saw us he became belligerent and said we never told him we wanted to flat tow the car. We said we just wanted our money back, he said they wouldn’t do that. We said we would cancel the check. He said if we did that Mr. McQuillen would take us to the District Justice. At that point Ron, the general manager, came over and Steve left.

Ron said maybe he could find something that could replace the Fiat but it might be more money. We explained that we could not spend any more money than we already had. He said we could do an even trade. Ron said Mr. McQuillen told him to do “whatever was necessary” to make this work. Brian, a different salesman, jumped right in to help and came up with the idea that the 2010 HHR they had on the lot might do the trick. He checked the owner’s manual first thing right in front of us to see if it could be flat towed. Ron couldn’t do enough for us – making sure that was the right car and even calling Boyer’s to double check that it could be flat towed. He explained how to tow it and showed us where, how and why to remove fuse number 8 before towing. To say the least, we were impressed and delighted with the way Ron, Brian and Ericka (the title clerk) handled an awkward situation.

Then we got home and checked McQuillen’s web site. We noticed the 2010 HHR was listed for sale at $7,995 (before tax, title, etc. of course) not the $8500 listed on the yellow sheet we have. We paid $8995 for the Fiat. They did not offer to give us the difference. That is a lot of money. No one mentioned that the HHR was for sale for less money than the Fiat. We wrote a letter to McQuillen’s on April 3rd about this situation but never received a reply. We think this was a dishonest transaction.Desired Settlement: Refund the dollar difference between the Fiat and the HHR

09/26/2015Revdex.com[redacted]re: ID# [redacted]Thank you for the letter regarding [redacted], hopefully I can clear up the missunderstanding. To be fair to Mr M[redacted], he did not suggest the Fiat to the [redacted]s, they specifically asked for that vehicle when they first came in. They told Mr M[redacted] that needed to flat tow a vehicle and wanted to buy the Fiat. Mr M[redacted] presumed, as most people would have, that.the [redacted]s did the research and determined themselves that the Fiat can be flat towed. Flat towing is a very specific need and it is not practically possible for a sales person to know that capability for all makes and models of cars on the market. If a customer comes to a dealership and requests a certain vehicle because the want to flat tow it, it is reasonable expect they know what they are looking for. That being the case niether Mr M[redacted] nor this dealership did anything wrong. The [redacted] should have made the phone call to Boyer's prior to shopping for a vehicle. After the [redacted]'s discovered they made a mistake they wanted to return the vehicle. At that time it was explained to them that they own it but we will try to trade them in to something that can be flat towed. The problem was that they did not want to pay anything more, not even the title fees that are paid to the state. The dilemma was in finding a vehicle that can be flat towed and cost them absolutely nothing. With this being a new purchase thier vehicle was appraised at $7500. They actually purchased the Chevy HHR for thier vehicle less the @$225 title fees, so they really only paid @$7250 for the new car. Quite the deal for a low mileage vehicle listed on line at $7995. On another note, the [redacted]'s did not pay $8995 for the Fiat, it was actually $8500.In my opinion McQuillen's went above and beyond reasonable expectations to rectify the [redacted]'s initial mistake and trade them into a vehicle that met thier needs.Sincerely, Daniel McQuillen, pres. Review: In February of this year I took my suzuki grand vitara to McQuillen GMC for a recall on a seat cushion. The repair was to take an hour...3 hours later I was told my car was done. When I got in my car to leave it would not start. After another hour of the mechanics looking at my car they told me the engine had locked up and they did not know why. I was given a loaner car. Two hours later I was told they still didn't know what was wrong. After several weeks of phone calls and 3 different diagnoses I met witH Mr. [redacted] to discuss the multiple diagnoses and see what they were willing to do for me since the car was brought to them in working order. He then gave me yet another reason for the engine locking up at which point I felt I had been lied to throughout the experience and spoken to in a condescending manner by the service manager. We agreed that they would do a repair, not an entirely new engine, for $2000.00 with no guarantees. It was now late March and I finally got my car back. At the end of May my car started making a screaching, rattling noise. My mechanic when attempting to fix it found that the fly wheel had been installed incorrectly and without the cover, had grind marks where it had been ground down so it wouldn't bang against the engine! This had been put together by McQuillen Service department after being taken apart and in a million pieces during the 5 weeks they had my car. I believe that the service department is extremely lacking and knowingly returned my car to me fixed wrong! I want people to know that McQuillen Service Department cannot be trusted, does shoddy work and that the dealership made no effort to offer me any compensation and in fact blamed my husband at one point for causing the engine to lock up in the first place.Desired Settlement: I would like the $124.00 it cost me to find out that McQuillen had put my engine together incorrectly as I am already out $2,000.00 from the initial "repair" that they did which I don't believe I should have paid either since the engine quit on their watch. If I thought I could recover any of the $2,000.00 that would be the ideal but probably not very likely.
