effort that MDS was putting in and they remarked many time how great the project was going. I have several emails every week stating how great everyone is to work with and how the craftsmanship and everyone’s attention to detail is top notch. This positive progress continued for 2 months. Inspections were done for rough in heating, electrical and framing inspections with the City of Woodbury. All of the inspections passed, and are on record with the city. Things were going great until we got to cabinets. Unfortunately, [redacted] refused to pay the architect in full even after she signed off on the design, and threatened to sue the architect for not designing the space correctly. MDS remodeling bid off the approved plan, and built a complete set of cabinets, which we then installed. After the cabinets where installed I received several emails about how they looked so good. The last set of cabinets was being installed per the drawings when things took a turn for the worst. [redacted] said she didn’t like the cabinets and they weren’t up to her standards of quality after doing several hours research on top quality cabinets. I asked a lot of questions and spent hours going over design and colors with the cabinets and not once did she mention any particular way she wanted them built. I offered to remove $13,000 worth of cabinets at my expense since she didn’t like them, and she said she wanted me to remove them. We did so. I did not charge her for the cabinets. From this point on everything we touched was not good enough. I removed many other items from the final invoice because they didn’t like them or didn’t think they were good enough quality. These items include a full fireplace hearth, shelves, etc all at no charge to Vera, although I paid my subcontractors and vendors for these items. [redacted] and [redacted] also told me they didn’t like the audio subcontractor that roughed in the wires and would prefer not to have him back. They didn’t allow him to finish the job.  They stated at that time-every other subcontractor was awesome.
[redacted] then purchased a non returnable vanity on clearance. When I said we would have to move a heat duct into the wall to accommodate the vanity, and it will add extra cost to do this she said she didn’t want to use the vanity, and that I should have anticipated that issue. I was now told I was now responsible for paying for the vanity because it didn’t work. I agreed to reimburse her for the cost of the vanity just to keep the project going smoothly.
[redacted] ordered windows prior to having a structural engineer come out to the house to save money and one of the windows would not work due to sizing. They asked me to pay for this window and although I didn’t feel that was my responsibility, I agreed.
My flooring subcontractor wasn’t allowed back in the house to do any repairs even though he called several times and asked to at least be allowed to take a look. [redacted] indicated there were 2 "bad boards" and he would have been happy to replace them. I also offered to pay for another company to do the repairs, which [redacted] and [redacted] chose to do. I kept my word, and took this amount off my final invoice. I removed all items from the final invoice that was provided to [redacted] and Phil. These were items we agreed upon during our final meeting.
Vera, [redacted] and myself did a walkthrough and determined the items that were left as part of my contract.  I completed all of these items and I did a walk through with [redacted] after they where complete. None of the items that [redacted] mentions in her complaints were brought up to me at this final meeting, nor did I agree to provide a solution or cost reimbursement for the issues she raises. The issues she raises to my knowledge were not done, and are not the responsibility of MDS Remodeling, or it’s subcontractors.
Over the last 2 months MDS has been slandered, verbally abused and threatened after we and ALL of my subcontractors on the project did everything we could possibly do and lost large amounts of money. [redacted] didn’t like the workmanship of any subcontractors at the end of the project and that is 6 independently owned and operated Minnesota businesses that have done work for me for many years and never had a complaint like this. We take pride in our work and if something is not liked we resolve it to make the client happy. This is more about not wanting to pay and trying to get money back than anything. [redacted] has tried to go through several channels to hurt my business, including creating strange videos and sending them to my vendors. My vendor finally had to ask her to please stop sending the emails as he found them harassing. We’ve tried very hard to go above and beyond with Vera, with no success. At this point we can only stick to the high road.
Thanks for your help with this, I appreciate it.
