I recently had an issue with a clogged kitchen sink drain. I called another rooter and for 2 hours this rooter was snaking what he thought was the correct pipe. Finally, his snake broke and he gave up leaving me no better off than when he came. I then called Benny M[redacted] of Medina Sewer and Drain. After a few questions, a bit of common sense, and a little tapping on various pipes to make sure that he was snaking the right one, within 5 minutes the problem was solved. I would not hesitate to call Mr. Benny M[redacted] again for problems of this nature. LB

Review: [redacted] came to my residence to snake a slow bathtub. While snaking he broke the trap and caused significant damage to the kitchen ceiling. [redacted] then informed me that my pipe across the kitchen had to be replaced because it was corroded beyond clearing. He stated that I would have to tear my entire ceiling down and then replace pipe and possible go into the walls. Then I would have to put a new ceiling up. My bathtub was now completely clogged and [redacted] received his $100 and left. For a Several estimates for such a job exceeded $2,000 dollars. A plumber came to give me an estimate but asked to check the pipe first. When he checked the pipe he discovered that the pipe DID NOT need replacing but in fact had shampoo and hair conditioner caked in it. He snaked the pipe out with a iron rod and it took him 5 minutes. The pipe was completely clear and the clog removed. He also informed me that the pipe was in very good shape and would be good for at least 30 years, [redacted] actually pushed all the debris into the pipe to make the clog worse. Then gave me the number of "guy" who could replace the pipes. I was on the verge of spending over $2000 and tearing up my kitchen based on [redacted]'s recommendations and incompetence.Desired Settlement: Refund of the $100.

Response:

I snaked Mr. [redacted]’s bathtub drain at his request but in the process the pipe broke. I opened up a section of ceiling in the kitchen to examine the pipe and trap and found that someone else had performed previous work on the pipe and had installed the wrong type of trap – one that was suitable for a kitchen or bathroom sink but not for a bathtub. I also found the pipe to be corroded. The house is about 50 years old, so it would not be unusual to find this condition, but it signaled a need to consider replacing the pipe. I attempted to snake the pipe from the opposite direction from the kitchen, but the clog was too dense and it broke my snake. I had a trap on my truck that was similar to the one that the customer already had, so I replaced the trap. I showed the customer the problem with the pipe and trap and recommended that he contact a plumber to inspect his drain, pipe and trap set-up to confirm what I told him. I am not a licensed plumber, so I suggested a plumber whose work I’m familiar with, but the customer was certainly free to contact anyone he wished. Apparently, the person he called next was able to break through the clog with an iron rod. The customer’s complaint does not indicate whether this person performed any other work.

I performed the work the customer asked for and made recommendations for further inspection and repair based on my experience; therefore, I do not feel the customer’s request for a refund is justified.
