Mel Harris Company, Inc.

I had Mel Harris Roofing Company come out and give me an estimate on a new metal roof. They were very prompt in returning my call and scheduling an appointment to come out. However that's where the good part of this story ends. The sales rep was an older gentlemen. I think his name was Rob or Roger. He didn't give me his card. He was nice but he was very awkward. He gave us the whole salesman pitch about how great the Mel Harris company was and all about the warranty and products. He kept telling us how honest he was and so on. He showed us a binder full of before photos of metal roofs he claimed were jobs he had sold for Mel Harris but there was only 1 job with an after photo. And one job he claimed was a "strange" house in Conway but to me it looked like this old gas station on 412 between Springdale and Siloam Springs. Anyway after his sales pitch he went out and measured around the house, then he sat in car for a while and talked on the phone. He came back in the house and went through his sales pitch again. He told us about the great special they had going on in July because this was the Anniversary for Mel Harris's 50th year in business and that their vendors were giving them a discount that they were passing onto the customers. He also said this deal was only for customers who signed a deal for a new roof on the first visit to the house. For me that smells fishy, if the special deal is only good right then and there that sounds like a scam. The special deal was 20% off and sales tax paid. The most shocking part of this was the quote price. The job required removing the old metal, repairing water damage, and putting on the new metal. The house is a single level home around 2900-3000 square feet. And the quote price was $41,000!!! Minus the 20% it was $32,000 and some change!! To me that is just outrageous. The sales rep said we we're getting a great deal because of the great warranty and that we should expect to pay more for a license, bonded, and insured company. He asked me how much I expected to pay and I said somewhere around $12,000. Which I didn't think was cheap either but also not unreasonable. And he said if I had known that I wouldn't have needed to come out to tell me that his products weren't that cheap and that he couldn't even buy material for that price. So overall not impressed and I felt like I was getting scammed.
