Melvin Smith Paving Reviews (9)

To whom it may concernIn regards to the complaint that I filed on June 13th, I'd like to ascertain that the business in question, Melvin Smith Paving, did rectify our problem by repaving our driveway.  Thank you![redacted]

Review: We were promised that the new asphalt applied to our drive would be three inches thick. Two months after its application, the driveway began to erode. There are several bare areas, holes and cracks. It is apparent that only a think layer of asphalt was applied. We were promised by the company that they would re-do job. After almost tow year of innumerable calls, texts, and missed appointments, they have not rectified the problem.

Review: Mr. [redacted] came to the door last February and introduced himself as a fourth- generation paving contractor duly licensed in PA, bonded and insured. Seeing my hesitation he stressed to me hat he will stand behind his service and that he had done a lot of works in my area in Georgia. If I had any problems, all I had to do was call him. He said he works six months of the year in PA and six in GA. In the circular advertising his services he showed also a local number. He started the job of paving our driveway on 2/25/2014, and on 2/28/2014 he recommended a sealer coating to make the paving last at least seven years. We paid him a total of $4,810. He granted a ten percent discount after meeting my fully disabled husband. After everything was dry, I walked on it, and noticed that there was a lot of lose gravel everywhere. A few weeks later the faulty mix started crumbling and now we have spots everywhere showing the original asphalt underneath. This after only three months from the job. I tried repeatedly to get in touch with him but to no avail. The two PA numbers on the receipt are now disconnected, according to Verizon wireless. The local number records messages, but we did not receive any calls back from him. On the receipt he shows PA license #008112. After I started investigating the background of the company, I discovered that Melvin Smith Paving had already seven complaints filed against him at the Revdex.com, none of which was resolved. It is very disheartening that contractors like him have total disregard of other people's lives and keep on offering defective services through deception and false advertising in several locations of the country.Desired Settlement: My husband and I would like to be fully reimbursed of the money we spent for this faulty paving job, and the removal of the defective asphalt and cleaning of the surface to allow us the hiring of a company to do the paving job with professional knowledge and integrity.

Review: I had Smith Paving pave my driveway last summer for a cost of $3,300.00. The driveway is cracked in to places and crumbling in many other places. [redacted] also promised me a free sealer because I got five of my neighbors to use his company.Desired Settlement: I would like to either have the driveway stripped down to the original layer then repaved correctly, or a partial refund of $2,000.00.

Review: On April 15th, 2013 Smith Paving sealed my asphalt driveway. About a week after the job was completed, INO ticed that several spots in the sealant had come loose.I called to have someone come back and take care of the problem. After waiting with no return call, I called again and was told that someone had been out to my home (I was not here at the time) and found the problem had escalated and told me that the driveway would probably need to be resealed (no charge). Well, needless to say, that never happened. I have made at least 5 or 6 calls requesting a callback. I did receive one callback and was told that someone was going to be at my house that Saturday, that day came and went with no one showing up and no phone call to explain why. Now, my phone calls go unanswered and ignored completely, I have yet to receive a callback. I am totally frustrated and very disappointed with this situation. Initally, [redacted] and his son came to my home in a reasonable length of time after I called about having them give me an estimate to do the job. They quoted a very reasonable price and seemed very professional and very nice to work with. Now that the work has been completed and paid for, no one wants to take responsibility to repair the holes in the sealant, which, become worse by the day.Desired Settlement: Please have the courtesy to return my phone calls and schedule someone to come back and repair the holes or replace the sealant on the entire driveway.

Review: Nov. 30, 2013 Smith paving PA 008112 phone ([redacted]), came out to give us an estimate for repaving our drive way and extending our parking pad. We where happy with them and the price seamed fare. So Dec. 32013 we had them do the work it was a warm day and they said most people do not know when it is still above 50 F. it is good for asphalt. They did a nice job and all looked well, they said do not park on it for three days, we waited a week. When we started parking on it we immediately got sink spots from our vehicles. Within in two weeks some spots started to crack and fall apart, in a month we had pot holes where the asphalt totally came off. Then it started to crack. We thought we would get at least 4-5 years before these problems started to happen, not just a couple of months. Now not even six months later the whole drive way is flaking off, if you wash it with a hose it chips off.Over the past six months we have called them a number of times with no response. We thought we would try again when they start to advertise again in the spring and again no response. We even tried to call them with a different name and phone number and this time they did call back and when we told them what we wished done, (we asked them if they could come out and take a look at a new job, we wish to extend out parking pad and we told them the address they again did not call back).During this time we did find that a couple of other people had the same problem and left reviews with them about these problems, so it is not the first time they have done a very unprofessional job, took the money and did not respond to problem calls. We called them again yesterday Sunday May 18, 2014 and left a message about the problems again and asked them to give us a call today Monday the 19, 2014, we thought we would give them one more chance to fix the problems and again they did not call back.We paid them $ 3,600 for the work and the whole job needs to be redone. They received the money but did not do the work for the money received. We appreciate any help you can provide.Any questions please ask. Thank you[redacted] and [redacted]Desired Settlement: Redo all work previously provide or a full refund.

Review: On June 25, 2013 we had our driveway asphalted and sealed by Smith Paving. We got the name of the asphalt company: Smith Paving, aka J. Smith Asphalt Paving, and aka Smith Asphalt Paving from an ad in the Pennysaver. Believing in the integrity and honesty of the Pennysaver, we called Smith Paving. Mr. [redacted] came to our home surveyed the situation and gave us an estimate of $5,545.00 to which we agreed. The project consisted of digging and removing broken loose asphalt, applying scratch leveling coat of asphalt, applying liquid glue tack coat, and installing new 21/2 finish asphalt laver rolled to smooth finish. Mr. [redacted], father of [redacted] and Justin were both present on June 25, 2013. After completion of the job which took the best part of the day, we gave Mr. [redacted] a check in the amount of $5,545.00. Several weeks later, we noticed the asphalt at the top of the driveway was starting to deteriorate. The asphalt was starting to crumble exposing the old asphalt base, which was the reason for the need of new asphalt. We called the number on the paving information leaving several messages as to our complaint. We finally talked to [redacted] who said that he would get back to us and would certainly correct the problem. Again no reply. We have placed several phone calls using the various phone numbers which have appeared in the Pennysaver Ad. Again no response. Our last call was placed on November 22, 2013 to the voicemail of Mr. [redacted]. I left a detailed message of our complaint and requested an immediate solution to our problem knowing that repairs on asphalt is not successful in cold weather. We may have to pursue legal remedies to seek redress if [redacted] does not respond to our comply with our request. We have also notified the Pennysaver as to the credibility of a client such as Smith Paving and perhaps reconsider their business association.Desired Settlement: We could like Smith Paving to return to our home and resolve the issue of the deterioration of asphalt at the top of our driveway.

Review: We recently had an asphalt driveway installed on 8/21/15. We also had a drain installed in front of our garage. It looked like everything was done properly however we already have weeds growing up through the driveway in multiple areas. The driveway is not of appropriate thickness. The drain installation was also incomplete. It only diverted water away several feet to the middle of our garage. My husband had to continue digging a trench and buy more pipe to avoid damage to the garage foundation.Desired Settlement: I want the driveway redone at an appropriate thickness or a refund so I can hire someone else to do it.

Review: I contracted with Smith Asphalt Paving (also known as Melvin Smith Paving or Pittsburgh Paving Pros) to replace my driveway and replace a retaining wall. They were to remove the old driveway and install a new one that included a binder and wear surface totaling 4 inches. The driveway was soft to walk on for over a week after it was installed, and continued to settle. The surface was not evenly rolled and collected water when it rained. The contractor would not return my calls about this. I had to contract with another company to make repairs. In making the repairs it was determined they only used 1 to 1 1/2 inches of top coat on top of a poorly compacted base. No binder was used. The entire driveway had to be redone. The retaining wall was also poorly constructed and had to be redone. Some sections were sitting on the ground with no base, and pieces of rock were used to level it.Desired Settlement: I would like a full refund of the $7,600 I paid since it all the work had to be redone.
