I was told by a representative at the hospital who called before my surgery, to to take my sleep apea appliance with me to help me sleep better at night. I took a couple of items in a bag along with my blue travel pillow. I'm guessing my pillow got thrown into their laundry when they changed my sheets and my mouth piece which I remember being on the table was thrown out when they picked up the meal tray. I really don't know what happened because I was medicated. I called lost and found several times after I left the hospital and also went to the hospital as instructed to still be given the runaround. I found someone to help me and she called the person in charge whom I was leaving message for finally called me and told me that they were not responsible for the loss of my items. They should be responsible. Now they have a new procedure for lost and found items, it is to discard them completely, they will no longer hold items for 90 days. How is this in keeping with their "Human Kindness" motto.
My dentist was very understanding about losing my mouthpiece at the hospital and he said that it happens all the time. He gave me a reduced price for replacing my mouthpiece and would like a refund from the hospital. I didn't need help falling asleep and their carelessness should not be my loss. I did pick up the inventory list but I guess I didn't list it and no one bothered to check or ask me about items added in my bag or they would have seen it because it was in a lavender case that the dentist gave me.

We thank you for brining your concerns to our attention. The following is a response to the recent information regarding an opportunity for us to improve our service. We feel it is important for you to be aware that these concerns have been reviewed by the Patient Safety Specialist and investigated to the best of our ability. As of today, the following has occurred or been uncovered:
· Valuables/belongings sheet was reviewed and signed by patient including an acknowledgement that “The safety and security of valuables, personal devices and electronic items I choose to keep at the bedside has been discussed with me. I understand that I am responsible for these items as documented above.”
· Miscellaneous items and any additional valuables were documented as taken home by the patient’s spouse on the Valuable/belongings sheet.
· There’s no record of a mouth piece having been brought into the facility.
· Review of the facility lost belongings inventory log was completed; items reported lost by patient were not found.
· Reviewed Conditions of Admissions signed by patient indicating knowledge that the hospital is not responsible for loss of items not placed in the hospital safe.

I am rejecting this response because:
I was medicated when they asked me to sign and I did not realize that my mouthpiece was missing. If the hospital is telling you to bring in the item before surgery, they SHOULD be responsible or at least mention that if its lost that they are not responsible. I would not have taken the mouthpiece but I was told too.

Thank you for providing Bakersfield Memorial Hospital with Mr. concern. I am happy to report that on October 17, 2019, Mr. was provided with his complete billing records including procedures and charges between 2001 and 2016. These were sent to him via secure email and mailed hard copy.
