Review: 5/**/13 Our son [redacted] was taken to the emergency room for a sprain ankle. Doctor [redacted] MD examined our son,he determined it was a sprain and gave him a leg splint and crutches and was discharged. We received in the mail two bills, one from the emergency room with doctor [redacted] name on it for $718 dollars which we agreed to pay.We then received a 2nd bill from the hospital for $995 dollars for the same visit, when asked about it the hospital said that bill was also from doctor [redacted] and for the hospital stay.I replied what hospital stay ? he was checked in on 11pm and was checked out at 2am.Desired Settlement: I will agree to pay the $718 dollars. I do not think I should have to pay another $995 dollars. The total bill would then be $ 1,713 dollars for a sprain and 10 minutes of the doctors time.

Response:
Mercy Medical Center is a hospital licensed by the State of New York. Long Island Emergency Medical Care, P.C. is the contracted physician group that staffs the Emergency Department at Mercy Medical Center with physicians and mid-level providers.
As for the patient’s complaint, below please find the explanation of the two bills that the parents received:
The physician bill from [redacted] (Long Island Emergency Medical Care) is for the professional services only. This is only for the Medical Doctors services.
The bill from Mercy Medical Center is the facility side. The facility bill covers the actual facility charges such as: the nurses, testing (X-Rays in this case), and supplies (crutches & medications).
The two bills in no way overlap. The physician does not bill for facility “goods” and the hospital does not bill for physician services. I apologize for the wrong information the parent received.
The physician and hospital bills were filed with Cigna, the insurance, and after customary adjustments and write-offs the parents received the bill. I will have both Mercy and LIEMC file an appeal with the insurance company. The policy holder should also file an appeal with Cigna as to why they did not pay.

I hope the information above clears up any concerns regarding the bills. My information is below if the parents would like to contact me.
