Merriam-Webster, Inc. Reviews (1)

I currently owne an 11th edition of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary- wit the CD-ROM. First, the CD-ROM is defective, second the language research service for owners of this dictionary did not answer my numerious letters that included S.A.S.E. for the following that was not included I this defective dictionary, "Who was Tokeyo Rose? What was her real name? Where was she arrested? Who was Axis Salley? Who was Mirabeau Lamar? What was the year he was President of Texas? What is a Chincoteague Pony? Where is Assateague Island? Why is not Palestine, Texas in my dictionary? in the geography section? None of these facts were in my dictionary but they are supposed to be. I also asked: Did the republic of Texas during the confederacy sell arms to both the north and the south during the civil war? And that west Texas chose not to support the confederacy when the east chose to support them? The language research service chose not to respond to any of my questions. To this date no one at Merriam-Webster has responded or answered. The following statements made by the company are in the back of my dictionary amount to false advertising."Merriam-Webster's Language Research Service offers owners of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary the opportunity to take advantage of the editorial resources of America's foremost dictionary publisher- at no cost.If you have questions about a particular word, such as who first used it or why it has not been entered in the dictionary, an inquiry to the Language Research Service will bring an accurate and concise reply from a Merriam-Webster editor- a member of the largest permanent staff of lexicongraphers. Take advantage of this unique offfer today. Mail your questions too:Language Research ServiceMy numbers for this dictionary are as followsUPC-X-XXXXX-XXXXX-XUSBN-X-XXXXX-XXX-XEAN-X-XXXXXX-XXXXXXThis all seems to be a sham.Desired SettlementEither replace the phony dictionary with an unabridged one and answer all my questions above as the original promise claimed they would on both. Business Response We did receive non Dictionary related questions from the complainant via USPS and all questions received were answered by reply mail. There were additional questions mentioned in this complaint that were never received by us, and those were also answered prior to answering this complaint. We feel that there is no basis for an on-going complaint as all of the customers questions have been answered. He is asking for us to replace his Collegiate Dictionary with the Unabridged Dictionary. This is not a plausible resolution as these are two totally different books. The price of the Collegiate is approximately $23.95 (depending on the actual book)and the price of the Unabridged is $129. In addition, the majority of his complaint was in regards to getting answers to questions that were not relevant to the Collegiate Dictionary. He claims the dictionary is defective. It is not. Much of what he is asking is more related to what would be found in an encyclopaedia, not a dictionary.
