In 2011 a new roof was put on the house my husband and I were buying. The roof was put on when the previous owners were in the house. The guarantee clearly states that problems associated with labor are guaranteed for 5 years. Venting was not cut into the peak of the rook on 4 sections closest to the driveway resulting in water/ice damming in the winters and spring and then mold grew. These roofers looked at the roof on several occasions, made some adjustments, and did not fix the problem. We had another contractor look at the roof this past summer, found the problem and fixed it. All of this information has been shared with the roofer, MHI Services. I want MHI Services to reimburse me for the cost to fix the roof, [redacted]Product_Or_Service: Home Roofcount_Number: [redacted]Desired SettlementReimburse [redacted] that it cost me to fix the roof MHI installed and could not fix themselves.Business Response sorry this took so long I had to dig out a old computer that had the older contracts on it to find the contract for this property to be sure I was correct in the fact that venting of this home was not in the contract I was pretty sure it was not and that the reason for the roof being removed and replaced was the original builder didnt install any underlayment under the shingles. below is a copy of the original estimate/contract between mhi and the chabots. Francis Chabot 3-25-2011 600 Federal St. Montague,Ma. Remove and replace existing roof with 30 year architect shingles. The bottom of the roof will have ice and water shield on it.The rest of the roof will be covered with roof guard. All roof debris will be hauled away. Cost for materials and labor [redacted] We give a 5 year warranty on the labor. As you can see venting of the roof was not part of our contract and the amount of the ridge that was cut open was done so by the original builder and not by us we simply removed the old roof and the old cobra vent replaced the roof with ice and water shield and a synthetic underlayment and put a different style shingle over vent on over the ridge but the actual cutting of the ridge was not done by or contracted by us to do. Though I do recall adressing the concern at the time of the job that I felt there was not enough venting and suggesting a couple square roof vents being installed mr [redacted] did not like how that style vent looked though and didnt want them installed. I have attached the pictures that the berlins sent to me so you can better understand what is being discussed and though I do not disagree that more venting was required we did not contract to do any venting therefor we feel it is not a labor related issue and should not be covered under the 5 year warrenty on labor. Consumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)Prior to filing a Revdex.com complaint, I spoke with MHI about this issue. I was assured that they would work with us. When there was no action on their part after our phone discussion, I filed the Revdex.com complaint. MHI is the original roofer for the house. When they had to do revisions in 2011, it was due to their own mistakes. I will not be satisfied with this issue until MHI pays us $774.64 for the cost to us to fix the problem that MHI was responsible for and then unable to diagnose. Final Business Response I have read miss [redacted] reply and her statement ( MHI is the original roofer for the house. When they had to do revisions in 2011, it was due to their own mistakes) is incorrect the original roofer and the person who cut the ridge was the original builder of the house and that was not MHI we were contracted to remove the original roof that had no underlayment on it and replace it with a roof that had underlayment not to vent the house or to cut the ridge on the house.I had told miss [redacted] we would work with them but I had to get a copy of the original contract to see if we had or had not contracted to vent the house though I was sure we had not I wanted to be sure. Our (mhi,s) original plan was if we contracted to vent the house was to pay the [redacted] what it cost them to have the ridge cut bigger and if not was to offer them half the money they had spent. Sense that conversation miss [redacted] is speaking of she has sent me a email threating to take me to small claims court and has turned us into the Revdex.com at this point I feel we have no legal obligation to the [redacted] Final Consumer Response (The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)Be sure to understand what the issue is really about. The pictures display that the issue is with shingle placement OVER the existing venting of the roofline, sealing it and rendering it non-functional. There was no need to alter the structure itself. That placement of the shingles over that existing venting on the roofline trapped humid air in the roof which would condense and then freeze. Since the shingles have been properly placed allowing air passage from that venting, we have had no condensation buildup or subsequent ice and water damage.
