To Whom It May Concern:

On Thursday, July 17th, I left my shirt at Michigan Park Dry Cleaners at [redacted] in Washington, DC. The desk clerk was abrasively clear that I would have to pay “double” in order for them to take extra care when cleaning my shirt. My shirt is a white cotton oxford shirt, with golden palettes. I obliged.

On Monday, July 21st, I went back to collect my shirt and paid the same front desk clerk. I checked the shirt just before I left, and it was obviously damaged. Over half of the golden palettes had been stripped of their color. When I spoke to the desk clerk about the issue, she said that I would have to speak to the manager, who had left for the day. Though, I had already paid for the service, I left the shirt. There were no apologies.

On Tuesday July 22nd, I went back to the store-front to speak to “Susie” the proprietor of the shop between 10am and 11am as I was told to do. She had not arrived and was informed only then, that she was not coming into the shop because of a Dr.’s appointment. I instructed the desk clerk to have Susie call me to set up a time to meet as my shirt was visibly ruined, and I had already made 2 attempts to resolve the issue. Susie called me and left a message that she would be in the shop on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, July 23rd, Susie informed me in person that the she could not be responsible for the damage to the shirt as it was most likely already damaged before I left it at the shop. This was not true. Then she said that the shirt must have been pre-disposed to the damage by being dry cleaned too many times. I have only worn the shirt twice. This was only the second cleaning. The first was months before, and there was no damage done. I insisted that she give me a refund, and at least offer to pay for some of the value of the shirt. She declined. I told her that I would need to call the police to make an official record of this dispute in case I had to pursue it further. Susie responded “..and you think I am going to refund your money now, if you are calling the police? Call the police then.” Definitely, there were no apologies.

An officer Jones arrived on the scene at approximately 2:15pm. She instructed me that I had to take Michigan Park Cleaners to small claims court in order to resolve my dispute. She also said that she was unable to create a “report” as it was a civil dispute, and it would have to be handled in the court room.

I left defeated. The shirt was a $125.00 shirt. I live in New York City full time and travel a lot for work. I don’t have the spare time to pursue this. But then, I thought of how many other customers were treated in this manner. I did a search on [redacted], and there were several complaints. I did an inquiry to the Revdex.com, and there are 3 outstanding unresolved complaints. This business has a history of abusing its customers, and hiding behind their claim that they can’t be responsible for any damage that garments may incur. I submit that if you charge an extra (or double) handling fee, you are agreeing to take care of my shirt properly. This was not the case. Essentially, I paid double the cleaning fee for them to ruin my shirt, which no apology or even offer of remedy.

In addition to being reimbursed for my shirt and severe inconvenience, I’d like set a precedent for this business to treat their customers fairly and with respect.

Thank you,Desired Settlement: I believe a refund and replacement is in order.

Review: On July 24, 2013, I took a yellow dress with ornamental buttons to Michigan Park Cleaners for cleaning. On July 25, 2013, the dress was returned two-toned (bodice of dress was a pale yellow and bottom a darker yellow). Dress was all the same color yellow when presented for cleaning. When my daughter (who picked up the dress) brought it in the door, I immediately noticed the color variation and telephoned the establishment and was told to bring it back in. Upon taking it back, the employee, [redacted], said the owners were out of town until next week and there was nothing that could be done.Desired Settlement: I want to be reimbursed for the cleaning charge ($18.70) and the replacement cost of the dress ($79.00).
